This phone is great in everyway except battery life

    • with the abundance of power banks and in-car chargers nowadays, I don't find this to be a big problem.

Have a Pixel 3 as my daily driver, hasn't missed a beat since Day 1 (✧ω✧)

      • +6

Every time I hear daily driver I cringe (due to Youtubers overusing it) lmao

        • +4

Nah it's fine, see I use a Pixel as a daily driver (boring) , but on the weekends I just wanna have some fun and show off so I switch to an iPhone (whizbang)

          • +1

@crentist: I'm truly surprised you're calling a Pixel boring and an iPhone fun… iPhones are known to be easy and straight forward to use, Android devices are so customizable, they definitely aren't boring

              • +1

@Zorlin: Aren't you a sad human-being. Firstly, you obviously didn't even read my comment properly. And secondly, after using iOS for 7 years, I switched to Android for the past 3 years, so I know what I'm talking about when I wrote that comment

                • -4

                  @Zackeroo:

so I know what I'm talking about when I wrote that comment

Not really. I was making a crap joke about how daily driver phones are a dumb concept by pretending any phone can be particularly boring or interesting, which whooshed over your head.

            • -1

@Zackeroo: Pixel phones aren't overly customisable though. Samsungs sure, pixels no.

Source: own a pixel 3, can basically change the wallpaper and that's it.

              • +1

@MrFunSocks: Yea nah, that's just what you've been willing to do. Your phone can do so much more than you think

Source: I've modded 8-year-old budget tablets + I own a OnePlus (Which is known to run software which is extremely similar to what Pixels run)

                • @Zackeroo: You can "mod" a samsung phone 100x more than you can a pixel though. If you want customisation you don't buy the least customisable android phone on the market.

Try changing the AOD on a Pixel for example. Try adding an extra nav button to the 3 button nav menu. Try removing the wifi icon from the task bar. Good luck.

                  • +1

@MrFunSocks: Should we just end this argument lol. Or we could just continue our 'discussion' hahaha. I'm happy to continue, but we could make even turn this into a semi-friendly conversation lol.

Ok so to refer to your comment, you said you "can basically change the wallpaper and that's it". That's the statement I'm trying to prove wrong here. A simple look at XDA will provide you with a world of possibilities for your phone… That is, if you're willing to seriously customize your phone.

          • +1

            @crentist: Are you being serious?

            • @cjhero: Are you being vague?

I got a few down votes and android vs iPhone replies to what should be a dumb and obvious joke that has nothing to do with that pointless debate, so apparently a few people read a bit too much into it.

              • @crentist: I found the joke funny. I don't really get how it spawned a debate but i guess people just love arguing over the internet,

          • @crentist: Imagine actually being impressed by someone using an iPhone.

      • Personally prefer not to carry a power bank or car around in my pocket.

    • I bought this for my dad in the last deal and it's a pretty good phone but I would say the biggest problem is the ringtone volume (especially for him). Media plays very loud because it uses both speakers on the phone, but the ringtone and notifications only use 1 speaker and it is ridiculously quiet. There are complaints from others online about this, but Google claims it's working as intended. I don't know why they can't just make an option to use both speakers or if it's possible to make the single speaker louder for that.

      • Just choose a loud ringtone. It's fine. He will get used to it.

        • I downloaded some loud ringtones, and playing them in media apps they are plenty loud enough… But then setting it as the ringtone the volume is cut by more than half… It's definitely not fine because he's a truck driver and no chance you can hear it over a truck. It's an oversight from Google.

          Edit:

Just a few links of others that don't find the ringtone volume sufficient either. If you search "pixel 3 ringtone too quiet" you will find many more.

          https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/5597267?hl=en

          https://amp.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9qjaze/pixel_3…

For anyone hard of hearing or working in slightly noisy environments it is definitely not loud enough.

      • +2

I bought my parents a Xiaomi Mi Band each to act as a ringtone basically, and it's been fantastic. They don't carry their phone around on their body the whole time, especially when at home, and they often just miss phone calls even if I call them 10x in a row and I know they're there and have their phone. Now they get notified on their wrist and only have to charge it once a month.

Maybe have a look at doing the same for your dad.

        • +1

That's actually a great idea. I'll mention it to him tonight and see if he wouldn't mind wearing one… Thanks for the suggestion.

    • except the amount of vibration caused by internal speakers…

  • wait until Clubhouse has an Android version…

  • +1

good phone, still my primary phone. Works great and at this price, it's a steal.

    • +2

Ram Memory Installed Size 4 GB
      Memory Storage Capacity 64 GB

Seems spot on price wise. With less than 10 months of updates left too.

      • +2

With less than 10 months of updates left too.

These phones are very popular with hackers so I'm sure you'll get unofficial support for ages

        • -7

Hackers? You mean people who flash custom roms on phones to try and extend the life of old phones?

