Thinking of Getting a Realme 7 5G or X3. Anyone Got One and Can Review??

TLDR: wanted feedback on a Realme 7 5g but got a X3 Superzoom instead - because:reasons

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/realme-x3-superzoom-256gb…
Saw some major retailers are now selling the Realme 7 5G for $499 with bonus wireless buds via redemption: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/realme-7-5g-128gb-mist-bl…

Has anyone picked one up and willing to offer their review or experience?

I have a 3+ year old iPhone 8 that is starting to fail……looking at a replacement and this seems to get positive reviews for the price point / performance: https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/realme-7-5g

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/82c…

I personally don’t need flagship performance, something that will do internet, apps, email and occasional Netflix or Disney etc with android auto for car rides etc is fine. The iPhones done it’s service and I don’t want to spend $999 for a Samsung 5G phone. But any other options at the price point of $500 would be good to look at.

  • In what way is your iphone 8 'starting to fail'?
what is the battery health of it?

    • Battery life health is actually reasonable at 85%
It’s the camera and torch. Rear camera stopped working in the last week, front camera will only do video and no stills. Torch won’t turn on, so I’m guessing something has gone wrong.
Googled it & tried the suggestions eg turning voice over assistant on then off, reset, OS update but no dice.
No other noticeable issues but I suppose I could make a genius appointment to see what’s wrong or just move on to a new phone and make this the kids Netflix device.

Is your reply intended to suggest its ridiculous that anything could go wrong with an iphone or Apple product? They age and have issues just like any other brand. From personal experience:

Daughter's old iphone 6 stopped getting wifi reception after a couple of years.
Son's ipad air became unuseable while still under warranty due to some sort of weird software issue. Kept restarting. Apple wouldn't touch it because of a tiny crack in the screen which had absolutely nothing to do with the issue we had.
Son's macbook air packed up, screen intermittently goes blank and keyboard no longer works (had it for maybe 2 and a half years).
Wife's iphone 11 had to have the camera replaced within one year.

Once phones are 3 years old there's likely to be some sort of performance issues, goes just as much for Apple as any other brand.

Yeah there appears to be this preconception that Apple products age better. They certainly keep their resale value better than other brands, but they start playing up just as much performance-wise. From personal experience:

        • iPad:

          • started slowing down to ridiculous low speeds after an OS update. We now know Apple did this on purpose ('to spare battery power'), back then this was unknown and denied.
            • Same iPad could not install some modern apps due to OS no longer upgradable. This was after 4 years or so.

        • Macbook: Started refusing some newer software due to its age (Bootcamp for example). At the same time I was still using a 12-year old Windows PC running Windows 10.

        • iPhone:
          - Speaker dimmed and numb after 2 years of normal use, no drops.
          - Home button no longer working.

        • Even resale isn't that great after the first year or so. Iphone X 256GB launched at around $1,850, bought a refurb recently for my son (excellent condition) for under $500.

Struggled to get more than $200 for my daughter's old iphone 8 which I think was about $1k when launched. Around the same time sold my old Huawei of a similar age for $150 (that I bought new for $400).

  • why not an apple iphone SE 2020, if too expensive refurb?

    • My line of thinking is that I need to get 2 - 3 years out of the next phone and whilst my current plan is 4g I imagine 5g will be more widely accessible by Jan 2022.
Not sure if the SEs are 5g capable?
It’s not a deal breaker I suppose, as most my network usage is accessing podcasts/audio books or music streaming in the car…..so not exactly watching HD movies via network etc.
I wouldn’t want to go for a refurb or used phone out of personal preference for new with warranty etc, though I imagine dealing with Realme would be perhaps less ideal than dealing with Apple, though I never have had to either!
It seems if I want that network option and don’t want to spend more than $500 then Realme, Oppo or other android are the most common option.

  • I am about to buy this phone for the Mrs
    Have you bought it yet?

    I am currently using a Xiaomi 10t Lite 5G
    Which is comparable to this.

    • Did you buy it? I got the X3 Superzoom

  • I have not made any change yet. I basically have done an assessment of it, the Oppo Reno 4 5g and Samsung a42 5g. At this point I am monitoring the prices and if the Samsung comes down by $50 or more I’ll get that, otherwise it would be between the Oppo and Realme, though the Oppo, even on sale, will be about $150 more than the other, though the Oppo Reno 4 Z 5g (not confusing at all) is closer in price.

