                        • @oliman: Well there wouldn't be warranty if you were to replace the cpu cooler

                          Windows is pre cheap $20

I usually throw away the included mouse and keyboards

And sure lower storage but much better system integrity

                      • @ln28909: The PSU is not bad, it's been reported to be platinum spec. It's not standard ATX though.

                        • @lunchbox99: it's probably a server psu, and server psu is really cheap while providing excellent efficiency

and a 500w platinum vs a 750w gold, I would choose 750w gold, since the efficiency curve peaks at around 50% so real efficiency of both psu should be similar

750w would be much more versatile option

                          • @ln28909: This desktop is not designed for overclocking or expandability (beyond adding a HDD or SSD or two), but if the stock offering is enough its not bad.

                            • @lunchbox99:

If you buy the XPS 8940 replace:

                              • CPU cooler with a Noctua NH-U9S (no mounting bracket needed but you need to buy additional M3x20mm screws from Bunnings to mount to existing socket holes)

                              • rear case fan with Noctua NF-A9 PWM

After doing this my desktop doesn't throttle under load (roughly 15C cooler under full load).

well seems pretty insufficient if you have to do mods on them to prevent thermal throttling

And the point of a 10700k is to overclock, is it not?

                              • @ln28909: yeah the stock cooling relies on thermal profile throttling the CPU under load. Pretty weak sauce but the noctua cooler and fan cost me $130, and I'm fairly happy with the result.

The other thing that swayed me was in Dec when I got it, you couldn't get a RTX 3xxx series anywhere.

                                • @lunchbox99: That defeats the point of this system to me

Since you now have a system with no warranty at a pretty mediocre price with sub standard parts

I would only buy this system for the warranty

                                  • +2

@ln28909: Bullshit no warranty. I can swap the cooler back in 5mins. It's literally 4 screws. Don't spread FUD.

                                    • @lunchbox99: I'm just saying with the amount of effort you put in, you could have built a better system for the same if not cheaper price (after mod considered) than when this system was first posted during that time

3070 was readily available in November and December at reasonable price, many sub $1000

And well you're deceiving dell whether you're okay with that or not is not my concern but it is what it is

                                      • +1

@ln28909: Amount of effort? It took me 5mins to attach. For someone advocating building the entire system, I would have thought you wouldn't be afraid of changing a CPU cooler.

I think on balance the system is pretty good. I have never bought a prebuilt in my life before this. Sure it has limitations, but I'm aware of them and they are fine with me.

                                        • @lunchbox99: Yes putting on the cpu cooler is the hardest part in building a system, since you could bend pins, not get correct contacts, etc. All the other parts are much easier

And I don't go and advocate to people to make lies and deceptions, you are voiding your warranty for doing this mod

From an ozbargain pov, you were ripped off, but if you're happy with it then I guess that's okay

                                          • +1

@ln28909: You dont have to remove the CPU to replace the cooler so no risk of bent pins. You literally unscrew 4 screws on the stock cooler, pull it off, clean and add new thermal paste to the CPU, plonk new cooler on top and tighten 4 screws. It is literally 5 mins.

You are not voiding your warranty. That is bullshit.

                                            • @lunchbox99: Send a message to Dell eBay, get their response and I'll agree to your point

Oh and btw that "3070" is actually a rebranded 3060 ti, it only has 1 8 pin power connector

                                              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-unused-RTX-3070-pulled-From-…

Can you run a user benchmark, I wanna see where it stands among other 3070

                                              • +3

@ln28909: Consumer law cannot be excluded for changes unrelated to the failure. I frankly don't care if you agree with the law or not. What you are proposing is like a car manufacturer saying you have to buy their tyres or oil filter or else your warranty is voided. This is illegal in Australia.

You seem to have a justice boner for the XPS 8940. If you have no interest in any of these deals wtf are you in here arguing with everyone? Just go away.

