  • How do NVMe fare without heatsinks? My mobo didn't come with one.

In my case (Lian Li Lancool II mesh (with 3 additional fans) sits around 29 degrees. I don't think it matters heaps unless you are constantly reading/writing.

    • yup. you nailed it.
they do get hot, nvme drives

thanks for reminder, almost pulled the trigger

      • +1

        29 isnt that hot…

        • +1

          i call bullshit on 29

          its probably not nvme

          • @Nilfunds: I have this exact nvme drive lol…

              @ColdFusion: lol
              dont take it so personal.

nobody cares about your idle temps

ive got a samsung pro nvme

anyway. just put overheating nvme into google. its like common knowledge

why do you think nvme drives throttle? for fun?

              • @Nilfunds: strange even under a crystal disk mark test 41 was the max. I do know some overheat depends on the case. Mine gets lots of fresh cooler air so i think it would depend on the location and airflow.

                • @ColdFusion: why do you think nvme drives throttle? for fun?
or to allow people to buy cheap cases :)

                  • @Nilfunds: when i got my samsung pro nvme i had to put a fan in just for it. i dont remember exactly, it was like 50-55C or something while idel. z490 mobo/10700k
full tower case, all noctua fans.

but in the end got a heatsnik cuz it looked fugly.
heatsink like 20$ posted on Amazon , thermalright something. not as effective as fan but almost.

Is this better than the samsung 970 evo plus? also 500gb ofc

    • I have the Samsung 970 evo plus, apparently the evo plus is faster by a tad bit and the quality is better.
I got it for 115 couple months ago.

this is a good deal if you're budgeting

  • Would this work well inside a Thunderbird 3 enclosure and if so which one ?

I'd like to run Windows via Bootcamp on it.

  • Guys I have PCIE2.0x16 slot. Would this work on a sandy bridge mobo?

So far my research says old mobos don't have an nvme module. And that certain samsung Nvme drives have legacy drivers that allow compatibility…

    • what motherboard?

        • +1

you do not have a nvme m.2 slot on your mobo. Even if you adapted one of your pcie lanes to an m.2 pcie slot will not be able to boot from it either since it wont be supported on in the bios. It's probably not worth the trouble. Sata seems your only option for boot.
