I have been looking for a nicer and quieter mechanical keyboard as an upgrade from my Kogan special.
My keyboard is a bit too noisy for conference calls (I have to mute, else risk the wrath of others)

$99 is the cheapest I have found online - standard rrp is supposedly $149, staticice says $139 is the going rate.

Supposed to be Razer orange switches with o-rings installed to keep things quieter.
Only white backlighting, no RGB, so more office friendly.
No numeric keypad on this baby, so it has a smaller footprint (I use spreadsheets a fair bit, so will see how this goes).
Note the cable does detach, so better for on the go.

Free shipping, and MS Store says 30 days returns policy.

I've used this as a transaction as part of the targeted Cashrewards promo (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/624384)

I have the storm trooper version of this, was on Amazon UK for like $70 on a previous deal.

Also a spreadsheet warrior, and I don't really miss the Tenkey. Only thing was muscle memory always reaching for the enter key on the far right, but that went away after a couple weeks.

Love the compact size. O-rings, while definitely help suppress the noise, makes typing feel crap. It's still more noisy than a membrane keyboard too. I just smash keys and let everyone deal with it šŸ˜‚

    • Thanks. Was hoping it would be softer than the current Kogan keyboard.
I don't think I'd like to go back to crappy membrane keyboard.
At least if the feel is bad, I can return (but I'll need to make sure I get a third transaction for the CR deal).

      • +1

I went from the Kogan keyboard to this (also the stormtrooper)

The difference is night and day. The pinging and the loose stabilisers on the kogan compared to this really makes your ears bleed.

I do however miss the numpad, but I work in Finance so really need it, but I've just bought a separate numpad to go with it that I can put away when I am not working.

      • You can always remove the O-rings and see how you go. Mine came with a tool to pluck the keys out.

    • I bought the storm trooper version too and would agree with this 100%

    • I've got the Stormtrooper version too but my experience with the O-rings is that it's mostly the same feel (~90%). Again YVMV - I had an even noisier Coolermaster Pro LM with Cherry Brown switches and this board with O-Rings sounds much quieter. Also I've bought the Razer PBT keycaps and it seems to make typing sounds less high-pitched? Though that might be the towel I've put under the keyboard.

    • I have the storm trooper edition. Nothing really wrong with it, felt rigid enough, minimal stem wobble. Though, out of the three keyboards with tactile switches I own, it is my least favourite. I couldn't tell you exactly why.

The thing that got to me was the prompt to install Razer Synapse software everytime it was connected to my computer. Eventually I worked around it by denying permission to a certain folder.

  • Had this one before, its noisy… even with O rings. I'm now ended up getting MX Keys after all those mechanical keyboards..

    • Noisy in comparison to what switches?

      • it feels more like Gateron Brown switches but the noise is coming from its backplate, O ring does not help to reduce this noise.
If you want something more serious, try to spend some extra $ and get Leopold keyboards. Much better.

        • In my experience, it does reduce the noise from the key striking but there's no reduction in the lift off or the spring back from the switches. It is noisy but I disagree that the o-rings don't help reduce the noise.

I've seen people stuff really cheap foam in the chassis to further muffle the noise caused by the springing back of the switches. MX keys are a different class of switches. The ones in this keyboard are still relatively mute for a mechanical keyboard. Just another thing to consider if sound matters to the user. :)

  • I bought this one from the MSY sale recently.

its still fairly noisy, even with the O rings.

The capslock key glows Green btw, its the only key with a different color light.

Its a very solid and heavy keyboard for its size and I dont think the legs give it enough angle.
But otherwise its not bad. does the job.

    • Tecware Phantom v2 TKL RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Outemu Red

      SKU# AC32938, Model# TWKB-P87ZORD
      $44.26

      For reference only

    • Do note that that is linear rather than tactile switches.

I see this come up a fair bit. Can anyone make a direct comparison with a Razer board?

maybe this one if you want tactile feedback? low profile tho, the normal one is oos. its hotswappable meaning if a switch dies you can take it out without opening the board and soldering.

theres these too, no reviews other than someone claiming theyre coming out of the same factory as rk61s, figured was cheap enough to give it a go, i bought a rgb kailh red one. was gonna buy the tecware too but defs would get roasted as i already have a crap ton of random cheapo keyboards and lot of ones that could use some fixing

        • What's wrong with all your cheapo keyboards? Also, could you have spent the money on one decent keyboard?

Personally, I definitely notice the difference in build quality as price increases.

          • @ihfree: i have a rando blue switch tkl that i got for like 20$ but didn't realise it was uk layout when i bought it,
and i got a few with failed switches that i need to replace (i've ordered a soldering iron) including a k65.

  • Switches that have dampening on both the travel down and up will be quieter than this. I can think of Razer's linear optical switches that have this.. or a membrane keyboard.

    • Cherry MX Silent Red and Silent Black switches :)
      They are so quiet.

Also Razer's first gen linear optical switches are noisy, they added dampeners on I think on their 60% line up (huntsman mini) onward.
Hence why my Huntsman TE linear is noisy (and it didn't help that the keyboard was very hollow inside).