                                                • @lunchbox99: I always like dell deals, good monitors, cheap price

Also you don't wanna share that user benchmark result?

And I think a cpu is pretty crucial to a system, but you can have fun arguing I guess

                                                  • +1

@ln28909: Nobody cares. If you like the deal, buy one. If you don't like it, then don't buy one. I don't know why this is a personal vendetta for you.

I'm beginning to suspect you are actually a stooge from one of the system/parts sellers. Go away stooge.

                                                    • @lunchbox99: Well you're the one initiated this, I was only simply talking to someone else before you jump in and try to justify your purchase decision

It doesn't matter to me, if you're happy with it great

                                                      • @ln28909: No denial on the stooge allegation then. Gotcha.

                                                        • +1

@lunchbox99: Well, I know a few system builders but I haven't recommend them, the only one that I recommend so far is virco which I have never met them in real life, was merely through talking on ozbargain and they seems like a great team

Why do I have a feeling that you're getting buyer remorse

For future, if you would like the best bang for your buck, I'm always happy to help

Also you basically admit that you're astroturfing on behalf of system sellers. Maybe change your badge to affiliated because your comments seem commercially motivated.

                                                            • @lunchbox99: If you look at my post history, you'll know I look around a lot in this space

And like I said, I have never recommended anyone on here to go to someone that I know. That's not what ozbargain is for

                                • @lunchbox99: Can you please mind sharing the link for $130 cooler and fan? :)

                                  • +1

                                    @oliman: Bought on newegg.

Ships from Taiwan but much cheaper than local.
                                    https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/noctua-nf-a9-pwm-case-fa…

It's actually much less than $130. Or you can pay a bit more locally and get it sooner.

                                    • @lunchbox99: Thanks a lot!!

so the fan in first link, you put it on the chasis back by replacing existing

and the heat sink in link 2, you replace it with stock heatsink…yeah

                                      • +1

@oliman: Yup, and do it in that order - case fan then cpu cooler.

ie remove stock cooler and back case fan. Install back case fan first then cpu cooler - if your put the cpu cooler on first, space will be tight trying to fit the rear case fan.

You also need m3x20mm screws from Bunnings. This will allow you to mount the Noctua cooler supports into the existing MB holes without modifications.

Goes without saying, keep your stock bits in a safe place in case you want to swap them back again. I put mine in the empty Noctua cooler box.

                                        • @lunchbox99: thanks. one last question, why should I replace back case fan? Is that not so good/powerfull?

                                          • @oliman: The default fan is smaller, so you get better removal of heat from the case with the replacement. The case has 2 mount hole sizes and the stock uses the smaller one.

The biggest improvement is from replacing the CPU cooler, then the case fan.

                                            • @lunchbox99: Thank you for the reply.

I was just thinking to add a single fan to the existing CPU cooler only. Somehow stick it to the existing heat sink. Minimal cost thay way and some degrees down I guess? As I live in Melb, the weather is mostly cold throught the year so I was thinking if this can be another low cost option to improve cooling?

                                              Your thoughts lunchbox99?

                                              • @oliman: The stock K series cooler is OK. It's just that under prolonged full load it will throttle to keep the temps under control. If this doesn't affect your use then I guess it doesn't matter.

This is what Dell is betting on - that most peoples usage is short bursts at full load rather than sustained full loads. If you do bursty loads, then the stock cooling is fine. If you do sustained loads but don't care about throttling, then the stock cooling is fine (although it does get very close to Tmax at times!).

Adding another fan will certainly help, but my guess is 3-5C from what I read on Dell forums. Better than nothing.

                                                • @lunchbox99: Thanks! Any idea which single fan can be added to stock coller? I mean which can be easily attached and is least noisy?

Really appreciate your replies! very knowledgeable.

                                                  • @oliman: I'm guessing any 92mm PWM fan would be fine, but there is no specific mounting mechanism onto the stock cooler.

