  • I bought this, a step up in VR tech for sure - simply amazing

  • +50

i would 100% get this if it wasnt for the bloody Facebook mandate

    • -7

      might be ootl and ready to get destroyed with downvotes, but;

what's the issue with making sure you have a facebook account/making your current one is in good stead?

also, if you delete your PSN/Nintendo account, don't your purchased games fall into the void? how is this different?

like what am I missing here? I don't see the issue.

      • +18

Unless you've been living under a rock, facebook's privacy concerns?

Theres even word they track eye movement and behavior to better target purchases from you. Facebook are the kings of influential psychology, go watch The Great Hack on netflix - if you see an ad enough times in specific ways and you're in a specific category of people, you WILL purchase what they're selling you. Its fact. There are billions of dollars invested in this fact.

          • +4

@wise penny: You can both embrace new technology and be concerned about privacy. In fact many of the most tech savvy users (software engineers) are far more concerned about privacy than the average user.

        • +3

I think you mean google as well

      • i believe facebook harvest your data and possible reseller them or make it to good use with marketing which is why they're able to make this headset so cheap. the headset will be able to track all your movements and your gameplay behaviour, there are also multiple front-facing cameras for tracking but unsure if these images get sent back to base for "research". regarding PSN/Nintendo/Xbox game account, these don't link to your personal life like oculus does with facebook, so if facebook algorithm detects that your facebook account seems suspicious and blocks your facebook account than your game will also be blocked

i have read that if you reactivate your facebook account so that you could link it to your oculus your facebook account will also be flaged

      • +4

Facebooks business is to build profiles of their users by harvesting their data. Sure, many (if not most) companies will collect and leverage customer data to an extent, but it's Facebooks bread and butter. Because of that, a lot of people are trying to distance themselves from Facebook as much as possible. So some people will find it a bit frustrating that you pretty much have to agree to feed into Facebooks data collection in order to use this VR device. Even more so that Facebook replaced a perfectly good and separate login system so they can tie users of this device back into their profiles. Many also see it as a bit of a grim reaffirmation of where Facebook wants to steer VR.

      • +1

I've read (can't find source, not verified) that fb can detect with high confidence who you are through your physical movements - they are not only collecting eye tracking, but body movements as well.

If your fb account gets banned you lose access to all your content and your $400 headset becomes a fancy paperweight. It's kinda like China and their social credit system.

Customer service for hardware is rolled into fb's general customer service which sounds like a nightmare.

Saying that, I have a Quest 1 and it is fricken awesome. Going forward, I'd rather start buying steamVR games so I i'm not locked into fb hardware in the future.

        • Just create a new facebook account to use with oculus and don't by any game from the store. You should be able to sideload most of the games.

My Facebook account is so barren already that it looks like a burner account. Max privacy set, no photos of myself, friends, family, events, gatherings , trips. I pretty much only use it for BSS and some user groups.

I use IRL for talking to fam/friends etc.
I don't have an issue AT THE MOMENT with what they are doing as I clearly fall through the cracks, they can data mine me for all I care, the most I'd probably be asked to buy is shit I walk into when using the headset.
Some groups I'm in on FB have the same concerns as here but the irony is that the same people live their life in a bubble for all to see their every movement already through check-ins, tags, photos, Instagram etc etc.

My biggest concern with FB is their reluctance to offer family sharing of purchases. I have a son who I will not setup a FB account ever in order for him to play, as we're considering a second headset. Allow local sharing of purchases or limited use of purchases, then I'm more satisfied (yes, there have been very vague allusions to something like this but I want concrete confirmation)

      • I've lost 2 Facebook accounts due to bans for who knows what. 1 of the accounts I didn't even get to use and it got banned. My friends account got banned for who knows what and all she posted was photos of her kids and family.

Facebook uses automated systems to ban your account if they think it's suspect even though it's not and you can't unban them because Facebook support is non existent.

If you want to be stupid enough to buy a product with this sort of tyranny and lack of support then go right ahead and waste your money. For me, I'll spend a little bit more on a proper headset that I own, not Facebook.

    • +1

Yep, heard a lot of reviews on this lately, and FB is what kills this for me and many I've heard from.

