Still sticking to my guns on the "f*** facebook" aspect of the Oculus.

    • +1

What alternate options are there at this price and specs?

      • +11

LOL Nothing. Expect to pay over $1500 these days for the similar Valve Index headset and controllers. (Index has better finger tracking, but can't be used without a gaming PC)

I gave up and just bought the Quest 2. It's amazing so far.

If you already own a PC or console, a Quest 2 will give you a far bigger "wow factor" than the new consoles, for less. It's like discovering video games for the first time all over again.

      • +1

Nothing. Fairly sure FB are taking a loss on these.

        • Great I am happy for FB to take a loss.
But question is why would they - is there privacy issues or are they loaded with advertisements in the games, etc?

          • +2

@specwarop: You sign in with your Facebook account. Literally everything you do after turning it on is tracked (and possibly while off). It's an advertisers wet dream.

            • @Tacooo: Possible to sign up for a dud FB account just for the Quest?

              • +4

@specwarop: Not really, they have a tendency to auto ban Facebook accounts if they are created and then used to sign into a quest. I have the quest 1 and 2 and it happened to me cos I didn’t know my main account password so I made a new one. I didn’t worry about it until I got the quest 2 and it was mandatory to sign into Facebook, I couldn’t use any of my apps until they changed the linked account to my main account. There was quite a few people complaining about this on reddit a few months back.

              • @specwarop: I created a joint one for wife and I and use it for the Quest 2. So far fine.

            • +2

@Tacooo: To be honest I don't know what else you can "do" except playing VR games. Unless they want to send me ads about getting taller or telling me I am horrible in beat saber.

              • +2

@Letrico: Facebook has shadow profiles for people who have no fb account. Imagine how much sh*t they can harvest if you actually let them map out a room and the people inside.

                • +1

@krisspy: Yea well customer profiling exist everywhere, including ozbargain. Fearing for the guardian room mapping is so minor compare things what smartphones do like passively listening to you and give you targetted ads.

I am not sure why Facebook is the target for fearmongering while Google and Apple is worst.

          • +5

@specwarop: Facebook explicitly states in their ToS that they collect data on:
            1. Your human physical features and dimensions (their example is hand-tracking data, but…)
            2. Content you create, such as photos, avatars, audio, sculptures, etc.
            3. Cookies, etc for web pages viewed in VR.
            4. Interactions with the Oculus web browser, voice data when you use voice interactions / commands.
            5. Your environment (room), physical movements and dimensions (their example is Guardian boundary setup, but…)
            6. Usual 3rd party data.
            7. Tech data such as IP, local computer file path, device IDs, etc.
            https://www.oculus.com/legal/privacy-policy/

Edit: Also as a reminder, Facebook reserves the right to require scanned copies of government photo ID as proof that your account uniquely belongs to you.

          • +1

@specwarop: Honestly, to answer the why would they, I feel like it's LARGELY because they genuinely feel as though it's going to be a massive market down the line and they want to corner the market.

Once it is/if it is it would be a wet dream come true for them in terms of advertisement, if they can grow VR into the next major form of media, which they really do seem keen on, it'll end up paying for itself in the mid-long run.

      • I did some research and will wait until I get into the VR side of things instead of getting the Quest 2. It will be cheaper and another company will release one in the next few years.

I bought a Switch instead for the time being.

    • Can only hope Germany wakes them up with their lawsuit. But we all know that it's only this cheap to get people in the system. I'm all for collecting data to improve tech but… Facebook doesn't need to be this way surely.

      • I find it very hard to believe these cost this much or more to make, such that FB are making a loss. The markup is insane, much like iPhones don't cost even close to $2k to make

I would be happier spending the extra money on the HTC variants, so as to avoid the FB privacy invasion. Either that or just simply go without.

The $40 for warranty and AU plug is worth it.

    • +3

Not to mention it isn't sold out on amazon au but you will be waiting for stock from amazon US.

  • +3

One of the things you will eventually replace is the Oculus touch controller, buying your Quest locally from Amazon au means you will have Aussie warranty i.e much easier to persuade FB to replace broken hardware if it fails in warranty period

The controllers are very expensive to replace so there is a definite upside to buying from Amz au. I replaced mine because of joystick drift — common issue.

    • Did you replace it and have it covered under warranty?

Also, any advice with cleaning the lens? I also bought silicone covers and my face drips with sweat from underneath the headset/eyes. Synth rider is the bomb!

      • +2

Yeah I went thru customer support, uploaded a video of the issue and attached it with my (initial) request. Sent it overseas to Hong Kong and received a replacement about 2 weeks later.

Also, any advice with cleaning the lens?

Microfiber cloth only, no cleaning solvents, at most very dilute alcohol sprayed onto the cloth and give your lens a gentle wipe

Everything around the lens I just clean with a Dettol wet wipe

Seems there is an Amazon AU link too.

  • +1

I'd deffo go with a Aussie Amazon or local store warranty means alot.

    • It’s an .AU your normal warranty right apply, amazon and Consumers affairs have advised this.

The warranty a train set for me last month that was 2 years old ( 3 year warranty) I got from Amazon.con.au from the USA

Love the oculus. The only issue if you have kids it's hard to find time to play it as it is isolating and when you get a chance cos kids are asleep that's 8-8:30 at this point I cbf jumping into VR as it actually feels like an effort compared to Jumping on the Xbox.

I couldn't even imagine how much worse of cbf if you had to hookup to a PC.

    • +2

I've actually found the opposite. It's basically a mobile phone i.e. Just wear it and it turns on. I can be in beat saber in less than a minute from typing this comment and getting up.

    • I get what you mean, all I have to do is move a table / chair and I'm gtg but still cbf

  • I am wondering what the practical difference between 64 and 256gb? Is it worth the money?

    • If you purchase alot or intend to store media that's your answer.

      The games are small though.

      • so it is HDD space and everything is only installed in the device only?
It does not work if installed on a PC?

        • +1

You install oculus games directly on the device. They don't use much. PC games are installed on PC as normal and this just acts as a peripheral.

        • you need to use oculus link (the usb cable) to link to your PC if you want to access the PC game (Half Life Alynx) and this do not use storage in the Oculus, however a lot of VR games is quite small and you can delete and reinstall if you lack the storage, for example SUPERHOT VR use 5.17 GB only.

          • +1

@dione: Plenty will work wireless if you buy Virtual Desktop on the Oculus Store too

  • +2

If you have a wifi 6 capable router you get virtually no lag over wireless,or at least i cant tell. Tried virtual desktop with reaction tester and was getting 218ms on wireless quest and 180ms on pc but thats with 144hz monitor. Invest in a larger generic battery pack and strap it to the back instead of the elite headset with velcro, you only get a 5000mh battery with their inhouse strap battery combo. But if you do buy a usb link cable you get asgards wrath for free if you plug it in the first time tho with a an appropriate usb cable tho so dont forget to do that at least once.
