WhatsApp Messenger Now FREE, Usually 99c! [iPhone-ONLY App, Australian iTunes]

1080

This app needs no introduction - it's been in the Top 25 Paid for months on end, and has become the leading replacement for SMS. If you don't have iOS 5 (and thus iMessage), then this app is definitely a must.

PLEASE NOTE: this app is only compatible with iPhone. It will not work on iPod touch or iPad unless you attempt this non-jailbreak hack (I haven't tried it myself).

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform smartphone messenger currently available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones. The application utilizes push notifications to instantly get messages from friends, colleagues and family. Switch from SMS to exchange messages, pictures, audio notes and video messages with WhatsApp users at no cost. All features are included without the need for extra in-application purchases.

WHY USE WHATSAPP VS. OTHER SOLUTIONS:

  • NO HIDDEN COST: Once you and your friends download the application, you can use it to chat as much as you want. Send a million messages a day to your friends for free! WhatsApp uses your Internet connection: 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi when available.

  • MULTIMEDIA: Send Video, Images, and Voice notes to your friends and contacts.

  • GROUP CHAT: Enjoy group conversations with your contacts.

  • NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES: Just like there is no added cost to send an international email, there is no cost to send WhatsApp messages internationally. Chat with your friends all over the world as long as they have WhatsApp Messenger installed and avoid those pesky international SMS costs.

  • SAY NO TO PINS AND USERNAMES: Why even bother having to remember yet another PIN or username? WhatsApp works with your phone number, just like SMS would, and integrates flawlessly with your existing phone address book.

  • NO NEED TO LOG IN/OUT: No more confusion about getting logged off from another computer or device. With push notifications WhatsApp is ALWAYS ON and ALWAYS CONNECTED.

  • NO NEED TO ADD BUDDIES: Your Address Book is used to automatically connect you with your contacts. Your contacts who already have WhatsApp Messenger will be automatically displayed under Favorites, similar to a buddy list. (You can of course always edit Favorites any way you like)

  • OFFLINE MESSAGES: Even if you miss your push notifications or turn off your iPhone, WhatsApp will save your messages offline until you retrieve them during the next application use.

  • STATUS: Use the status feature of WhatsApp to inform your contacts if you are busy, in a meeting, at the gym, or available for a chat.

  • AND MUCH MORE: Share location, Exchange contacts, Custom wallpaper, Custom notification sounds, Landscape mode, Precise message time stamps, Email chat history, Broadcast messages and MMS to many contacts at once and much much more!

  • Even if you have iOS5 this app is on Apple Android WP7 and Blackberry IIRC. Well worth the $0 cost :D for free (not counting data usage) messaging. Works internationally. and i just realised this is all in the post. lol so much for reading.

    • +3

Yeh true - if you've got friends on it, it's definitely worth it. For me personally, I bought it and found that only 3 of my contacts had it, so it didn't really do much for me. But when iOS 5 came out, I had nearly half my friends on iMessage straight away.

  • Best app!!! Get now while its free!!!

  • yup.. whatsapp is a heap good alternative to sms

  • i love this app, best thing is its multiplatform as well so you can msg your andriod and blackberry mates for free as well!

    • And Nokia! I've got a Nokia and chat to my girlfriend (who has an Android). Really handy for when she's in the USA.

  • kind of redundant with iMessage now… guess it's good if most of your friends use Android.

    • +5

Yeh it is - but there are still quite a few people running non-iOS 5 devices (original iPhone, iPhone 3G, first- and second-gen iPod touch).

    • +1

Not at all redundant - WhatsApp works with most phone OSes (Symbian/Nokia, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Android and iPhone). Android has a higher market share than iPhones, so more people can use WhatsApp.

  • +2

I'm switching from iPhone to WP7 and can go back to using whatsapp with my friends who had it before imessage came out.

    • Fair enough - everyone's needs are different :)

  • +2

Is this free for the 1st year only?

In Android Market, this is free for the 1st year and $2 per year after that.

    • +3

      What about Viber (http://www.viber.com/)
It appears to have the same features and costs nothing.

      • +2

WhatsApp has experienced the most widespread adoption, hence is the most likely network you'd find your friends on.

      • +1

Viber doesn't allow picture messages, but whatsapp doesn't do VOIP.

        • +5

Viber does picture messages, has for a couple of months now

    • No it's always free.

    • +1

My whatsapp account that I signed up via Android was supposed to be free until January 2012, but it recently got extended to July 2012 without any action on my part.

