Their Dumplings is shit. The only one dumplings I couldn’t finish and had to throw out the whole bag. That says I’ve tried kb, Chen, and those from Asian supermarkets, no problem

Bought last months at full price and won't ever buy it again even for half price. The soup supposed to be tasting but unfortunately dominated by the pork fat smell. KB is ok but not sure they make soup dumplings?

I love these. Not sure why the hate, they taste pretty on point to real xiao long bao to me. Guess if you're expecting a normal dumpling you might be disappointed. These have to be steamed, not boiled and are more delicate/richer in flavour than non-soup dumplings because of the pork broth inside. Great with black vinegar to cut through the richness

    • black vin?

      • black vinegar is primarily an Asian condiment, kiiind of like balsamic vinegar but I wouldn't interchange the two. Usually what E/SE Asians dip dumplings into

I would say these are the "better" of the other ones currently out there in the western supermarkets atm. Best was the limited edition ones from Aldi (forgot the name) but they're gone now. Worst was the black truffle from Costco. Costco ones are out of shape so don't steam properly and never have soup.

These ones still give you a "bag" of soup if you get the steaming time right (this brand over steams very easy so it's no wonder people neg it).

But I only buy when it's on sale because for $7.50 you can get a bag from any Asian grocer.

Aldi ones were Urban Eats, yes, they were great!

  • There are a couple of local frozen dumpling/wonton brands that you can get at chinese/asian grocers. They blow most of the supermarket brands out of the water flavour-wise.

Any particular brand/manufacturers you'd recommend or avoid?

        My kids like this one.

        • Not just the kids like those ones.. My whole family does.. , my parents and my aunts

My wife is pretty fussy about dumplings..

These are the only xiao long bao, I have every bought more than once..

My freezer always has a couple of boxes are emergencies..

          • @Kelvin: I bought some other brand that they didn't like much. These are not my favourite, I prefer the dumplings the ones my wife make home.

            • +1

@jimojr: At least you wife can make them…

For those people reliant store bought dumplings.

The ones on your link are definitely worth trying..

… For (vietnamese) spring rolls.. these are the bee's knees..

        • Thank you, will look for these!

        • where made?

      • +1

The brand jimojr recommended below is pretty good for xiao long bao.

For normal boiled/steamed dumplings I used to always get the Hong Men Ju pork and chive ones. Packaging looks like this but I prefer the ones without prawns.

Lately I've moved to ABC Pastry brand dumplings. There are a few varieties in different coloured packaging.

For wontons I like the JinYuanbao brand, I just put them in chicken soup.

Thats all I can recall at the moment. But a few suggestions to check out in the freezer section of your local asian grocer.

        • Thanks, will check these out!

    • Which ones?

      • check out my reply above. Give them a try.. they crap all over the woollies brands

  • I find it is quite good compared to din tai fung. With 7.5, it is much greater than some "famous" Perth dumpling.

  • I'll try it, and compare. Real xiaolongbao comes from Shanghai. Others taste subpar

    • how did it go??

      • +1

I had the black truffle one from Costco today. Slightly authentic. There is some soup but the truffle oil overwhelms the otherwise bland meat. 7/10

  • Tried one and not bad at all.

  • Wow these were terrible. Never again.

    • Steam only and make sure not let the skin break. If not, they are terrible.
