  • Is there a difference in all HDMI cables?
For audio specifically. Just upgraded my pre amp and it finally takes HDMI.

My tv is an old Samsung 8000

I found that for anything 4K and above, the spec/quality of the cable does make a difference. Older HDMI cables would give me severe artifacts/noise and were unusable.

It's the same thing with DisplayPort cables. Some people argue they're all the same but I find the majority of cheap/no-name cables just don't work.

  • +1

Will you have these available in 5m lengths at some point?

  • For some reason I thought HDMI 2.1 spec was 60Gbps, but it is 48Gbps. I ordered a cable, thanks!

  • Is this "version" applicable to cable or just the ports it plugs into?

  • I got a Monster HDMI 2.1 Cable 3.6m. Plugged into PS5 to my TV Q800T Port 4 HDMI 2.1. Every now and then, the screen went black for a few seconds before back again. Not often but occasional enough to be of concern. Remember this is Monster cable, supposedly the best of the best.

After rummaging through internet, found out a few suggestions. One of them was reducing the Subchroma Sampling from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2. Did that and it never blinked again. In addition to this, when changing the sound to Dolby/DTS, it produces a split second / snap static sound before moved into Dolby/DTS mode.

My Xbox One X incidentally is plugged into Port 3 (HDMI 2.0b port). Also Ultra HDMI cable (XCD brand) but only 2.4m. Playing on this port never produced a blink. The audio setup is also easier and didn't produce a snap static sound like PS5 did. This cable is cheaper than Monster.

Now, I would like to think it's the PS5 is the devil here but having to reduce the Subchroma Sampling convinced me it's the effing cable and this is Monster cable.

So yeah, cable matters and no, Monster cable is not the best.

      Oh dang! Thanks
So what cable will you use now?
I assume you’ve looked and reviewed?

      • +1

Well… turns out my Xbox One X is a MUCH better Blu Ray player and streaming so I am using it a lot. What many people don't know is Xbox One X supports transcoding DTS into Dolby so movies that are DTS only are playable with my Xbox but on PS5, it produces a nasty static sound which suggests PS5 doesn't support transcoding.

For PS5, after reducing the SubChroma Sampling to 4:2:2, the cable is working fine so I won't be getting another cable.

Having said that, I noticed neither Monster, nor XCD cables are HDMI 2.1 certified (no logo).

My point is give this Proxima cable a try. Low cost of failure if you start seeing stuttering or performance caps or in my case, occasional signal loss which suggests the cable in fact, can't handle 4:4:4 without incurring some transmission loss. At least with this cable it says it supports 4:4:4. Monster cable didn't say anything like that.

        • Thanks for the info!
I was hoping my PS5 would save me from buying a dedicated Blu-ray player! I guess not :/

          • @Owgasm: You can play BD in PS5.

But be warned. There is no HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos in PS5. The first one is confirmed through first experience. I can't test the 2nd one as Q800T doesn't support Dolby Vision but does support HDR10+. I can't test Atmos coz my amp is not Atmos enabled.

And for some BD like Weathering With You 4K disc (DTS-HD MA), when I play it via PS5, the audio becomes 2.0 (The reason as I have found out is Q800T doesn't support DTS format at all) but when I played it in Xbox One X, it transcodes that DTS to become Dolby Digital 5.1 and I can get 5.1. In terms of cable, both Monster (after 4:2:2 SubChroma Sampling downgrade) and XCD played without transmission loss.

If I had my time again, I'd probably get this Proxima cable.

EDIT: Then again, maybe not due to compatibility issues.
EDIT: Corrected that Q800T in fact doesn't support DTS at all after re-reading my notes on my PS5 BD issues.

    • I hope you got that monster cable cheap.?

      • +1

No lah. $99 (down from $180 or something as if it was a favour) but I was desperate at the time.

PSA - this cable has issues with PS5 and Bravia x900h. Keeps displaying 'new input detected' notification and shows prompt to setup new device, every time PS5 powered on. Cable that came with PS5 (real 2.1) doesn't do this. I am returning the ones I got.

    • Ooh… that's good to know.

  • -1

    Cheap and dodgy

    • Was quite happy with the quality, didn't seem cheap, solid design and superior mesh style cable, velcro cable ties included etc. Probably not proper/official 2.1 spec though given the issue I kept having….

  • +3

I've had my lesson, so I now only get HDMI certified cables.

Ultra High Speed HDMI = 48Gbps
Premium High Speed HDMI = 18Gbps

Ultra High Speed HDMI® Cable Certification
    https://www.hdmi.org/spec21sub/ultrahighspeedcable

Monoprice has those certified cables at reasonable price

  • I've got one of these Proxima HDMI cables - does not work properly with my TV at 4K. Occasionally flickers to green, and every so often the Xiaomi MiBox plugged into it won't detect 4K, so it defaults back to 1280x720. This setup works perfectly with another cable I have.

As @fdsjkl says, only get certified cables. These non-certified cables are just landfill.

  • Anyone know if the usb-c on this supports Thunderbolt DP?
