I bought a pair from this deal and I'm happy with them. I use them at my PC but I've tried them on my phone and they work well on there too. one of the reasons I chose the Senn over ATH is the giant ear cups and flexible headband. they don't clamp at all and I can wear them for hours without issues.
I got a pair from this deal and I can say they are the most comfy pair of headphones I've owned. They are so worth it and they sound just as good as you'd expect. I saw someone ask how well they work with a phone and from my experience you can't go wrong (besides the somewhat high price that some would consider?). Not going to lie though, I can't really is if I know much about what to look for.
Can these be driven by a phone easily?
Reasonably, but also demo against the AKG K371 and the Sennheiser HD 560S at this price point.
The 599 is a very relaxed sound, but it's also a bit fuzzy but today's standards.
At this price, you're better off with the HD 560S ($240 on Amazon), the HD 58X ($240 on Drop), or maybe stepping up to the HD 6XX ($300 on Drop) or ATH-R70X ($400 locally). On the closed back side of things, the AKG K371 are sitting at $170 on Amazon, which is probably a better deal than this.
I'd expect the Drop prices to start sliding again, but I feel that every other headphone mentioned is better value than this depending on what combination of audio you're working with (music, movies, games, analytical work, mastering, final mix, etc).
$150 is where this headphone should be at on sale these days.
I vouch for HD 560S, I found them very very good, I prefer them to my 6xx and even Focal Clears (call me weird).
The 560S might be a really good value choice for EDM, movies and gaming, but there's a perceived peak at 5 kHz that some people might hate (it's there to boost soundstage).
It's the newest Sennheiser on the market though, so it comes with all the latest R&D behind it.
I just checked DMS' table <1k headphones:
"Painfully average and non-offensive, but a really solid headphone. I still prefer HD560S, HD58X, or HD6XX. If you already own it, enjoy it."
@radissimo: I'd be careful with DMS, as he seems to have some very particular sound signature preferences. He really enjoys BeyerDynamic headphones, for example. He also raves about the 560S, where others are more hesitant.
The 599 has just been superseded over time by the 58X and 560S, that's all. I suspect there will be a slightly warmer, slightly less peaky version of the 560S in time, and it will redefine that price bracket.
Hi radissimo can you comment on the comfort of the HD 560S vs something like this or the HD 598? I have been thinking of upgrading from the HD 598 to another open back headphone. The vocals and the soundstage of the 598s is the best I have heard and the comfort is great.
Are the HD 560S worth it as an upgrade?
If you're keen on music, particularly older music, the upgrade is the 6XX but it comes at the expense of soundstage. The 560S is much more neutral than the 599, better bass and treble extension and probably bigger soundstage, but it can be a little peaky depending on the type of music you listen to.
The chassis design is basically the same for all the 500 series open backs, save for the 58X.
can anybody help me decide between the 560s and the 58x? I listen mostly to rock and pop music, play fps games and watch some movies and tv shows
560S- rock and pop will rock
I prefer the HD 599 over my HD 58X. And the comfort level of the HD 599 is beyond compare. The HD 58X clamp quite hard for some people. I can't even feel the HD 599 on my head, they're so comfortable.
These are really nice sounding headphones.
Easy to drive, just turn it up a little more (+10-20%) on mobiles, laptops, on board sounds. If you can get over the colour, I only use it at home so.
I got it off amazon too, for like 219.
I've never warmed up to the design of this particular Senns. Always prefer the 580/609/etc overall style with black colour
Very good headphones, even better with a DAC. Very comfortable, have worn for 5+ hours with no issues.
Open back so remember, not good for public transport or anywhere where you don't want to hear people or want people to hear what you are listening to.
Apparently very low coolness of colour.
Pass.
I own a pair of the black ones, I'm no audiophile but these are a wonderful pair of headphones to use at home on my computer.
These are amazing headphones ive had a pair of 598s (essentially same) for 8 years i use almost everyday. They are amazingly comfortable sound fantastic and very durable. They are open back keep in mind so they leak sound and fairly large (not heavy) so not good for travelling. 10/10 for what they are designed for.
I have the 598 too, in fact both the open and closed versions. I got them a few years back for $135ea (I know, killer!) They are indeed very comfortable and durable. I use both sets regularly…not together obviously:)
was a bit cheaper, but this is a good deal nonetheless
