The only person travelling at the moment is James Harden.

  • +2

I bought one 6 months ago and I have still yet to use it :(

    • +1

I grabbed one over a year ago and i'm in the same boat =/

      • +5

I've got one too. Don't even know what it is

        • +2

It's a Glinet mango, some sort of new square mango variety.

  • How does this compare to the TP-LINK TL-WR902AC?

    • +1

The TP-link one is a AC750 travel router

GL.inet Mango is a VPN travel router
It has a physical button to easily switch on VPN
and if you are after third party plugins
there are lots that you can install on this little device

If you are just after a basic travel router
the TP-link one provide faster Wifi speed (AC 750 vs N 300)

If you are after features like connecting to VPN
or want to connect via mobile network (4G usb dongle / mobile phone internet tethering via cable)
Then Mango is a good choice

      • Does the Huawei 4G USB dongle work with this?

        • It works with my Telstra 4GX ZTE dongle and Optus 4G Huawei dongle

          • @littlesoldier: Thanks ls. Does it just repeat the WiFi on that dongle or does it get the internet from the usb and broadcast it through WiFi?

            • @wildstone: You can do it either way
Unless you want to plug the usb dongle (that has internal wifi) elsewhere to obtain better mobile signal
Otherwise I reckon using internet from usb and broadcast it through wifi would perform slightly better result

              • @littlesoldier: Thanks ls. Yes that's what I was hoping the device would do - broadcast from the usb. If it is merely repeating it will slow down the transmit I think.

          • @littlesoldier: Do you have the 607 versions of the Huawei or 608? I haven't been able to get the 608 to work.

            • +1

              @lwinstan: Mine is 607

            • @lwinstan: I have the gl.inet ar750 and I had to upgrade the firmware to OpenWRT 19.07 to get my Huawei Telstra 4GX dongle working on USB. May be worth a try.

      • What would be the better option for someone who wants to connect to hotel wifi/ethernet and use the modem/vpn combo to use Kayo/OptusSports/Netflix overseas?

    • Compare the specs on OpenWrt (which you can run on both smoothly): tl-wr902ac_v3 vs mt300n_v2. The latter has twice more RAM and flash memory, but doesn't support the 5Ghz band.

  • Thanks, will be travelling for work next month. Will come in handy.

    This looks like CommBank merchandise.

  • Amazing device. Purchased one about a year ago and have used it in all sorts of situations. Lastly was to repeat the wifi from my 4G modem in the ensuite upstairs and feed it into my wired network downstairs. Worked flawlessly. And like $20.

    • +2

I found this little device best fit scenario is to use with hotel free wifi
just simply connect and login once to the hotel captive portal
and all my devices can connect to internet via this router

Besides, bring a chromecast which pre-config to the same wifi SSID
allows me to easily cast Netflix and Youtube on the hotel room TV

    • I plug it into a spare/random network point at work. So I now have internet no one can trace back to me, as there's no login required for internet.

Oh yeah, the hotel thing does work great. Used it precovid when I went on an international holiday. Works well with Chromecast.

This is a good device for what it claim to be. There are also many fun tinkering you could do since it runs openwrt.

Just make sure to keep your expectation realistic if you want to re-purpose it.
I have both the GL-MT300N-V2 (Mango) and GL-MT1300 (Beryl) . Out of curiosity i tested hooking up an external HHD (both portable and non portable)/ SSD / USB stick to see how it'd fair as cheapo NAS device. read speed ~10-14MB/s, write speed ~6-7MB/s . Setting up NAS user read/write permission is not supported out of the box so anyone connected to this router can read the storage attached (you can probably set up user permission with some good openwrt knowledge). Though it still managed to stream 1080p video to my phone without hiccup.

  • Is the listing down? The link on here and google search redirects to the homepage.

    • Works now, might have been my network.

  • Dupe

  • Anybody in Canberra wants one? We can order 2 and split one each to save the shipping.

I'm in CBR and have prime so happy for you to piggy back off my order.

      • Thank you. Looks like it expired, sorry I wasn't browsing ozb earlier.

  • Saw the thumbnail first expecting a CBA CC deal 🤷‍♂️

Hey guys, will this work if I need to connect a wired LAN only device to my home wifi? Thanks

So basically can it convert my hime wifi to a LAN connection?

    • +1

Yes, you can set the router into repeater mode
Then connect to router to your home wifi
and connect a Ethernet cable in the "LAN port" of the router and your wired lan device

      • Thanks for that!

