  • Dup?

    • Sort of, same deal different code as PLUSBR10 expired so don't know if should be posted as new deal or code updated on last one.

      QVO is worse mate

    • +1

QVO budget version to EVO though

    • +1

870 Evo is $15 more. Better to get the newer and faster model

  • +4

Make sure to submit the cash back before installing the drive as you need to take a photo of the serial number… Well it asks you to anyway. Same with invoice.

    • +5

Plus be prepared for the site to reject the serial number and the process to take weeks.

Mine went through without a problem.

      • Yep, that's what happened for me.

      • Yep agreed, my two 970 Evo Plus(s) are in limbo with the promo-au team. It's only $34 if it doesn't resolve I guess.

  • Good deal. Takes ages to get cashback thou. as slow as cashrewards or shopback

  • Updated code for last one but anyway.

  • Is this good enough for every day use? How does it connect to a laptop as an external storage?

    • +1

Yep, my main machine was booting off one of these for ages until I replaced it with an M2 drive. If you want to connect it to a laptop, you'll need to buy a 2.5" USB enclosure, they usually run somewhere between $10-20. I use Orico branded ones.

      • But does it worth it? or is too exposed to outside elements?

        • +1

Depends on what you consider "outside elements"… if you plan to be carrying it in the rain, then no? But I'd assume most portable HDDs/SSDs aren't waterproof.

Otherwise yeah I'd say it's worth it. The enclosure is sealed anyway, so no worries about dust or anything like that. If you're after something even more portable though, maybe look into a T5? I've seen them on sale around this price before… saves getting an enclosure for this.

  • should i buy two of these or go for 2tb option?

  • Also, can you install this in Dell XPS 13?

    • No that laptop does not have 2.5 inch bays. Could always get an external enclosure for it but by that point its not a heap cheaper than a T5

      • you mean an enclosure is not cheap?

      • or t5 is the portable version?

  • I wonder is PLUSPR10 is an approved Shopback code? If so, that’s another few bucks off. Then use eBay gift cards for another 3% off.

    Where's a decent deal on the 2TB?????

  • What's the sweetspot for 2.5inch SATA SSDs these days?

This SSD is tempting, but it's not that far off the price of a cheaper NVME M2 SSD. If you have a spare M2 slot, and you care about speeds (not everyone needs to), it's hard to want to get this over an M2 thing.

I'm happy to go SATA 2.5 for another drive but just wondering if you can get more capacity if you accept the slower transfer speeds than M2

    • Most people buy this just because they don't have M.2

    • +1

M2 is only slightly faster compared to SSD
For the price you save on SSD vs M2, but if every .03-1s matters to you, go for M2 based on loading speeds, not transfer.

      • Thanks for the vid! Very illuminating.

Negligible speed dif doesn't really matter for me. Learning that the dif is negligible is interesting. I am semi-noob so I had just assumed SATA would be cheaper cos it's an older standard? And I guess I was comparing the file transfer speeds too closely rather than real world impact (which I don't have).

But it inspired me to look at more vids and I came across this Linus vid comparing SATA v NVME v NVME gen 4.

  • waiting for 870 EVO SATA 2.5" deal…

  • OOS.

  • When does this deal expire? My eBay Plus subscription ends soon, so it would be ideal to tee this up with the $50 gift card on eBay Plus subscription renewal.

    • $50 gift card on eBay Plus

Won't work, it is not a normal eBay gift card.

      • Ah thank you for the heads up

        • A lot of people asked the same question with eBay plus deals.

  • I am still waiting for my cashback from Nov 2020…talk about being slow.
