Want to Buy a Brand New Small Hatchback

Hello.

I am looking to buy a brand new small hatchback (Automatic). I will pay full cash and no finance. I live in Melbourne. I have few options but not sure which one to go with. Please help with any advice and suggestions. Thank you.

And one important thing. How much price negotiation can be done?

Kia Picanto S Automatic ($19,570.54 Drive Away)
Kia Rio S Automatic ($22,070.54 Drive Away)
Suzuki Swift GL Navigator Automatic ($23,085.00 Drive Away)
Mazda 2 Hatch G15 Pure Automatic ($24,990.00 Drive Away)

    Welcome to Ozcars.

There's already a number of threads related to buying new cars.

Currently with a shortage of new vehicles on the market discounts are few and far between.

Yes. I joined OzBargain this morning only to post this in forum to get help.

      • Welcome to OzBargain. I can’t help with advice but welcome nonetheless.

  • Picanto S auto should be 17,990 driveaway. The 4spd auto is a bit outdated but it'll do the job.

Rio S auto should be 21,490 driveaway.

This is all via Kia's build and order website. If you're limited in budget both are great options. Current gen Mazda 2 I would argue isn't worth the huge premium that it commands.

Consider the Hyundai i30 as well.

If car is in stock (which I doubt) you may get a few hundred off or some floor mats but now is not the time to be buying a car if you don't really need it.

i30 appear to be in a different car segment again.
if you're going to consider an i30 may as consider cerato hatch too.

      • i20 then

        • i20 has been discontinued for quite a while.

Take a look at the MG3. Inb4 the China hate lol

    • 3 star safety rating

      • 3 sTaR SaFeTy RaTiNg

Jeep’s have less and Mustangs have less… still doesn’t stop people from buying them.

A lot of the vehicles that are on ANCAP now get low rating for not including shit like blind spot monitoring (new Mitsubishi van scored 0). Or it gets a high rating becuse it was tested back in 2015 and prior to the new categories. It muddies the water on how the car holds up in a crash.

ANCAP need to fix their shit system and have a “crash” rating and a “safety features” rating and stop penalising cars that perform well in crash tests because it doesn’t have a heated and cooled headlight leveling knob…

And MG are one of the fasted growing brands in Australia at the moment, so they must be building an OK vehicle and the 3 sTaR RaTiNg doesn’t seem to worry too many people if sales figures are anything to go by…

  • Drive them all, pick one.

  • Get whatever you can get stock of. Discounts are almost non-existent for mainstream cars now.

  • Vote for Kia Picanto S Automatic ($19,570.54 Drive Away)

If you might want to look at the Suzuki Baleno too.

  • Best car on your list would be the Mazda 2 so I would go for that one. If you wanted to save a few thousand and have a longer warranty, then the Kia Rio. Wouldn't touch the Picanto.

Normally you could get around 10% I think. But with the current market, and the extravagantly high demand for cars at the moment, there won't be much wriggle room.

  • My pick would be a low km/ex-demo Kia Picanto GT-Line. Same budget and much nicer vehicle. Hell, for that budget, you may find a very low km year or two old GT and have spare change in your pocket and still have 5+ years of warranty left on it.

  • What a world we live in when base subcompact shitboxes are $20-$25k fmd…
