      DVD region hack
      http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/philips-bdp3200/11432

Other info in previous post http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54873

Any info on region selection for BluRay?

    • How fast does the remote respond? I ask as I don't have much experience with blu-ray players, only the one my sister had. It was a Samsung, and when you pressed a button on the remote it would take a few seconds for the player to respond - very definitely not immediate.

      • the remote is not that great and requires heavy pressing of buttons, just set up my Logitech remote and it works alot better.

  • I'll take it! Cheap way to get the rest of the family into a blu-ray/dvd/avi/mkv playing device.

    • How do you get it to play avi/mkvs etc?

      • My 2000 series Philips Bluray player can take a multi-partitioned NTFS external and play MOST files, including MKVs.

It does pass on a few files though, and some sound formats.

  • Could someone please peek inside? Does this have a standard SATA drive (like the Allure did) that can be used in a PC?

    • Huh? It's not a PVR, its a blu-ray player.

      • The bluray drive is what is meant. Some players use 5.25" like what was mentioned.

Bluray writers are sub $100 anyway.

        • Bluray writers are sub $100 anyway.

But the one in the player is likely quiet. PC drives tend to be made fast and noisy, don't they?
And with the drive out, you still have a 1080p media player.

        • @manic
By the tapered shape of the player, I doubt it's PC standard size.

        • steptoe, the one I saw before was smaller than 1/2-height, but had mounting holes in the correct place for a standard bay. It had a standard SATA data connector, but a different power connector, which was no problem.

        • exactly. These are only readers. For the same price or cheaper get a bd-rom with dvd writer.

      • Ah OK fair enough!

  • Wow. BR Players are officially cheap! Just a matter of time till I jump onboard and buy one but I CBF upgrading my existing DVD movie collection.

    • +2

With a lot of BR players upscaling these days, you'll get new life out of your DVD collection.

      • Hmmm, good point, it could complement our new 1080p TV. It also has USB media and youtube which makes it very compelling to buy.

    • I still have not made the jump to bluray. Maybe when I get a full hd 64" tv. So I can at least notice the difference

      • +1

Get a cheap player now and don't by DVD anymore.

  • oh no…I got ripped even though is a different brand!!!..

I bought the panasonic DMP-BD75GN-K for $99 bucks the day before xmas…..should have waited, but again it was a gift for someone else…argh!!!

    • I bought a Toshiba one from HN for $88 a week back. Didn't think prices would go down any lower. Ha!

  • +1

Thanks. Ordered one to be picked up at my local store but somehow I am anticipating they will run out of stock..

  • The optional wifi adapter (wub1110) appears to be equal in price to the player itself, if not even more expensive. :(

That's if you can find it. I've only so far spotted it in the UK for GBP40+deliv.

I picked one of these up for $99 a few months back. An excellent player. Very responsive, far better than the Soniq $99 one from earlier in the year. Plays ALMOST everything i've tried (seems it doesn't like playing a few mkvs which none of my players would play). The Youtube element is a bit of a gimmick as I find it's far too slow to be of any use. My only issue is with the eject button on the remote as it doubles as the stop button.

  • Question: what's the different between blue-ray and blue-ray 3d player?
If i dont have a 3d TV does the blue-ray 3D player display the image in 3D or it just "play" blue-ray 3D? I havent seen any blue-ray 3D disc out there ?

By the way: it's 20% off all Philip branch, i went to the store today. the offer expire in 2 Jan 2012.

    • +1

A standard tv will display a blu-ray or blu-ray 3d movie, but not in 3d.

      Only a 3d capable blu-ray player can play a 3d blu-ray movie.

To view in 3d, one must have a 3d tv AND a 3d capable blu-ray player.

Blu-ray 3d discs/movies are available just not common. For example, DSE only sell at most 3-4 3d blu-ray movies to my knowledge.

      • Cheer champ.

  • Has anyone managed to find a review? Does it do multi-region blu-rays? at this price it's almost worth buying just to test it out

    • +4

seriously dude, check out the previous posts above yours

    • I used to ask question like you, untill i took an arrow to the knee…

I picked up the Toshiba with Blu Ray region switching which works perfect. Picked it up from HN for $85 (originally $88 but asked for a discount in true Oz Bargain style!

  • Just order it, i got 1.75% off from starthere + 5% staff member. Now that's is a blue-ray player under $60 !!!!

  • Ok…so I received an invoice for the purchase (I bought online for the free delivery, let's hope it's not second-hand…) but the invoice only states that I've gotten Everyday Rewards points - no mention of the player at all. Anyone else get this?

    • they will invoice the goods when it has been ready for collection. I went through the same thing with my plasma tv a few weeks ago.. give it another 2 days and you should receive confirmation and an invoice.

      • ah cheers :-). I checked on the Dick Smith website and the order stats is 'being amended', maybe they stuffed up? Hopefully I'll still get the player.

        • Just allow 10 working days from date of purchase to receiving this. should be no longer. i almost bought one of these myself but then realized just because its cheap does not mean i need it.

  • Does this one come with any component cables or anything?

  • Just bought one as well :) Hoping I can change the region for Blu-rays because I generally buy movies from Amazon but only a handful are locked to Region A.

  • How is this unit still available on the website? If it is such a good deal i would have thought it'd have sold out by now.

  • Is it possible to disable audio on hdmi?