You would have to see if the fan clips (if included with the new fan) can latch on somewhere, or rig something up - cable ties or something?

The other issue is power - there will be no spare MB header, so you need a PWM Y splitter to allow you to connect both fans to one header. Some fans like the Noctua I suggested above come with a splitter.

Also this only applies to K series cooler (the block type) found on the XPS 8940 with i7-10700K. The lower spec non-K cpus come with a really bad tiny cooler that looks like the standard intel type.

                                                    • +1

@lunchbox99: Thanks for all the helpful responses. Really appreciate it!

                                                      • +1

@oliman: This is what the stock cooler looks like - the flat area on the front is only 55x70mm, so it's not going to be easy to mount another fan.
                                                        https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-DELL-CPU-Cooling-fan-with-heats…

You can see in the picture that the stock fan goes well below the bottom of the heatsink.

By contrast the Noctua NH-u9s heatsink is basically a cube designed to have a fan attached on either end.

                                                • @lunchbox99: I am going to run the K version without the RTX 3070. Would this setup reduced internal heating and less chance of CPU throttling back?

                                                  • @Black Hole: Well yes it will help, but if you run the CPU on full load (my test is h265 encodes using all cores) it will throttle even if the GPU is doing nothing. There are few usage scenarios that peg all cores @ 100% all the time though, so in many cases people won't even notice.

Benchmarking and video encoding, some big data work, some games etc will show the throttling for example.

                        • @lunchbox99: Hi mate. Just wondering since you have this PC - is the existing ram soldered on? And are there spare ram slots available? Thanks

  • What brand names are the parts for the 8940?

    • Check the other threads on that model. Ram is Hynix. I got a WD SSD.

Thanks OP. I procrastinated all weekend on getting the S2721D.
Managed to get the S2721DS for cheaper and now have the stand to adjust.

  • Any recommendations for the gaming laptop?

  • Really need to get the AW3821DW, hopefully a deal soon. Had to return my AW3420DW as it has bright pixel.

  • does anyone know what brand of 3070 is this? People that bought from BFS don't seem to know what they're purchasing. One seems to think that it's a generic 3070 Dell GPU brand, but I don't think Dell ever manufactured any GPU.

    • I did some research on this…it is believed MSI bulk manufactures this GPU for DELL.

      • Thanks! I presume MSI Ventus 2x?

      • 2 or 3 fan?

        • 2 fan

        • -3

          its a 3 fan

          • @lunchbox99: Are you sure?

            • +1

@mrtee: Just opened the case, it is a 2 fan

Looks like MSI twin fan more than the Ventus https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-RTX-3070-TWIN-FAN

            • -2

@mrtee: It's 2 fans and will perform much worse than other 2 fans model since it is limited to 225w of power whereas an average 3070 can do 320w

In other word, it'll perform at best about 80% of a normal 3070

It is pretty much a 3060 ti twin fan rebranded to 3070

@ln28909: The RTX 3070 founder edition is also a single connector

                • @lunchbox99: 12 pin connector is the equivalent to 2 8pin connector = 300w safe load

                  1 8 pin connector = 150w safe load

                  • @ln28909: Wrong.

                    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/30-serie…

                    Look at the specs.
                    "1x PCIe 8-pin (adapter to 1x 12-pin included)"

Dell is also using a custom PSU, which is entirely the point.

                    • @lunchbox99: Well okay I take it back, looks like an average 3070 is only 240w not 320w, high end card is about 270w

And that's an error in their spec listings cause if a gpu pulls 240w from 1 8 pin power connector that is out of the recommended specs and nvidia wouldn't do that

Look just post your 3070 user benchmark score and run gpu z to provide us with the bios model so it's easier to discuss

I would assume the dell bios would limit this card to 200w power

                      • +1

@ln28909: Or maybe you are wrong. Maybe, just maybe, Nvidia and dell know more about electronics than you do.