I haven't found a jump-in point for VR just yet. Always had the PC to drive it, just looking to balance out ergonomics, quality, and price of entry (especially considering limited exclusive titles). The Oculus is the closest yet, but not with FB.

But hopefully this is a lurch forward for VR for performance:price and we see better iterations.

    • +6

wow… looks like strong resistance… Probably time to research the concerns around this issue before I say another word

      • +1

A lot of people have been locked out of their oculus headset because facebook banned their accounts, even those who came from the quest 1. When they contact oculus they say facebook is not the same company as Oculus so its their problem and to contact them. Problem is you cannot contact facebook and it is also against anti consumer law to deny people access to purchased hardware and software (bought on quest store). There has to be a class action to come for this.

The headset itself is awesome, huge step up from the 1st but they need to ditch this BS facebook account requirement. To deny someone

at facebook, you are the product.

    • Took them 8 days to fix my Oculus login after I linked the 2.

There is stock available now direct from Amazon Australia for $479.

  • Just had to return mine because of a faulty cooling fan :( hope the replacement gets here soon because its a great unit!

  • -2

Looks awesome but im just not sure it can compete with a $500 console from a value stand point - fine if you have a pc and use the link, but if not it seems like there are many 10 or so great games and the rest of ok….?

    • +4

I don't think most people are buying Quests as a "console replacement", but more as a different/new type of gaming.

    • +5

VR in general is just a luxury, don't think it's even vaguely trying to compete with a console in terms of overall gaming value.

    • +2

VR isn't just gaming, and it's difficult to describe it to someone. It's better if you just try it yourself. The best way to describe VR for me, it makes you feel "present" in the game/VR experience. With games in front of a monitor, you're just an observer, VR makes you feel there and part of the experience.

      • "VR isn't just gaming" what else do people use it for frequently? I always wondered how it worked with a movie, with good headphones in also

        • A friend of mine uses VR solely for movie watching, YouTube etc.

He loves putting the goggles on and completely shutting out the world around him….

        • Mate you really have to try it. It is such a different experience and is in no way competing with consoles. It is its own thing.
You can game, watch movies, watch porn, have VR conferences, used in industries such as Home builders to show people through the house. It has a lot of uses and is close to hitting the mainstream with this headset.

      • Look at Facebook Horizon..

      • I though VR was crap until I bought a Quest just to try it. It blew my mind. Games aren't great, but the experience is awesome. You need to try to understand it.
I was a VR denier until a couple of months ago. Now some of my friends are buying one after trying it at home (demo + Creed) . When I tried the quest plugged to the pc, it wasn't so great. Virtual Desktop is a must.
The technology has a long way to go for gaming and business use, but as it is today it's worth to buy a Quest. Specially the 64gb which is really cheap.

  • +8

I believe The Quest 2 has now been rooted so should not be long before you can bypass the Facebook requirement.

  • +7

Why would you wait 3 weeks for delivery from the US, have to deal with US warranty and get a US power plug, just to save less than $12?

  • Also great if you use Sidequest for more app/experiences! I currently have a game up there at the moment :)

  • +3

https://readyhackerone.com/defending-the-right-to-repair-for… - Jail breaking the Oculus to remove facebook login
    Still wouldn't buy one.

  • Any Black Friday sale for the device and the apps on the Oculus Store last year?

    • For the Quest and Rift S headsets, there was.

  • +1

im not sure if this has been discussed before but has anyone successfully created another dummy FB account just to use Oculus and that FB doesnt delete their dummy account?

    • +2

I don't know if this helps, but I always had a second account with the same alias name on my main, that only had like 3 friends on it, created at the same time years ago as a backup (my original account got banned by FB for God knows what reason, they requested ID and I never bothered with it). When I got my Quest 2, I locked that account down privacy wise, changed it to my real name, and I haven't been banned since. I can't imagine you'd be banned for creating a similar account, but it would need to be with your real name if you plan to buy anything from the Oculus store. For me, the only thing I needed to buy was Virtual Desktop.

Supposedly the wave of people being instantly auto banned was due to US elections and Facebook trying to avoid having bot accounts being created, but I'm not sure if they fixed that whole fiasco yet or not. You'd hope they did, seeing as these headsets will sell like hotcakes come Christmas…

  • +5

So I figured I'd drop my 2c in this conversation , seeing as there's a lot of Facebook discussion and not much about the actual headset.

