Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Lens for Sony E-Mount $951.20 + $7.95 Shipping @ Michaels

Pretty sure this is all-time low for any stock (even grey import). I have it and it is a great do it all lens, arguably the best superzoom out there - sharp, fast. Only downsides are no OIS and 'limited' range compared to the (much worse optically) 24-240mm for example.

Part of the 20% off sale. Apparently there's rumors the store is closing down after Q1 on Whirlpool.

Great all around lens. Same size and weight as the Tamron 17-28mm 2.8f lens.

  • A 200mm lens without any OIS sounds like a prime recipe for lots of blurred out zoom shots

    • In camera mate…

    • Most of the Sony cameras have IBIS and you can get sharp shots relatively easily at 1/50th with proper technique.

  • Banger price.
Tempted to get it as a catch all lens to pair with a7iii.

Big news if true regarding close. Michael's always held a special place in my heart. It was like a more trendy and upmarket version of photo continental ( which I sorely miss but understand why it had no way to survive in the age of internet focused training.)

    • I went through the website and unfortunately even with 20% off their prices are not very competitive (unlike Digi sales). This is the only deal that stood out.

Oh yeah nah - I’m surprised they made it this far. There’s just no space in retail environment for businesses that can’t adapt.

I tried searching for this lens on google/shopbot and neither showed Michael’s as even an option.

        Top choices:
        Digidirect and George’s.
Both of which throw heaps at online/targeted advertising.

yeah, nah. f5.6 on the long end is nowhere near what most people would consider "fast"

Please link a superzoom that starts at f/2.8 (hint: there is none) and ends at f/5.6 at this range. Not to mention one that maintains f/4 at 70mm. The equivalent Sony 24-240mm is f/3.5-6.3 and hits f/5 at 70mm.

Be aware that lenses with a huge range like 28-200mm always involve a large compromise on image quality. For quality: prime lenses > small range zooms > large range zooms. Would generally recommend 2 lenses to cover this range - a 28-70 and a 70-200. If you are just in it for a bit of fun, you probably should just stick with your iPhone camera.

    • This lens makes the very reasonable compromises I mentioned in the description. It is sharp enough to get a 'very good' rating on a 61MP! A7R IV sensor (sonyalpha.blog mega list). Distortion, vignetting, coma etc. is limited and probably the best of any superzoom. The only other main issue is 'rougher' bokeh. This lens on a full frame camera is completely incomparable to an iPhone.

  • I already have 28-70. Do I need this?

    • Do you find yourself wanting a longer reach? Do you travel often and value compactness/convenience? 70mm is rather limited, usually standard zooms go to 105mm. This lens optically is miles ahead of the 28-70mm and faster throughout the range. Unless you absolutely need OSS I would sell that and get this.