                        • @lunchbox99: Why are you so defensive in sharing the stats when you were so helpful in providing advice before

And okay so the card has 12 pin to 8 pin adapter so fair enough it's only running 225w max power draw, it's interesting that they have the power limit in the bios to 240w

So yeah I guess it's still a 3070 after all

                      • @ln28909: http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/21/01/25/t4j.png

As you can see, it's clearly a 3070

              • +1

@ln28909: 3060 ti and 3070 are 2 tottally different GPU chips. How can you 'rebrand' an actual physical GPU chip????

                • @oliman: They are made on the same gpu die ga104

One is just more cut-down than the other

              • @ln28909: I'm also confused as to how did you conclude this Dell 3070 GPU is a rebrand of 3060ti?

Has anyone done a benchmark of this 'rebranded' 3070? Surely someone from BFS can chime in?

  • No Ultrasharps :(

  • Why people are not buying this like crazy this time?

    • perhaps it is not advocated by the Dell rep and its not BFS.

  • I've been looking for a desktop for alot of work in lightroom plus the odd game here and there. Would the XPS 8940 be suitable for roughly the next five years?

  • How about this one guys ?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-S2719HSE-S-Pro-27-FHD-Monit…

Is it better than S2721DS? As I can see a deal at amazon aus under $300

    • This one is FHD not 2K.

      • Ok. Cheers

    • Crap.

  • Dell G5 or XPS? Which is better?

    • XPS for following reasons. Better processor, additional 2tb hdd, optical drive.

      • So worth the extra $100-150

        • of course. better resale too in future.

    • Only the fourth time this question has been asked in the thread.

    • XPS laptops are amazing on paper, but are plagued with QC issues. I've been burnt twice and don't even look at XPS anymore. But ymmv :)

      • Heating problems?

        • My issues with a XPS 13 9300 were, uneven display (yellow tint on the bottom half), thermal issues and adaptive brightness control that can't be turned off (hardware level).

Others have also reported misaligned trackpads on recent models. Just do a Google search or check on Reddit and you'll find many more.

  • Is the rtx3070 better than an rtx 2080ti if all other internals are the same? Because I've got a deal in my cart from HP for 2k, with the rtx2080ti.

  • thanks, OP just bought a 610m mouse and 510k keyboard for $217 with gift card for another 10% off. JB price is $460 total

    • 10% ebay gift card?

      • +2

should be, I bought them ages ago. I even can't remember when I bought them. And last Dec I bought some more 20% ebay gift card from coles ($50 card with 2000 flybuy points) and 10% off swap + 10% off zip pay. I have plenty of ebay card and most the gift card I spent on ebay is dell.

Anyone has the 16 ram stick for this xps who wanna sell?

  • Does anyone know if you can daisy chain 2 x S2721DS? In other words, I'd like to have the pair connected to two computers and switch display via the panel console as and when needed?

    • I have a monitor connected to 2 PC 1 through DP and another through HDMI. It works fine

  • Hi all, if anyone could help me:

Dell XPS 8940 Tower Desktop 10th Gen i7-10700k 16GB RAM 1TB SSD NVIDIA RTX 3070
    Alienware Aurora R11 Desktop i7 10700F 16GB 512GB Liquid Cool RTX 2080 SUPER

Which one is better? I would prefer 32GB RAM, but these look good in other aspects. I am using my MSI laptop for working and casual gaming (LOL). I use CAD and SketchUp, Enscape for rendering. Would like a desktop to work with for long term.

      According to GPU Benchmarks:
      2080ti > 3070 > 2080 super

      • So the answer is XPS 8940 then :) cheers

        • +1

The R11 would probably perform better since it probably has better components and won't be thermal throttled. Probably not 30% better though (from account for the cost).

          • @mandelbrot: Agreed, I'd rather get XPS 8940 and spend a little more for a16GB RAM. Would it affect the warranty though?