Either way, something critical to be aware of for non-"hackers"

          • +3

@onlinepred: Modders? Tinkerers? Either way that's pretty pedantic.

            • +2

@Merlict: It's just the hackers would have to write hardware drivers, which is pretty full on. The ROMS you get from XDA etc do not offer certain driver updates, only software. So for example, if there was a vulnerability with a driver on the Pixel 3, it in general would not get patched through ROMS. It's the issue that you get with QUALCOMM androids.

              • +9

@onlinepred: Most people use 'hacker' incorrectly. To the general public it seems the understanding of hacker is using IT to do something you aren't meant to do.

                • @dmac:

To the general public it seems the understanding of hacker is using IT to do something you aren't meant to do.

The truth in this sentence is unreal… :)

              • @onlinepred: Almost every other SoC has this issue but worse…

                • @Zorlin: No, Apple support their SOC for 5 years. Either way that's irrelevant, this one will not be supported after November this year

  • Random pictures of some rainbow Huawei phone

    Yeah OK Amazon

    • I can see a lawsuit coming XD

I will definitely lodge a customer support enquiry about nit getting the $200 gift card mentioned on one of the pictures

      • you can try but fyi offer expired on 12/5/19

  • +4

Tempting but still waiting for a pixel 5 deal to come along

  • Thanks OP! Was thinking I should have bought during the last deal.

  • +1

Don’t forget 4% cash back from Cashrewards

  • +1

looks like price just went up to $380+

  • Price jack to 381

  • +2

The photos from this phone never fail to impress me.

  • +3

I'll bump this thread if it goes back down to $357. Those who are interested can subscribe.

  • I've recently dropped my NOTE20 ultra and the screen needs to be replaced… buying this phone would be cheaper than replacing the screen from samsung…I'm tempted to just buy this instead.

    • +2

Just be aware that going from Note20 Ultra 6.9" screen size to Pixel 3 5.5" screen size is a huge drop.

    • If you bought your phone with a credit card, check if your credit card provides with any product insurance or benefits. For example my Amex card allows me to a free screen repair if I bought my phone with it or if it pay my mobile plan with it.

    • You should buy another Samsung and get Care+

    • This phone is much worse than a Note20 though, so there's that….

  • This phone is amazing

  • +2

I just replaced my Pixel 3 with a Samsung S20 FE 5G. The Pixel 3 was amazing and the stock android feel was slick and very google. The downside however was the Pixel 3 had woeful battery life (it won't get through a full day with fairly standard usage) and I found the bluetooth dropped out often when outside walking/running which made bluetooth headphones pretty unusable. Pixel 3 support also ends later this year so you will only get several months of life before security patches stop. I only just got my S20 FE 5G so its too soon to compare yet.

  • -6

Would have been tempting but you look old if you don't have a 6.5" phone.

    • +10

Protip, literally nobody notices or cares what phone you have.

  • -1

    Get a Poco X3 NFC or a Pixel 4a, 4a 5g or Pixel 5.

Any of them are a MUCH better and longer lasting deal.

    • +1

But double the price (4a 5G - $650 when on sale).

  • Shockingly bad battery life, would not recommend.

I could only put up with mine for 3 months before moving to another phone. Really the only good thing about Pixels is their camera, and the camera isn't even top 3 anymore. If you have to have a pixel, get a 4a or 4a 5G if you want a big phone. Much better deals than the Pixel 5 for same performance.

    • yep i couldn't stand it after just one month.
      It's a severely over-rated phone.

  • received mine on Friday, just before VIC snap lockdown

it's an amazing phone. upgraded to Android 11 first thing, installed all latest system updates, did a full reset, then set it all up.
fits my smaller hands perfectly. amazing screen. great camera. no complains about performance, everything is very snappy.

just like with any OLED device, the darker the picture, the less power consumption. enabled dark theme and no complains about battery life so far.

will see how it goes. so far I am definitely happy I returned Oppo A52 and purchased this for a bit more.

  • Back in stock @ $378.75

  • It's back to $359.81 but it probably won't last very long, it appears to slowly drop in price bit by bit until a few people buy them, then it goes back up.

if someone is looking for a good case, Moment cases are discounted for pixel 3, got 2 delivered for $56, they are very high quality, and white one looks outstanding on this white unit.

NB: if you order one, they will charge you $$$ for delivery, but order 2 and delivery is free. got a white and black one

    • There are better cases at cheaper price. This moment case is only good for people who wanna use their extra lenses for photos.

      • not really, it's a solid and protective stylish case, lens is really optional.

what options do you think are a good alternative? I checked everywhere, and apart from some dull crap on eBay I haven't seen anything worth attention

        • Well, actually, it’s personal preference. Harvey Norman is selling Tech21 for $9 (+shipping). Also check out Spigen/Ringke. Btw, I’m not the one neg you.

