Ali Express? yea it's been around for years, it's huge. Haven't had any issues with it or Banggood (both Chinese based).

He's member since May 2020 I don't believe he never see AliExpress posted here. Maybe just trolling.

How much juice are your cigarette lighters generally designed to spit out?

    • +2

120w-180w at 12v depending on the circuit in the car.

Just keep in mind it has compatibility issues. I have a p30 pro and it is only capable of charging at normal speed, not quick charge or super fast charge. It seems the fast charging functions are specific to the Xiaomi phones. Otherwise it's just a normal charger for other phones. Also tested on Samsung s10, normal charge through usb-c. Usb port goes up to quick charge but not super fast charge.

I'd blame that on the p30 pro for using their own proprietary charging standard.
Other phones are similar with their own proprietary bullshit.
It's long past time everyone moved to USB PD.
The real issue here is that the charger is capable of delivering the power, just many phones don't support asking for it and favour using their own methods instead.
Thus here we are today with 2 main USB connectors, C and micro B (excluding iPhones) and 700 different charging standards.
USB PD has been around for years and supports up to 120W, it's past time all the mobile manufacturers fall inline and stick with this standard.

      • I hear ya!! Yeah I was so disappointed neither the p30 or Samsung would fast charge with this :(

      • Interesting. Do you have any rough idea of PD is required for charging a notebook (65w original usb-c adapter)? It does not mention it anywhere, so I'm assuming no…

        • Sorry, don't quite understand the question. Can you re-phrase it?
The "idea of PD charging" section is not making sense to me.

If you're asking if this thing will charge a notebook, the answer is yes if the notebook supports USB PD charging.
Just having a USB C socket alone doesn't guarantee charging support, some notebooks have a Type C port just for USB things, and have a seperate socket for charging.

Plugging this into a regular Type C port should not be an issue as safeguards are built in and the higher voltages need to be negotiated for, tus are not present by default.

Just have a look on AliExpress… Loads of other sellers doing this for a few $ cheaper…

    • Link one?

      • -2

Literally click on the sellers post link and scroll down….
Neg me all ya want it's there for cheaper 🤷

        • There are others that appear cheaper but they are listings offering multiple iterms and when selecting the 100w unit they are actually more expensive.
Here is one a few cents cheaper…
          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001292043817.html
Negged you anyway for being too lazy to post it.

          • @virtual81: Negging me for being too lazy to post it but you too lazy to search it… Just saying. If you really wanna know the same seller has the same item for $1.30 cheaper without any promo codes as a prime example.. if you scrolled down on their item.

How can a normal cigarette lighter socket produce 100 watts ?
    thats 8amps+

  • +1

    Not uncommon.
That is the upper realm on some vehicles.
I've seen some rated as low as 80W and some as much as 180W
120W seems common probably protected by a 15A fuse.

  • Even if my car can output 100W through the cigarette lighter port I would not draw that much current through a cheap tiny charger like that.
There is no efficiency rating mentioned, even if a 90% efficiency rate is assumed, that is still 10Ws of power lost as heat when operating at 100W.

    • I wouldn't not use it, but that's a fair comment.
I suspect most charging would be in the 10-60W range, likely hitting the happiest part of the efficiency curve of switch mode regulation.
Assuming 92%-94% efficient then yes, you'll see 0.87 to 5.2 watts needing to be dissipated at worst, which is actually still a bit warm on the higher side of things.
Having it rated at 100W is fine, using it consistently at 100W might not be wise, same argument as it not being wise to run a PC powersupply redlined all the time.