I have heard however that if you sign in to your account on an iOS device that it will extend your account for a couple of years.

  • +1

I had the same Q as above. Free forever?

    • +2

Yes it is free forever. iOS apps are generally never like that (free, then subscription-based).

Man .. this is old news.. posted while back in October

That was my post. Let's see if this one can exceed my 159 plus vote record. Not that it's a competition or anything.

      agreed. reported as duplicate..

whatever itsfree… i read last time that it was going to be forever free as a result of apple releasing iMessage and that it was virtually useless to iOS5 users… let me know when they've jacked the price up to 99 cents again and dropped it back to free. it was probably a mistake or whatever the site is you're using to track the price is reporting incorrectly.

        • i read last time that it was going to be forever free as a result of apple releasing iMessage

          Well, you're wrong, buddy.

the site is you're using to track the price is reporting incorrectly.

It's quite funny how you think you're more accurate than the most well-known App Store-tracking website in the world.

it was virtually useless to iOS5 users…

As I said elsewhere on here, many people still run non-iOS 5 compatible devices (original iPhone, iPhone 3G, first-gen iPod touch, second-gen iPod touch & various jailbroken users) so they don't have iMessage available to them. Not only that, but some people also have acquaintances who don't have iPhone, meaning WhatsApp is more useful to them.

If you had bothered to scan the comments on this post, you would've found all this out for yourself. Nevertheless, I'm happy to oblige your selective reading.

let me know when they've jacked the price up to 99 cents again and dropped it back to free.

Many people are happy with this deal post - if you're not, go troll elsewhere. Thanks.

Btw, if the mods are happy with a post, then it's stiff shit to anyone who has issues.

If you are using your phone internet connection (3g etc) and have roaming charges or go over your data limit there may be extra charges from your carrier.
I know when i was on 3 and roamed to telstra, any data was 30c meg.
The extra cost soon added up.

      Simple solution.

    awesome app and awesome deal!

    Cheers great deal free !

I've heard nothing but good things from this App. Never needed to use it tho, I have unlimited SMS/MMS :p

    • It's handy for group chats - i.e. when you try to organise a group gathering and sorting out the details with everyone.

    • I too have unlimited sms/mms/calls, but this app is a must imo. Send sms and pictures/videos almost instantly and no more guessing if the other person has recieved or not, it shows you with 2 ticks :)

  • Very useful app for those who have limited credit/messages. You can send multiple one-line messages instead of cramming as much text as you can into one message. However a week ago, it was noticeably laggy when it comes to uploading/downloading messages to/from the server, but the quality of service is back to normal now.

  • I paid for this one and had all my family overseas buy it as well. Its a good app for quick messages. Even though I use Viber mostly nowadays I recommend this one especially when it's free.

  • I don't get why it wont work for Ipad, bit of a joke…. can anyone enlighten me?

    • +3

It runs off a phone number.

      • +1

That makes sense, I thought it might have been email driven - cheers.

        • Jailbreak + Whatspad

      • Yes that's the reason why. However, as I mentioned in my post above, there is a way to tweak the app to work on non-iPhone devices, and it doesn't require a jailbreak.

    • It wont work with Ipad.

  • Can i use this for iPod Touch only?

    • Not officially, but you can try to get it working using the tweak outlined here (you don't need to jailbreak your device).

Be warned that WhatsApp does not encrypt your messages. When you're on wi-fi anyone on that same network could be reading your messages.

When travelling, this lack of encryption, couldpose serious issues for you (depending on what you say and where you are).

  • I would say go for LINE app. It's even better.

    • Lineapp? Doesn't exist…

  • Great if you are travelling overseas. Free sms back home using the free wifi hotels in the rest of the world have!!

  • Have been using this for ages. Love it (was my first bought app I believe).
Still use it despite imessage available-friendly to more devices being the biggest hook for me

  • Great App, just need to have friends that have it. Unfortunately I bought it day before yesterday for 0.99 cents!! Still worth it, but even more worth it now :)

  • Awesome app. I am on Android, and send around 100 messages a day on WhatsApp. The multi platform support is brilliant.

  • +1

I think they've dropped the price to counter the release of iMessage.. pretty all iPhone users will adopt iMessage.

The only downside is friends who have androids.. this is where Whatsapp

  • Whatsapp > iMessage

I think I have said this many times. Stop assuming everyone have iPhones!
