PNY is not an unknown brand, it is very well established as a entry level cheapo memory maker.

    • Oops. Unknown by me. Even better value then.

    • They’re probably on par with Lexar.. give or take

high failure rate at around 1 year - buyer beware

    • +1

Hence why I said for non-critical storage.

        • +1

No not at all. Just assumed based on the price I wouldn't put critical data on it.

@boxall: cheap is not an indicator of quality.

@petry: Pretty sure it’s more applicable in the sense that:
Expensive items are not an indicator of quality.

    • why does it have a high failure rate?

    • Is this from personal experience or reviews?

      • +1

pny had 2 tiers of ssd's good and cheap.

The good had longevity. Newer drives using cheaper tech are more of the cheap variety, and continue to be very variable with a cross section of reviews noting high failure rates at around 12 months.

I stopped using pny when I couldn't get the good drives cheap anymore. Can't be bothered with the hassle, or messing people around. Life's 2 short.

        • +2

Fair enough. I’m risking it for $75. It does have 3 year warranty but I’m guessing they aren’t going to make it easy

Amazon reviews must all be wrong:

          https://www.amazon.com.au/PNY-Solid-State-Drive-960GB/dp/B07…

          7209 of them.

@boxall: Well, no. Lots of reviewers get the drive, install windows/whatever on it, and say "yep fast system 5 stars" and that's it, so a lot of the reviews aren't relevant to life of the drive.

There are a bunch of reviews dealing with exactly this 'short life' issue. I mean it's a cheap drive, but warning people that ensuring a good backup is in place quite quickly is sensible.

    • fail where it ends up in the bin or you simply just format and re download your steam library overnight?

    Insane value

Would make an excellent portable SSD with an enclosure.

  • Shows $145 at checkout?

Seems they have a few PNY SSD deals, both internal and external though it looks like the OP’s deal was the best value. 480GB for $39 is pretty good

      • +1

Wow that's a nice find as well. Assumed OP was a pricing error intended for the 480GB but if not these are pretty incredible

  • WOW! Wonder if it was a pricing error??? TIme will tell.

    I have this only…

We have verified your Order SO######## and started processing it.

      • Mine is close looking at their web site. Siting in "completed":

Website is awful. Trying to make an account and stuck in a validation loop.