    • +1

Yeah. Press the mute button on your remote control.

What's the difference between this and the other model bLu Ray and a 3D Blu Ray? Is 3D just for 3D TV's??

    • Yes, if you want to watch your 3D Blu-Ray movies on your 3D TV, then you need a 3D Blu-Ray player. This Philips player does not support 3D, there is another higher (and more expensive) Philips player I saw in Dick Smith that can handle 3D and it costs around $113.

  • Picked this up today and it seems like a great device. Major downside is that it doesn't seem to play MKV files.

    • It says it does play MKV files in the manual. I haven't had a chance to try it though.

      • edit: updated the firmware and it works very well.

  • i remember buying this when they had it on special for $98.
the player is good but having the eject button as the stop button also is annoying.
for the wireless usb you can only use the one they say and it is really expensive. i used my wireless router through the ethernet port of the bluray player. i had the idea that doing this would allow me to stream from computer but all the network for this does is youtube and the bluray plus (have not tried the bluray plus for any of my blurays, is it really worth it).
i have found that this will play through usb mp4s that my wdtv wont play. cant remember if i have played any mkvs though.

  • Awesome sauce, just got this from my local DSE (they seem to have plenty available at the moment). The YouTube feature is practically useless (quite laggy and slow to switch even on my 2 MB/s connection) but the player seem to play most formats and even those .mkv files that wouldn't play on my WDTV. A great player for that price.

  • Cheapest 'Branded' Blu Ray player on the market atm… Good find and still available online.

  • Thanks, I just picked up one at DSE Greensborough (VIC) this afternoon and they still have 5 in stock.

  • great find, picked one on 27th, cheaper than JB's Soniq, why not.
upgraded firmware to 1.67, no idea about difference, but upgraded anyway.

    • +1

      Supposedly:
      System Software Version: 1.67
      *Enhance mkv file playability.

  • Just got one from Runaway Bay… box had been opened before but contents look mostly new… manual bag has been opened… but not scratches on the unit (or DVDs in it either) … used to work for a similar type company in the UK and we often reboxed things, have to say I did a much better job of making things look new again though :)

  • Just picked one up thanks to this post. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks for telling us cyclone, good deal!

  • argggh missed out on free shippin….oh hell no im not drivin to the shops in 39c

  • I just go and grab one for me. No HDMI cable in the box. A stack of the players available at Dick Smith (Bourke Street Mall), Melbourne CBD.

  • Guys, how does this compare to Philips dedicated media player?
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GM1000/philips-hd-media-play…

Would it play the same things as the media player can? I bought this because I needed both a bluray/media player, so just wondering how far the media player capabilities on this one go…

  • its advertised as $79 now, i suppose this deal has expired

    • Thanks for letting me know that it has expired.

    • Yup. Dick Smith Online was also nice enough to tell me only AFTER I emailed them that they had no stock and would I like a refund? I ordered it on the 26th of December, and only now they tell me.

Was able to get a regular Dick Smith to sell it to me at the advertised price though.

  • I also get refunded but I have to chase them up. I rang them and they said no stock and refund. Wondering if situation like this can be brought to ACCC attention. Sounds like a stunt to me. How many of you guys received the item btw?

    • me…. I got two….. although I did 'click and pick up'

      • yeah this is a problem with Dick Smith Online, not the stores. Moral of the story - don't ever order from Dick Smith Online

    • Oh, print out your receipt from Dick Smith Online, and see if a regular store will match it even though the promotion has ended. That's how I got mine.

    • Contact the ACCC about it.. they need more than one complaint to take any action.
You are entitled to your order.

  • Anyone tried making it region free yet?

I was able to make it region free, HOWEVER, all the dvd from other region would play back in black and white, and the pictures have some wavy lines across it. Anyone else have the same issue?

    • I've made both my player and the one Dad bought region free, and they play all DVD's and Blu-rays without any issues.

      • hmmm, just my luck. looks like I need to exchange for new one?

anyone else have the same issue?

  • I Also had my order refunded to me without notice.
And it was 2 WEEKS later after my order when I found this out.
Thankfully I paid via paypal and as soon as I made a complaint and started a paypal dispute it was shipped out immediately!

    This is wrong DSE.
It shouldn't take a customer calling you on your bullshit to fix something that is illegal.

Not to mention the issue has been logged with the ACCC now which will build a case if this should happen again to others, so always complain to the ACCC if things like this happens.

  • In the event anyone reads this, I called DSE a few days ago (last day of January) and spoke to the customer service rep asking for an update to my order (as it has been a month that it has been stuck in 'Amending Order' status… After a few moments waiting I am informed my order has become a 'NO SALE' and that there were 4 players in the warehouse but all were defective.. I was then offered a Sony BDPS380 (normally $99) for the same price of $63.20 which I thought was a good deal so accepted the offer.

Having played with it now for a little while, its not too bad, menu is nicer than the philips, and the info screen is more detailed. Can eject the disc tray pretty much the moment you switch it on unlike other players that take a while to load up before you can eject the disc…

For what I paid I'm pretty happy. Have not tried the movie streaming feature that the player features may have give it a shot later on when I have the time to play with it.

    • My order is at the same status and I am currently trying to negotiate with DSE to supply the BDPS380 for the same price. Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard if you have already got the same deal.
