Apple Mac Mini M1 - 8GB/256GB - $999 (RRP $1099) @ Umart (-5% OW Price Beat = $949.05)

1630

For anyone that's been thinking about getting the base Mac Mini M1 that's just been released.

JB Hifi had a cheaper ($10) discounted price over the weekend, but you couldn't price beat it as OW dropped their price to match. They haven't yet price dropped for this retailer and they will price beat it. Stock currently available in NSW.

Umart: $999 - 5% Officeworks price beat = $949.05 delivered/collect.

I think this price beat price may be the lowest I've seen for this model (roughly 15% off Apple store) and Mac Mini's aren't eligible for Unidays offer.

          It's a classy machine.

  • I'm waiting for M2…

    • How long will that be?

      • +1

        Usually, a year lol.

I'm doing the same. I want an all in one system. Which means extra io.

expensive frisbee (especially once you factor in potential jaw reconstruction)

sure Apple has a pile of money to put behind the concept

I am just not convinced that this is the future of computing

and I would be cautious about paying $$$ for beta testing it for Apple

I will let others do that and see how it plays out :) I never buy 1st iteration of any new kind of product. well I can buy 2 years later if they turn out good (by that time there will be stable firmware etc and all problems would be ironed out and it will be cheaper too)

so see you in 2 years

I would normally agree but this ain't a new gadget these computers are mostly the same as the other models it's just these chips are different and they genuinely seem groundbreaking. And seeing as these are so cheap performing so well on tests it's easily worth the gamble. Especially with apples holding their value so well you could easily resell if you aren't happy and not loose much. So if you need to buy an apple now it's not really a gamble at all. In fact be as big as gamble to buy Intel versions as they will probably be discontinued next year now and won't hold their value as well if these arm chips take over.

yep that's the chips I am talking about mate

@shabaka: We’re all professionals here. Just ask Harvey Norman.

            • @WhyAmICommenting: yes I can see that

in a laptop ARM CPU would make a lot of sense because it reduces power consumption dramatically increasing standby times, I can understand that, and a few companies attempted that with various degree of success

an ARM based desktop sounds pointless to me. it's an answer to a problem no one actually had

time will tell, I don't care how things will play out either way

I just won't be funding it out of my own pocket :)

              • @shabaka: Fair enough. Power costs money. So if it’s using 1/2 the power over the years that adds up. Also almost instant start up is still valuable sitting down to a desktop. Anyway, your call.

I would have got one but the wife wasn’t interested so I upgraded my PC instead for half the cost. (Shrug)

                • @WhyAmICommenting: even if it's using half the power, it will take around 5-10 years to offset the cost of $949 which is why people seldom do these kinds of upgrades to save power

lightbulbs are perfect in that regard, going from old school bulbs to led costs a few bucks but makes considerable impact on power bills

No I don't deal with evil companies - Apple I'm talking about.

Apple spy's on you harder than china

  • I bought the m1 8gb Mac mini via qantas ff points a couple of weeks ago when they had 10% off using points.
When comparing the purchase of a jbhifi kind of gift card using points it worked out to be around $940 equivalent (that’s the $amount of gift card the points would of got).
I’m not great with computers so for whatever it’s worth…… wow, the Mac mini performs really well.
Quick start up, no issues so far and everything works well. So fast compared to my 4yo all in one Toshiba but most things would be I suppose.
Looks great on the 34inch xiaomi gaming monitor I got from Kmart (via post on this site).
Got the latest magic keyboard but can’t bring myself to pay $119 for the magic mouse2.
Great fast little PC. Daughter loves gaming on it now. No longer turns on her 1 year old dell laptop, the m1 mac runs rings around that.

Got the latest magic keyboard but can’t bring myself to pay $119 for the magic mouse2.

Don't spend $119 on that trash mouse. The magic mouse is ashamedly bad from both a performance and ergonomic point of view. Get an MX Master instead IMO.

Also, not being able to use the mouse when it's charging has got to be one of the dumbest things I've seen.

      • Wow, is it that bad? I would buy a near new used one for like $50/$60 but nothing more. I got that latest brand new magic keyboard which was sealed and unused for $60 so hoping the same for the mouse but may check out that one you mentioned instead.

        • I wouldn't really recommend buying the magic mouse either.

I've got 2 of them (didn't actually pay for it) and they're good but not really worth paying the extra money for. Just get a cheaper wireless mouse.

I much prefer using my trackball mouse though.. a bit old school but it's so easy to use and convenient not moving a mouse around.

        • Wow, is it that bad?

Yes. Apple has a history of designing pretty bad mice. Remember the hockey puck?

The issue with the magic mouse is that it's way too flat. Just look at it - it looks nothing like the shape of your hand. The fact that both the right and left click buttons are one button is silly and simply detects the right click in software (yes, I know the history, but let's face it, macOS now uses right click in practically the same way as Windows, so a one-button mouse makes no sense).

Also the charge port is on the bottom of the mouse which has got to be the most ridiculous place to put it.

There's also no scroll wheel (no, touch scrolling does not work as well as a scroll wheel).

          • @p1 ama: Yes, they do mice pretty poorly don't they?

Having said that I've been using the Apple Magic Trackpads for… 10 years now? They're not great for games (which Macs don't excel at anyway), but they're excellent for all things you'd use your MacBook's trackpad for, which is 99% of the productivity and daily apps I use.

On the rare occasion I play games on the Mac though, I grab the mouse!

    • I have one which I haven’t used for 3 years… it’s that bad.

      • -2

m1 chip hasn't been out that long. It's been out for about 2 months

        • ……………………….. the reply was for the Magic Mouse 2…………….

    • what games?