If you do get it, please drop your thoughts here!

    Edit: less spelling

    • So after a couple weeks of using the Realme 7 5G, can't fault it.

It's also easier to hold than my Xiaomi mi 10t lite 5g.
And the position of the punch hole front camera is better too (bottom left corner).

So yeah definitely worth it at (just under) $500

      • That's good news, I struggled to find any people with experience with the 7 5G in Australia since release.
Do you have a 5G plan? I saw some concerning feedback about battery life when on that network, but it was a single reviewer so anything could explain that.
I wound up getting the X3 as I decided I did not need 5G functionality nor will I for another contract period so the specs of the X3 were pretty persuasive with processor, RAM and memory size etc.

        • Yeah I have a Telstra 5G modem with Sim. So I'll grab the Sim outta that and test it for you soon, as I also saw that 1 review :D

  • In the event someone is weighing up a Realme: I would up buying a Realme X3 Superzoom and not the 7 5G.
Decided I didn't need a 5g capable phone and managed to get the X3 from JB for $599.
Super happy with it after 3 days. I migrated from an iPhone 8 so had to adjust from iOS to Android and the Play store etc.
Once I got my bearings it has proved quite impressive.
The processor is very fast and the storage is great @ 256 GB. I picked the X3 as it's also got 12 GB ram & a decent Snapdragon processor so is less likely to suffer slow down issues after 12-18 months like some of the other phones I was priced towards eg Realme 7, Samsung a42.
Haven't really used the camera so can't remember review the 64 MP attributes but happy so far.

Had the phone for a little while and overall it's been a solid performer. The camera is quite impressive, though not on the same level as flagships etc.
Definitely is a Bluetooth and wired connection drop out issue. When connected to car infotainment for instance it WILL drop out, usually in the first 10-15 minutes. Reconnect is fine and then it does not seem to do it again.
Had an issue where the phone was not accessing mobile data, but this was resolved after manually entering the Access Point data for my carrier off their website. Apparently the Realme phones can have issue with auto detect on some carriers.

  • "selling the Realme 7 5G for $499 with bonus wireless buds via redemption:"

Mine, from JB Hi-FI, had the buds shrink-wrapped with the phone. For those who do prefer the 5G capability, the battery life was merely good [ about two days between charges in normal use including ~ 2 hour bluetooth music per day], increasing to brilliant if I bother to turn it off when not in use. I'm not, however using wi-fi as I have a ton of Kogan/Telstra pre-paid data to use up before I play musical SIMs to gain some port-in discounts.

The fingerprint sensor was quick and easy to set up, however being side-button rather than screen based is occluded with a decent wallet case on - although the included clear case was quite fit for purpose. Face unlock works really well - almost too well as it's almost impossible to pick the phone up or take it out of my pocket without unlocking it.

I'm able to emulate one of the more attractive features of the LG phones before their design department overdosed on the Kool-Aid, double tap to lock and unlock the screen, although it is not as well implemented as LG managed. The screen, while not OLED, is bright enough except in bright direct sunlight, and the colours natural [think BBC/ABC TV productions, National Panasonic TVs] rather the the NTSC-like [think U.S studio/7/9/10 TV production, Bauer/Polaroid TVs] cartoon colours Samsung fans rave over.

One that puzzled me at first was OTG - you need to visit <settings> <additional settings>[scroll down] <OTG connection> "Automatically turn off when not in use for ten minutes" and toggle the switch. The really annoying thing is that there seems no way of adding the toggle to the quick access notification bar!

I ended up getting the 5G modem anyway, as it dropped in price quite dramatically shortly after - I'd asked about the X3 but that model hadn't arrived , although it was the model I had been hunting. You'll already be familiar with the speed and capability of the fingerprint sensor - it looks like they are pretty much identical apart from the brilliant camera, however it would merely duplicate a Canon SX50 for me and in no way replace my Nikkor 105mm F2.8 AIS Prime, but looks like a lot of fun.

  • Can confirm since UI 2 update a few weeks ago that the Bluetooth drop outs have been fixed. It no longer drops connection via physical android auto or Bluetooth to speakers or headphones etc. Happy with that!
