Yumbo Burger $3 @ Hungry Jack's

613

Let's go back to the 1970s….

As reported -

The fan favourite Australian burger first realised in the 1970s will be making a return to coincide with Hungry Jack’s 50th anniversary.

What’s a Yumbo you might ask? Well, if you were born after 1990 you might struggle: the burger was a Hungry Jack’s staple during the 1970s and 1980s, before being discontinued in 1991.

Consisting of five slices of hot ham and two slices of melted cheese on a sesame bun, the Yumbo will again be available across Australian Hungry Jack’s stores from next Tuesday for $3.

      • I hope Red Rooster brings back the Oriental Chicken Wings Pack.

        • -3

I would love to travel to Oriental one day to have the chicken wings authentically made

      • the Souvlaki sounds great tbh

  • +26

    It really is a Ham-burger

    • -2

It doesn't look like real ham though…

      • +1

ham and cheese in a burger bun … WOW

    • I have some burger with my ham!

  • +10

this is a sandwich not a burger

    • The ham would have to have been cooked at some point, so surely that would make it a burger?
Or must it be hot when served?

      • +4

So at some point as it cools it goes from a burger back to a sandwich?

    • They give you the hot ham, the burger is within you.

      • +1

What do they do with the hot ham water?

        • +15

With all that steamed ham water condensation and the flame grill refraction it would look like aurora borealis in the hungry jacks kitchen

          • +1

@ruddiger7: This is such an underappreciated comment…

          • +5

            @ruddiger7: Uh
            Aurora Borealis?
            At this time of year?
            At this time of day?
In this part of the country?
            Located entirely within your kitchen?

        • +1

disappointing that everyone gets a Simpsons reaction to an Arrested Development reference :(

Any "ham"burger is really a cake according to the cuberule messiah.

      • "slice of pie

        (taco on its side)"

        i don't trust this metric

  • +21

    That sounds disgusting.

    I must have it

    • +1

What makes it sound so disgusting? It's just a ham and cheese sammich…

      • Exactly!

    • sounds like a delicacy compared to the cheesy cheeseburger with that revolting cheese sauce, the most disgusting burger i've ever TRIED to eat, few bites and i threw it out….

  • +2

    I don't believe it!
    @dealbot - reveal your sauces! ;)

  • +1

TIL Hungry Jack's used to be a Subway

“Loved them and they were about twice the size of the burgers today and 50 cents,”

So now it'll be twice as small and six times more expensive.

    • six times more expensive

Not really. Back then you could buy a house in Sydney for 50c!

      • Lol I think some people take certain comments on Ozb too seriously..
I mean look at the burger, it's a joke in itself

        • +3

I never take any comments on Ozb seriously, makes life easier

  • +4

Gross. I will have 2 thanks!

  • +10

    That looks absolutely cursed

    • +9

But it comes with a free froghurt

      • +11

        The froghurt is also cursed…

        • Awww

        • +1

But you get your choice of toppings.

      • Underrated.

  • Yikes

  • +7

Will be quite amusing to see what it looks like compared to the pic :)

I expect all of the 'ham' to be in a flat clump and occupy between 30 and 60% of the bun size.

    • amusing to see what it looks like compared to the pic

      here

      • +1

thats one of those rebel vegan burgers isnt it?

        • +6

No, it's the Yumbo burger I bought in 1989 and forgot to eat.

          • +1

@jv: I both downvoted you for making me see that image and upvoted you for making me laugh.

        • The rebel burger isn't vegan.

      • +1

I was not ready for this. Not this early. Especially not on a Monday.

  • Oh nice!

Pretty sure they had hot dogs back in the day too?

  • +2

Do they use Australian ham or is it imported?

  • Is this bigger than a Big Mac?

  • +5

We can see why it was discontinued

  • +7

Yumbo with pineapple was the best thing ever eaten in the mid-1980's.

    • +2

I would actually buy this if it had pineapple

  • Worth it?

    • +1

      Nah!

    • yep. Tried it a couple years back - was tasty

  • +3

    Yumno

  • Missed advertising opportunities

"it's sooo wateryyy…and yet, there's a SMACK of ham to it"

  • +1

If it's a fan favourite how come they stopped selling it?

  • Hungry Jack's trolling people by bringing it out in time of Ramadan.

    • +2

Don't worry, it contains no actual pork

    • Haram: ramadan or not.

  • +3

This sounds like a Ham sandwich with extra step.

  • +3

Yumbo's were (profanity) awesome. (profanity) the haters!

  • I'm lovin' it

  • +2

That thing definitely looks like it'd be improved with the addition of chips in it.

Is the ham flame grilled though?

    • +1

I think it used to be microwaved.

  • +9

why can't they bring back the old grilled chicken burgers instead

    • Which old grilled chicken? They have kept the one from the 90s with the ranch sauce, but not as prominently. It's in the current vouchers though.

      • +4

Agreed. Everytime I have gotten a grilled chicken Burger lately the chicken is so over cooked it is like rubber. And that is from different HJ locations over the course of a year. I’ve given up.

How about bring back the original spicy nuggets that they used to carry and the original onion rings.

Here is a photo of the original nuggets-
        https://www.change.org/p/hungry-jacks-bring-back-hungry-jack…

        • +2

The old nuggets were the best, but they probably got too many complaints from people who don't think nuggets should have any flavour.

      • the grilled chicken they have now is nothing like the old one. The old one had a processed chicken pattie while the new has a fillet of chicken. The old bun was different. Can't comment on the sauce because I haven't had the new one since they first brought it out and it made me sad.

    • Yes! The burger buns on the grilled chicken were so unique to HJs but they gone back to using the standard buns.

  • +4

What’s a Yumbo you might ask? Well, if you were born after 1990 you might struggle:

any kids born after 1990 can’t cook… all they know is hungry’s , charge they phone, shades, flame grilled , eat hot chip & lie

    • +1

      Lol but no.
Can also cook microwave meals, ramen, smashed avo on toast and with several YouTube tutorials maybe even a Hellofresh recipe /s

    • +2

I was born in 1977 and never heard of the thing. At least I now know why Hungry Jacks didn't really come to Sydney until the late 90's. They sold this shit

    • +1

It appears some users are not memeologists like your learned self.

    Steamed Hams?

    • +4

And you call them Steamed Yumbos? Despite the fact they are clearly ham sandwiches?

      • +1

        Yes. It's a regional dialect.

  • +3

    Can I get it steamed?

  • yumbo yumbo bucko

  • When?
