    Two and a half years before we can travel again. I won't me using my ski stuff in Aspen till then, so all the money I save on ozbargain will just have to go into my JV OZB retirement fund jar.

        NZ skifields are the size of my uncles farm, the snow is moist and that frozen refrozen goodness alot of the time :(

        Not saying Aus is much better but yeh, if you've experienced something much better it's difficult to fully enjoy.

          Did 3 days of diamond encrusted coral in NZ and it was brutal. Day 4 saw 54cm fall over night. Most amazing ride I have ever experienced. Couldnt see anything from my knee down. If you had to leave on Day 3..your perception would be a little different. But that's snow for ya.
          P.S. Your uncles farm must be massive. Trebel summit to base run is over 4km..

          You may in in the wrong market - the "Go-To" in the eighties was the private helicopter trip into the Southern Alps with a garauntee of a minimum of ~ 8000 meters [3,000 Ft] of skiable slope that had never carried a skier since the fish was pulled up by Maui.

          In context it is. 2.6 million doses, 1 million fully vaccinated and it will only keep going up. And this is in a country with a fairly minimal amount of cases. Im actually not referencing australia, im specifically talking about the us where 1/3 of the population is fully vaccinated. Im not saying travel now, im saying its unlikely that on the current trajectory that it will take 2.5 years before everyone vaccinated/travel opens up.

            @Shef3000: mickeyjuiceman needs to understand the concept of “binary”. What I stated is based on statistics and the methodology around that, as provided by the CDC. A perfect example of a non-binary outcome is the PCR test, which is widely being used to determine if someone is a “case” or not. What they do is they take some kind of a continuum and they arbitrarily say this point is the difference between positive and negative. All depends on where you set the number of “cycles”

    Honest question. What would be the equivalent non-homebrand/retail brand for the jacket? I assume these are decent but they won't match up with dedicated mountain gear brands like Colombia? Or HH gear that I own atm.

      Same same. I have Columbia gear accessed wholesale (FYI manufacture cost for Columbia is about 10% of retail price) and ALDI gear. Not much different in temperature handling (had both at over 20 below) just some have different utility value with type and number of pockets and stuff like that.
      The main difference is mark up. Eg. You can buy an end of Northern winter clearance Columbia jacket in an outlet store in Colorado or Vegas for sub 150USD and that same jacket model will be New season stock for Southern winter a month later and retail over 500AUD.
      It's all made in Vietnam. Personally while the kids were growing, ALDI was the bomb for good priced effective gear that has been used in Japan, NZ, OZ, Canada and the USA with no issue. We spend about 4 weeks a year above the snow line and 10 to 14 days on skis.
      Unless you are a brand snob, it does the job fine.

        Totally agree.

        Wife was a internationally qualified ski instructor for a few years and I spent a whole season with her in Chamonix using an Aldi jacket throughout.

        Zero problems except one shoulder pad had to be partly re-stitched due to carrying skis so often. Real "seasonairs" would of course used gaffer tape.

        She had all the badged gear and frankly there was no real performance difference on any form of snow/terrain.

      I wore cheap aldi stuff on whistler and it was -20 or -25 on the peak, had no issues whatsoever. I don't know what benefit the dedicated mountain gear could have, unless you're doing some super serious stuff

      if anything the dedicated stuff might have less pockets but might look cooler

        The really good stuff breaths better..

        So it's good in -40 with the right layering, and it's good in 20c

        You can hike up a hill in it and not sweaty like you have come out of a shower

          Yep. Last Feb (just b4 covid got real in Aus) I spent a month in Vancouver on work trip & went skiing whenever I got the chance. Wore my Aldi lined jacket to there, came back with an Arcteryx shell.

          The Aldi did the job yes, but the outermost layer was not as waterproof. Still remember one night on Grouse mountain it was sleeting, and by the end of the chairlift ride the moisture has seeped thru and it was unpleasantly cold. And once indoors the fleece liner started to emit back all the trapped humidity - was so glad to finally get home that evening.

          And it (the Aldi) is also quite heavy..

