This isn't a NAS, but rather a hard drive held out by Seagate to be good for NAS usage. Camel Camel Camel suggests it's a good price too - https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07H289S79

  • Seagate any better these days.. I've always been put off by Seagate since I experienced 4 hdd failures een with a rma within a very short time span in the early 00's. I havent had a WD die on me since 96.

    • +1

that's a long time to hold a grudge
Yes they're fine. I've got > 80TB of drives and about 2/3 or 3/4 are Seagate

      • True it was 4 seagate hdd failures within a very short timeframe even the RMA'ed one failed a week later. Then in 2009 I got a 3.5" portable seagate drive. I only used it 3 times and babied it making sure it was flat level and no shocks.. It failed 2 weeks into my purchase while I was overseas.

    • if you'd prefer WD, Red Plus 4TBs arent much more (and red plus are CMR, not SMR)

      • SMR much quieter, and better in desktops?
Guess fine in a Nas box, depending where located

nothing to do with noise, its the way the data is written/read on the platters and in a NAS it becomes problematic. you want CMR drives for a NAS.

    • Just got corrupted sectors with my WD 2TB hdd, after a few years less moderate use, had some family photos and videos lost. looking for a Seagate to replace it.

  • Thank you, my NAS drive start reporting on SMART errors… good timing I guess. What is not good, it seem like those drives timed to fail just as their 3 years warranty expires :-(

  • Thanks OP, just grabbed one, great price.

  • Great price, haven't seen them this low before. Paid $145 a few weeks ago.

  • I need help, I bought a SAMSUNG M.2 drive from one of the deal. I just watched a vid how to install it, just to find out that my mobo doesnt have M.2 slot lol … Any idea would be really appreciated

    • +1

If you have an extra PCIe slot you could try a M.2 to PCIe Adapter Card.

      • One of these. Are they all the same quality ? I dont want to get a dodgy adapter and lost all my data. The drive can be replace but not the data …

  • Umart has WD Red for the same price if you prefer WD

    • Any differences?

      • +1

WD Red is 5400rpm, Ironwolf is 5900rpm.
Otherwise no real discernible differences that I've noticed in my NAS.

How good is it for home usage??
WD seems to be more trustworthy than Seagate.

Adding an SSD as caching on TrueNas this would last me for years.

  • I wouldn't mid a cheap nas solution, mostly as a media server if you can chromecast to the tv etc from that kind of device (guess easier to use kodi/plex). I don't think I'd even bother with raid, just need to get rid of a lot of smaller/old HDDs with tv shows/movies on (320-500GB 3.5" drives etc).. almost don't care about them guess have to format and dump off to an electronics recycler, but wouldn't be bad being able to access my FLAC files without having my pc on.

  • Any cheap but good 2 bay Nas to use with this, guess Synology best. Always wanted a media server or something. Probably not functional enough plugging into belong router? I have some old external caddys could put a smart timer on perhaps?
