    Microsoft Security Essentials.

    I used to use AVG free, but it's constant nagging to upgrade to the paid version gave me the shits. And on the plus side, MSE uses less system resources and AVG.

      I've been using MSE since it was released and have not yet had any problems with malware or viruses…

      Not sure why people keep recommending MSE, I'm assuming either because it's free or they're too lazy to do some in-depth reading:

      Or they just like the fact there are virtually NO parameters to configure.

      MSE scores well below other freeware alternatives like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, AVG, Avira Free and Avast Free.

      Me personally, I chose ESET for AV, MBAM for Spyware and Comodo for a Software Firewall. Couple that with a hardware firewall on a decent-brand router and you're bullet-proof.

      Everything else is just a placebo and a false sense of security and I've run the gamut of AV/Spyware/Firewall apps.

    This is a good deal but I have had Avast! installed for almost a year since the last freebie on OB and tweaked it how I want so I'll wait for a discounted purchase for that, paid versions do offer extras, sandbox and other automation that free versions don't and also nagging and ads is something I hate.

    MSE is fine but you have to wonder how efficient it could really be, if MS are aware of the issues why don't they patch the OS? Also it is becoming the most common so that means the most targeted too.

      Perhaps we should regard MS SE as an adjunct to the OS, so it is in fact an ongoing enhancement to the OS. Prefer that to the Apple route, where they pretend there are no vulnerabilities. Yeah, sure.

      And yep, no nagging, apart from when we start a PC which hasn't been used for a while and MS wants us to urgently update.

    I can't recommend Bitdefender enough, especially for $4/yr.. Yes, you can use AVG, Avast, MSE but for less than the price of a cup of coffee or slurpee, i'd rather have AV software that actually works and doesn't give me false positives.

        Exactly. Working in IT I have used every anti-virus under the sun and MSE & AVG are in the top 5, probably top 3.

    I have been using Avast Free Version for years but maybe i should be using Microsoft Security Essentials?

      There's nothing wrong with the vast majority of AV software and certainly Microsoft Security Essentials is a good (free) product. It's also low on resources which is a good thing.

      Recent studies have shown that the main vectors for malware tend to be out-of-date versions of Flash, Java and Adobe Reader. People may keep their O/S up-to-date but neglect these apps.

    does BitDefender put much drag on the CPU like AVG does? Have read its a very large installation. Maybe fine in quad core machines?

    Hows it compare to Eset's NOD?

      As a longtime ESET NOD32 user myself I don't believe Bitdefender comes close to using as few resources as NOD32. It (Bitdefender) is a big installation but then it does have anti-phishing and privacy protection (as well as a few other things) built-in. These all come at the cost of using additional memory/CPU cycles. PC Mag gave it a good review.

      If you ensure your OS is always up-to-date with patches, if you make sure Flash/Java/Adobe Reader are always current, if you turn off AutoRun on USB and CD drives and you don't click stupid links in e-mails you are unlikely to get anything (also avoid the "dark side" of the web).

      In fact, the only virus I ever got came from a shrink-wrapped commercial (MindScape) game I bought in the mid-90's.

    Ive been using BitDefender since the 2009 version which was a pretty good antivirus program. 2010 version used to occasionally crash but otherwise was usable.

    The 2012 version has made my internet experience miserable. Bitdefender 2012 is the biggest heap of crap I have installed onto my comp.

      For everyone without a log file, please read their forums. The 2012 software seems to be lacking somewhat, so best do your homework, before buying the product.