          • @hawkeye93: yes I checked the spigen, also speck OtterBox and other options but didn't see anything nice

HN never came up on Google search will give them a go

            I don't give a damn about negs

            • @shabaka: Speck presidio grip is on Amazon but shipped from Amz US. $20 inc shipping.

              • @hawkeye93: thank you for your help mate

I will check out Moment cases since they should be delivered tomorrow. they come on FedEx priority, so should be quicker than ordering from oz

          • @hawkeye93: tech21 on HN is for 3 XL isn't it? I can only see one crappy folio case for 3. maybe everything good is already sold out

checked tech21 site directly there's only condom style clear case and something futuristic $18 each. the rest are $60 apiece

keep getting negged haha didn't know people were so religious about phone cases of all things

  • Available again with price drop $347.62

  • My 17 month old Pixel 3 died couple of weeks ago…..wouldn't powerup or charge out of the blue.

Google happily sent a replacement, only some basic questions asked
    - is there any physical damage to phone
    - did you drop in water
    - did you try using original charger and factory reset

Called on Saturday and replacement phone was there on Tuesday……logged in with my id and all my data was there except for passwords & authenticators. I was up and running within 30 mins of receiving replacement.

  • 391.55 for me when added to the cart, wtf

  • Good phone but be prepared to charge it any chance you get

  • Down to $353.51

  • Down to $337.02, probably will revert after a few purchases

  • Man, even the cheapo A20 is getting 4 years of security updates. So another two years left compared to this 6 month.

  • Back at $345.11

    • $342.27

      • The price for this phone is jumping all over the place!

        • I think it slowly drops in time when people stop buying it, then price shoots up again when some people purchase it.

      • $336.58

  • I'm not familiar with the Android ecosystem but am keen to get on board.
Are there any phones at this price point that would be guaranteed updates after October 2021?

    • Nokia 5.3 $219

      Updates

There's also Nokia 6.2 and 7.2 but they are a bit older and perhaps not as reliable/well received.

Security updates guaranteed up until Jun-23. Nokia has Android One with guaranteed updates, or Samsung are pretty good with updates despite not being on Android One.

However the Nokia 5.3 will only get one more operating system update, to Android 12, which is the same as the Google Pixel 3 will get, despite being an older phone. You are just getting longer (guaranteed) security updates with the Nokia 5.3 phone, however Google will probably still push out important security updates after Oct 2021.

      • Thank you. Is this still a good buy despite the lack of future updates or is the Nokia the way to go?

        • It depends what you want.

The Pixel 3 is a smaller phone, 5.5". Nokia 5.3 is larger phone, 6.5". I would find 5.5" too small myself, but it depends on what you like and what you are coming from.

However the Pixel 3 has a faster processor, it was released as a flagship phone, while the Nokia was released as a midrange phone. Pixel 3 was $1199 on release 2 and a bit years ago, while the Nokia 5.3 RRP is only $329, released about 10 months ago. The pixel also has a much better camera, generally regarded as the best camera on Android phones.

On the downside, Pixel 3 isn't great for battery, mentioned earlier. You'll get better battery on the Nokia, it's bigger and the processor is less battery hungry, despite the bigger screen. If you are okay with the battery and a smaller phone, you will get a great phone with a great camera and still get Android 12 update when it comes out.

Ultimately you will end up on Android 12 no matter which phone you get and you'll get Android 12 quicker on Google than a Nokia phone as they get OS updates first, it's just you'll get security patches for longer on the Nokia.

          • @hamza23: If you are happy to spend a little more and want something a little bigger, then new Google Pixel 4a 5g is a great value phone at $599 down from $799 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/608336

It's a good size at 6.2", no issues with battery life at all, more RAM and you've got years of updates on it as it was only released the end of last year, so you'll be good to at least the end of 2023.

Don't mix up the Google Pixel 4a and Google Pixel 4a 5g though, they are different phones, the difference isn't just 5g. The pixel 4a 5g is bigger, faster processor, better camera etc.

        • Nokia is part of the Android One program, it will get two major OS updates and 3 years of security updates from the initial release date. Problem is that they are buggy as hell. Might be better with the newer devices, but just be aware.

Samsung just announced that all phones will get at least 4 years of security updates, unknown number of OS updates, but probably at least one for the low end, and two plus for the higher ends. The OS are bloated but far more polished than Nokia.

  • $333 today.
How much better 4a5G camera is compare with Pixel 3?

    • Dropped again to $329.64

    • It's basically the same main camera sensor, except the 4a 5g / 5 has an ultrawide lens that the pixel 3 didn't have. This allows you to take photos at x0.6 zoom.