      I found the material on the Aldi jackets and pants definitely wears out faster. Any area that has frequent abrasion like the sleeve rubbing on the side, or the knees hitting the ground showed wear by the 2nd season. A little bit of pilling and loose fibres. But at that price you could buy a new set every season anyway and still come out with change vs a branded pair. Also the Aldi jackets seem to have a lot of pockets and compartments for threading cables, which you will only find in much more expensive jackets. Softshell is hopeless. It will absorb water after a couple of sits on the ground or wet chairlift seat.

      Personally I prefer the gortex stuff. Very waterproof and breathable and long wearing. I've gone back to gortex gear from the Aldi stuff.

      Best to get in early for sizing and the fact that anything you see left once the season has started would most likely be worn returns once the @#&$ people have gone for their one day/weekend trip for the year. They really need to change their return t&c for the ski clothing.

                I have 4 local stores that are supplied from Vic distro centre, and I recall the 3 i went to having stock.

    Just a heads up, if you buy one of the jackets, be prepared to encounter many others (usually newbies) in the same jacket if you’re at an Aussie resort. May seem insignificant, however I was at Falls Creek with a friend 2 seasons ago, he wore an Aldi jacket from a few years back, and I came across probably 20-30 other people wearing it and it did cause some confusion at the bottom of runs etc lol

      Yep had that with the kids gear we got them a couple of years back. A lot of kids going down the mountain all looking the same.

      As far as the gear went, did the job for the most part. Not sure about the adult stuff but for the kids I'd look for better gloves though if they are the same as before. Their hands were freezing as the gloves weren't too waterproof.

    ALDI snow gear is no joke. Have the ski jacket and pants (purchased 4 years ago) and used them when I was in Tromso January 2020 (before COVID). They were both adequate even in -15 degree evenings chasing the northern lights. Would recommend paying a bit more for decent boots as the Aldi boots are easy to break and water/snow can get in.

    I'm a bit peeved the designs of the ski jackets in recent years have been consistently either black or dark blue. I like the grey/white/red design from 4 years ago.

    What's the difference between the normal ski jacket/pants and premium ones? Are the normal ones sufficient? (ski trip at most once/year so beginner stuff is fine)

          Ahh thanks for the pointer, I didn't even think to look at the descriptions in the catalogue (not sure who neg'd you).
          Looks like premium are 20,000/20,000 waterproof/breathable, the normal are 12,000/10,000; premium has YKK zippers; premium has inner jacket that unzips entirely and uses Primaloft vs the normal jacket's Dupont Sorona (no idea the diff between these, but I do hear Primaloft Gold & Silver mentioned a lot in very high-end sleeping bags but have never heard of Sorona). Both seem to have pit zips, internal pocket, ski pass pocket. No idea of the practical difference between 20000/20000 vs 12000/10000 on the waterproof/breathable ratings (maybe 12k waterproof rating is practically no different from 20k in snow conditions even though it is technically worse ?)

            @mathematicalcoffee: Australian conditions at the snow tend to have a higher chance of rain. Lots of places overseas (where most of the ski kit is designed for) are cold enough that rain is less likely and snow is more likely. If it rains, kit that is less waterproof might eventually let water in. If i lived in Colorado, Hokkaido or the Alps I would be less concerned about waterproofing, skiing at Mt Buller I always buy Gore-Tex or at least 20,000 mm waterproofing.

    Quality is a bit hit and miss on this stuff. I bought the standard (not premium) adult ski gloves a few years back to use as a spare pair. On the first use the material started to disintegrate half way through the day. But every year the stuff they get is different, so this year's gloves might be fine.

    Decided to go check out my local ALDI. I have to say the quality is questionable on some of the items: I unbuttoned a pair of ski pants to try them on (so I hadn't even put them on yet) and one of the two buttons flew off and rolled under a shelf. It was the last pair in 'Small' size too… I did end up buying a ski jacket, as the price seems very reasonable (and I didn't encounter any issues when trying on the jacket).

    So just make sure you have a look over the items before buying (there might be a button missing haha…).

      Whenever things are all gone and May next year. -Unless- you live at Cooma or Albury as surplus stock can find its way there if another store had lots left.
