  • Mostly decent except the "upgrade your ram" price is pretty weak considering you can buy 16Gb of RAM for around $80 now. I would expect an upgrade the full 8Gb capacity for around the $40 mark.

    • Actually the screen kinda kills it…
WXGA = 1280×768, which would also explain why they conveniently leave that out.

      • For desktop RAM yes, 16GB kits are around $80. Laptop RAM does cost more as it is literally 1/3 the size with the same amount of memory on the module. $38 is a decent price for original Acer RAM + installation.

        • I agree with the OP, $38 for 4GB RAM including installation is a good price if you don't know how to install RAM.
No doubt you can do it yourself cheaper, but not everyone has that technical knowledge.

A 4GB DDR3-1066/PC3-8500 laptop module can be had for about $30 from ebay if you know how to put it in. This would be required if there are 2 x 1GB modules in the laptop already. You could get a little back by reselling the module(s) you take out.
If there's already a 2GB module there, you can add a 2GB module from ebay for as little as $10-$15, provided you can match the RAM that is already in the machine.

  • +1

This is not a bargain. This is just a normal price for an i3 laptop.

    • Find me a 2nd gen i3 laptop, with office starter for this price then :|

      • Would you give this out for free if I can prove it is not a bargain at all?

      • +2

        Well:
        http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7943
This is cheaper once you put in the $50 Lenovo Cashback, and it has more RAM and a dedicated graphics card

        • That's one of them that I was going to show him/her.

  • +3

Not a bargain, and don't show the price with an *, show it as $517 - $49 cashback in title.

    • Can't fit in title!

      • +11

You could if you didn't use meaningless phrases like "hot laptop offer!". This is not an advertising forum, let us decide based on all the facts clearly stated - not jargonny slogans.

    • the pre-cashback price should be in title, as well as shipping costs if there are any

  • +3

    Office starter is free now?
    http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/11/office-starter-2010-ava…

    this is not a deal

    • +1

That was a hack (well, more a very poorly secured file on MS's part). It lasted only a short while until the security was patched, was not offered by MS as free, and was of questionable legality.

That said, each Starter license costs a normal every day system builder $2 a pop. For the likes of Acer I wouldn't be surprised if it were free or so close to free as to be ignored.

Harvey Norman is doing it for $25 more

    REALLY NOT A DEAL lol

  • Haha, tough crowd. Especially this time of year…

    • +2

Well to be fair, if you put in some extra money you can get a Core i7 Laptop with 8 GB of Ram for $599 at Centrecom, that's why everyone is so harsh on this deal.

  • +1

Alternative from Penta, Asus X54H for $429 (no waiting months for cash back required).

Same CPU, more RAM in the Asus, same HDD, same connectivity, same graphics, the Penta Asus has USB3.0 and the Acer doesn't, Asus is arguably a better brand than Acer, Asus has an arguably better screen, Acer includes Starter (value ~$2).

    Yeah. Not a bargain.

  • good info, but can be better :)