For anyone with PSVR or Quest 1, or any OLED headset, if you plan to get one of these just realize that the black levels are horrible, and that's not an exaggeration either. You get used to it rather quick, but it's one of the first things I noticed coming from PSVR.

The resolution is awesome though, much higher than the PSVR and most others headsets around the similar price range. I think the only thing that could compare is the Samsung Odyssey+ if anyone grabbed one back when those were selling around $400, but they're long out of production now. Native Oculus games look great on it thanks to the new higher resolution too.

Controllers are a bit meh, I feel that the analog sticks are a bit small and they feel cheap. Honestly, the entire product feels a little "cheap", definitely not the best plastics throughout. There are lots of areas that it seems were cut in an attempt to bring the price down to what it is, and if you've used any other premium VR headset or even the Quest 1, you'll notice that too. Definitely pass on that $80+ Elite Strap too, there's absolutely nothing Elite about it, except you get to join an elite club of Q2 users with a strap that's cracked in the exact same place.

As for anyone who wants wireless PCVR over Virtual Desktop - just do it. This thing is awesome for VD, way better than the Quest 1 due to better internal hardware, especially the wireless modem which has a much higher speed over 5GHz compared to the Q1. It's still recommended to have a router or access point in the same room for the best experience, but you can get a good 5GHz router off Amazon for under $100 and just run it in AP mode.

Overall, I think it's definitely worth the price, but it really is let down by the Facebook requirement, and changes to cut down cost that make it feel a bit cheap… hopefully the FB login can be removed now that root access is achieved, without removing the ability to update the headset's firmware. As far as I know it's the only headset for wireless PCVR that's actually good currently, but hopefully there's some competition on the horizon.

    • Is the HP reverb worth it for more than double the price? Also, you reckon the quest 2 would likely be discounted further during Black Friday?

      • I doubt it'll come down in price for Black Friday, but anything's possible… can't imagine it being a big discount if any, though. As for the new Reverb G2, I'd say it really depends on what you want out of VR… Reverb G2 has higher resolution, no need to keep the battery charged, no extra overhead on GPU/CPU needed to encode video for Link/VD like the Quest 2 does, no latency as it's a direct feed from GPU, etc. They're aimed at entirely different markets, and priced accordingly.

Personally I would hold off and wait to see what's coming on the VR horizon if I was going to drop $1000AUD+ on a headset, seeing as technology for them hasn't really evolved much besides resolution. Once we start seeing 2K+ OLED/displays that can compete with OLED for blacks/contrast with no smearing, 90-120Hz, wider FOV like the Pimax headsets, then I'd consider it. For now, I think the Quest 2 is good enough to hold me over until that happens, if that makes sense. If you have more money than you know what to do with or have other specific needs out of a VR headset, then compared to everything else the Reverb G2 would be a good choice.

  • +4

Why wouldn't you just get local stock?
$12 more but you get Australian adapter, Australian warranty and delivery in a few days opposed to a few weeks

  • any thoughts if this will come down a lot with black friday

    • It won't. It is new, at a good price, and extremely popular too. There may be a deal though, just not a lot off.

  • Is it better to buy from amazon or direct from occulus for an extra $12? Which has better warranty?

    https://www.oculus.com/quest-2/

    • Amazon, and buy it from Amazon AU if you do (easier warranty support if needed). Warranty/customer service should you ever need it will be a hundred times better through Amazon support than it will through Oculus/Facebook.

  • Usually despatched within 1 - 2 months.

    There goes your Christmas present!

    • Looks like the lead up time has increased to when i posted it

Everyone arguing about fb privacy and I'm just here wondering if the jailbreak means 3rd party apps are supported. Would be a shame if all my high seas games won't work anymore.

Relax about fb profiling you, shadow profiles exists already. If you're not giving info to fb, your aunty most likely has.

    • I'm under the impression you can run rift games on it, which others would you run?

      • Just talking about the bootleg quest games I have. Last time I read they don't allow side loading on the new one.

        • Not sure where you read that, but it def isn't right. I've sideloaded a few games to test them on my Quest 2 and they work perfectly fine, method seems to be the same as on the Quest 1. Some games don't work properly on the Quest 2, I'm sure you can find the compatibility list if you know where to find the games. :)