  • I’m currently using 2 of these for VPN, found the nord VPN not really as solid as it should be.
I found the i build apps for Android works much better like for nvidia shield, google tv and Amazon stick.
Need these to connect to Apple TV as it doesn’t have VPN apps unfortunately

    • Running the VPN app directly in the ios or android device will always perform better results
Given most mobile devices (or even Android TV) has better processor and rams etc
When I connect to Mango, it usually reduced around 20-30% network speed
but still good enough for video streaming purpose (might need a bit longer buffering time initially)

    • How do you use it to implement a vpn?
If not nord what service do you recommend?

      • +1

You can easily create a VPN client using the standard interface to a commercial provider, or easily create a server on one device and a client on the other again through the standard interface. See here for Wireguard instructions.

My suggestion would be to try to find a provider that supports Wireguard as it is a much leaner and efficient protocol which results in much better speeds than OpenVPN. Nord is still not fully supporting Wireguard at the moment.

  • These are good. I use them with 4G so I can configure routers in whoop whoop.

  • I'm using an Alcatel MW41 4G for home internet - does anyone know if I could use this device in another room to extend the WiFi range (like a repeater)?

Other than that it'd come in handy when travelling!

    • +1

You can make this to work as wifi repeater
but you will have to expect the network speed will drop compare to connecting to the main router
besides, given this router uses internal wifi antenna
IMO this might not extend the range that much

  • +2

I have no idea what this is for

  • Excellent value, but no 5ghz means there are better options for a little bit more $$.

  • I'm hoping I can setup as a clone to my home network for travel. We currently connect to a UDM where 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz are blended into the one SSID, so I'm hoping even this will just put out the same SSID and ios, android and google tv clients will work straight up. Am I missing anything?

  • I'm trying to think of the use cases for this when I travel, most of the time I rent a pocket WiFi dongle when I travel and run a Vpn client on my phone, for this it sounds as though I would need the pocket WiFi dongle, this device and a Powerbank if I were planning to use this on the move (as opposed to just running the Vpn client on my phone, tablet or laptop). Is there anything I've missed?

  • +2

Be aware that because this is a single band device (2.4 GHz) if you use in a wireless repeater mode you will effectively 1/2 your throughput as you are repeating and LANing on the same band. If you want to "maximise" bandwidth then using a dual band will do this, repeating on one band and WiFi LAN on the other. Really depends on your requirements.

    • Can I please get clarification on 'using a dual band will do this' ? Did you mean using a source that transmit 5ghz and repeat the wireless with Mango?

      • +1

Mango is only 2.4Ghz, you are splitting the band between repeater and WiFi LAN.
A dual band router has 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz. You repeat on one band (2.4Ghz) and Wifi on the other band (5.0Ghz) and don't lost half you're "information highway " as both bands are "dedicated" to only one use.

        • So you are saying if the original WiFi is 5Ghz, using Mango to repeat the Wifi will not lose performance. Is that correct?

          • @wildstone: If you try and connect the Mango to original 5Ghz Wifi you'll get NO performance :)

The Mango only supports 2.4Ghz so if your origin is 5Ghz you won't be able to attach via WiFi at all.

You will only be able to attached to a 2.4Ghz source signal. If you then have a Wireless LAN on 2.4Ghz on the Mango you will lose 1/2 your bandwidth.

If you attach via cable to the Mango you will get "full" bandwidth

If you attached a dual mode router on the 2.4Ghz to repeat and use the 5Ghz as WiFi LAN you will get "full" bandwidth

  • Thank op, got one.
Appreciate the colour as well. Will be easier to find/remember among all the black travel gadgets and chargers.

  • After some advice from tech guru please (tried googling already). My workplace offers free wifi but supposedly "not secure" as anyone including all customers can log in for 8 hours each time. If I use this router, but not go through any other 3rd party paid VPN service, would it make my connection more secure? I am too afraid to use the work wifi at the moment, particularly for banking, so end up using my mobile hotspot… Thanks!

    • +1

I think this is a great use case.

    • +1

If I use this router, but not go through any other 3rd party paid VPN service, would it make my connection more secure?

      No.

As long as you're sharing a LAN segment with untrusted hosts and there's no e.g. ARP spoofing protection in place, simply adding an extra access point (whether in repeater or wired AP mode) won't really improve anything.

For "general" security you need a VPN (or otherwise tunnel to an endpoint you trust; a VPN really only moves the security problem over to the VPN provider).

That said, HTTPS sites should be secure regardless. So banking over HTTPS should be fine, VPN or not.

  • Nice little device, as others have stated this is only a 2.4GHz device.

Can also be used as a PiHole/AdBlock DNS server for your network.

  • +2

Looks like it has gone back up to $29.99

  • +2

I am seeing $29.99 by clicking into the link. is that just me?

  • +1

    showing as $29.99

  • Marked as expired. All over guys. Till next time.
