ALDI Office Chair $39.99 Starts on 11/Jan (Wed)

130

This chair was $69.99 about 3 and 9 months ago (2 previous appearances). The same chair is $79 on EBay delivered and $99 plus delivery from "Milan Direct".

Correction: I didn't notice the slight difference at first, the previously $69.99 ones have a high back, this one has a medium back, so they are not direct comparisons.

    Thanks.

MD: 'Australia's best price guaranteed!' my ass.

How do you know it's the same as the MD one? I can not seem to find brand, and the MD seems to have a higher back (possibly extension though). Anyway, more importantly, do you know what the weight limit is? I'm about 100kg (maybe a couple over) and noticed many cheap chairs has a 100kg or less limit.

EDIT: The ebay one looks nicer too. But I get your point, similar style. Good price regardless, will probably stop by and check it out if I have time (and if any are left) as I need a new chair.

I'd say it rivals the "Medium" from MD for $89 rather than the high back version posted.

    • Had gone too long for edit.. but anyway, on a second look, the ebay chair doesn't look half bad for 79 incl delivery :) Might go for something like that instead.

Both the MD and eBay chairs are nicer to look at, and are high-backed. They Aldi version is a medium backed chair. Not really a fair comparison.

  • does anyone know if this chair can be assembled without with arm rests?

    • Yes - just assembled mine and the arms are optional

FYI: I had one of these chairs. The problem is that the back isn't supported by the arms, just by 4 screws at the (chipboard) base. I broke two bases just sitting (not leaning back) in these chairs before giving up and tossing it out.

It's a stupid design that puts way too much pressure on the screws. If you want a mesh chair, try to find one where the arms attach to the back (eg) - it provides a lot more support.

Personally, I wouldn't buy another one even for $20.

    • Looking at the construction of the Aldi chair I just assembled after purchasing it this morning I would guess the chair you are describing is NOT in the same class as this Aldi one. The Aldi one uses a 4 bolt bracket with Allen head bolts into metal inserts in the seat platform to provide a very strong attachment for the back frame.

I am not impressed by your guess that if it looks similar it is the same and should be damned.

BTW I am 100Kg and have leant the chair back hard enough to lift the front feet off the ground in testing before I wrote this.

Yes, that's exactly like the bases I broke. When I said "screws", I meant allen head bolts (because they "screw" into the base). The problem isn't with the bolts, but with the way the bolt receptacles are fastened to the base.

In my situation, both times, the bolts pulled out of the chipboard based while still firmly screwed into the bolt receptacles (ie they pulled out still screwed into the receptacle). At the same time bending one or two of the entire bolt/bolt receptacle pairs in the process (enough that they couldn't be unscrewed again).

As I said, I think it's a poor design, as the whole weight of the back of the chair plus any pressure you put on the back, is transferred directly to the bolt receptacles. Because the base was made of chipboard, it just separated along the wood fibres.

An easy way to fix this would be to resign the mounting plates so that the weight is spread over a large area. Or have the arms attach to the chair back (like my replacement chair has) to provide a 2nd and 3rd support for the back.

BTW I am 100Kg and have leant the chair back hard enough to lift the front feet off the ground in testing before I wrote this.

I should say I too tested it before purchase and post purchase. This seems to be a stress-related failure as it took several weeks of daily use before failure.

        • Thanks for your reply. It sounds like I am likely to be pleased that I have the 60 day return warranty. Only hope is that this was a batch problem rather than a general fault with the product design.

  • Also the same chair as MD and ebay here at Officeworks, where i bought mine. Didn't realise their were so many copies/versions.

Quite comfy, wish the tilt adjust was able to be locked though, rather than free.

The office chair is available from Wednesday 11 January, not Saturday 14th as suggested in the title.

  • I bought one from Dicksmith for $49.95 and for $10 extra, it is better than aldi one.

This is not the same one as in October last year. Having said that, the design is similar & I returned that one then as I found the rear of the seat to be too far back & not comfortable.

This is the one back then: http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_19237.htm

  • Thanks guys for pointing out the errors.

how do you return the chair after you assembled this?

    • Ride it to Aldi

Disassemble just the way you assembled.

  • Any comments on these chair and how they are holding up? I've broken THREE chairs over the past year or two (oh why do I never keep receipts!). I'm 80kg, so they SHOULDN'T break, but for each chair the damn plastic "star base" (the thing at the bottom of the chair that the castors attach to) all have cracked and then the chair tips over :(

I have a habit of leaning back a bit though LOL… and I'm after a smaller computer chair, not a massive high-backed one.

I had bought the chairs to replace a large leather high-back chair I bought from HN probably 7 years ago, I used it for years and it was great, but it's too big for the new house… so I put it in storage in the garage. I'm using it again now until I can find a decent cheap computer chair that won't break so easily!
