Buying Isopropyl Alcohol

I'm trying to find ~1-5L of this stuff and it seems pretty hard to find a good deal…

Either paying through the roof for some 500ml product at Bunnings, or a decent rate in 1-5L bulk but then shipping is always crazy expensive.

Anyone know of any local (canberra)/decent online stores to get this stuff?

Cheers
Chthonic

I’ve just spent a long time looking too.

Recently got the isocol brand from woolies for $8.4 on sale for 375mL. Hardly a deal, but I only wanted that much and it’s the best price you can get for that amount.

    • Are we sure that is 100% iso? I have it and seems it's mixed with water.

      • It’s not 100%, it’s 64%. OP didn’t ask for 100%.

  • Try Dowlings in Fyshwick or one of the stalls in Fyshwick Fresh Market itself.

    How about these people… $30 for 5 L, and $10 shipping.

    Seems like a good price.

I second this one - just bought 10L from here recently and it arrived pretty quickly.

Works well for cleaning up resin.

    • This has been the rough price for years

$15 shipping for 5l - 20l of a dangerous good is crazy expensive?

    Tried eBay?

$37.5 for 5 litres, seems deecnt?

Last deal was only a few dollars cheaper. Don't know about quality though but.. I assume it should be similar.

might be possible to rustle up an ok ~$40 price or less via catch too, if using discounted egift / unidays code.

    sigh…remember these days? :)

  • I bought this the other day: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/sydney-solvents-isopropyl-alcoh…
$20 for 5L from Sydney Solvents, $10 delivery fee. I figured $40 is fine for 5L, it'll last a long time.
    $10 for 1L.

  • Look up commercial cleaning supply joints. They often have stuff like that

  • Any good deals for 70% ?

70% actually cleans a little better than 100%, the 30% water adds like lubricant or whatever. You can just add water to your 100% to make 70%.

        • Depends what you are cleaning.

You want 100% if you are cleaning circuit boards.

          • @deme: not an electronic expert here, but I usually just use methos, which seems to be ethanol, rather than methanol, just with an added bittering agent to stop people from drinking it.

wouldn't the difference only be the time it takes to evaporate? or are is iso a better solvent?

            • @elcheapoinoz: For electronics I'd stick with IPA. It's just ethanol (which evaporates very quickly) and water (as an impurity).
Methylated Spirits contains other stuff than just ethanol and water.. which may cause issues with corrosion / conductivity if used on electronics. It will largely depend on the exact blend in the Methylated Spirits… but often that's not labelled, and hence for surety is just best avoided (in reliability focused / high volume electronics).
              Your mileage may vary…

      • 70% is better against bacteria generally because 100% dries off too quickly and some bacteria can still live. More information on the link you provided.

Thanks!!! This is the best price I've seen.

        • If you want to use it as a sanitizer then just diluting it will dry your hands out, but this time last year I had to do it and it worked okay.

    Try https://www.sydneysolvents.com.au/isopropyl-alcohol-ipa-isop…

Be aware that unless you are in the chemical industry or in a hospital then there is No such thing as 100% Pure Isopropyl Alcohol, it will be 99.x% and the lower the x the cheaper. Some cheap ones are 98.9%. For the vast majority of uses the 1% is not a problem.

IPA is hygroscopic, it readily absorbs water from the air. So you're never really going to have 100% IPA…

Hence, for all intensive porpoises, >95% IPA w.w. is 'pure'.
If you're really performing some action which absolutely can't have anything other than IPA involved, then you won't trust any supplied source and you'll be performing your own purification rituals.

  • I was looking for something cheap, I think Sydney solvent is one of the cheaper options out there (at least that's where I ended up getting it from when I needed some for cleaning).

  • I saw that price at Bunnings and found Jaycar had it for a much more reasonable price.

  • Have you tried making your own?

  • Thanks for the replies everyone, especially those that mentioned specific Canberra suggestions

I decided to go with le beuty

Figured a mate would wanna go halves with me
