    Thank you!

Might hold out for the 12TB though as those seem better value if you can get it for $290

  • Nice! Thanks OP!

    => $28.67/TB (excl. shipping cost)

  • Seagate with exos x16 datacenter drive for usual price of $426. I dare say this is a better deal.

Not everyone wants the known noisy Exos drives. Yes they are good, but very loud.

      • How many dB we talking? driving and idling

        • +1

Go look up the Seagate technical specifications for them. They are simply known to be louder than WD Reds, and some people think they are louder than the HGST drives too. If these WD's are helium-fileld then they are generally quiet.

The biggest complaint I have seen is the 'clicking' noise that the Exos seem to generate.

You should also be aware that the Seagates have also been reported to contain Ironwolf Pros, but I think that seems to be at the 12gb & 14gb sizes based on comments I have read here and over on r/DataHoarder. I don't think I have ever seen 16gb Seagates Externals reported as Ironwolfs but it is very possible/likely.

          • @Monsta-AU: Thanks for the feedback.

I have pulled the trigger on a 12TB Expansion last week at $274 hoping to get an EXOS inside, but we will see. Wouldn't be unhappy with an Ironwolf Pro either.

I need a 16 next so I will definitely take that into consideration. I will look at the documentation.

            Thanks again

            • @TDLSU: EDIT: So I do not own any EXOS yet.. But according to the data sheets, they are a whole 10dB louder than WD. Coming in at 20-24dB idle and up to 34dB active (vs WD Red 24dB active and 22dB idle).

Basically double the noise volume (scaling) from my understanding, but still not even in usual active ranges of everyday life. Depends where you store them I guess.. I like white noise.

              • @TDLSU: Decibels is actually a logarithmic scale, and its a doubling of apparent volume for every ~3dB. See https://pulsarinstruments.com/en/post/understanding-decibels… if you need a citation.

10dB more is about 10x louder. So yes you will probably easily be able to distinguish the Exos activity against WD Reds activity. In fact, you will probably be very unlikely to be able to distinguish the Reds activity over the Exos idle.

If you need quieter storage, Reds (or whitelabelled He-filled WD CMR drives shucked from Easystores/MyBooks) are the better choice. Exos will be more reliable as an enterprise drive, but you probably want it in a rack remote to your location.

                • @Monsta-AU: Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Helped me make my mind up.

@TDLSU: My pleasure. Always happy to discuss things with friendly and respectful people.

                • @Monsta-AU: Yep, I have 2x 4TB WD Reds and 2x 16TB Seagate Exos in Gen8 HP Microserver. The Exos did make a lot of noise (clicks and thumps) as widely reported on forums etc. My server is in a cabinet in my garage, so the noise doesnt bother me.

But it was be scary to have loud clicks/noises coming from the hard disks. I ran long Unraid pre-clear scans on the disks and didnt find any errors, and have been running them for a while now without any issues.
