Qantas Gift Vouchers Earn 10 Frequent Flyer Points Per $ Spent

230

Qantas are offering 10 points per $ spent on gift vouchers until Xmas, on top of what bonus point your credit card gives for Qantas spend. This is a great way to avoid the Qantas CRedit card fee as well.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. Taxes etc when redeeming are not included but there is no CC fee to pay for these.
2.You can only redeem one voucher per flight/booking and the name on the voucher must match the traveller.

Vouchers can be purchased from http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/gift-vouchers/globa…

I think it's time I give myself a present LOL.

Gift Vouchers for flights are available from A$50 to A$500 in A$50 denominations, and can be redeemed for adult base fares (excluding surcharges, fees and taxes) of one-way or return Qantas domestic flights or Qantas international flights departing Australia. Multi-city bookings are excluded.
Surcharges, fees and taxes apply to all fares. These must be paid with a credit card by the recipient when they redeem the Gift Voucher. Qantas does not charge a Card Payment fee on Gift Voucher purchases or redemptions.
Select from a range of designs and include your own customised message. Plus you can create a voucher for up to nine people.

  • Sounds good. No CC fee on taxes etc, but what about the balance of a booking? ie. $100 flight but only $50 voucher?

    • Qantas does not charge a card fee on redemptions, which would seem to indicate that includes the shortfall for fares as well as taxes!

      • So I could "gift" myself $200.

Then when I book a 2x $117 flight, I can pay $34 (and any taxes) with my credit card with no $7.70 surcharge?

        • That will be great - just get a $50 voucher to pay for the $8000.00 ticket for a family of four, with the rest on CC!

        • +3

Thats the way it seems to work, not sure why you would just buy a $50 voucher if your spending $8000 though, when a $500 voucher would do the same thing and earn 5000 extra points, SYD-MEL award flight is only 8000 points!

  • Does anyone know if status credits and points (as per normal qantas fares) are available when booking with a gift voucher?

    • yes.

  • Only applies to fares not taxes and surcharges.

    • Pretty much you are putting a deposit on a fare and paying the rest later with a credit card but no CC fee, saving $7.50 domestically or $30 internationally.

        plus getting the extra points.

Excluding surcharges, fees and taxes? That sounds awful, a gift voucher that won't allow you to pay for an entire fare. Where is the logic in that? The money has already been paid in the form of a gift voucher, why would you not be able to spend the entire amount to actually receive a ticket? Using these vouchers you cannot give a person a free gifted flight.

This sounds almost as bad as the Borders gift certificate fiasco where they forced people to spent double the amount of the gift voucher in order to actually redeem the voucher.

I'd be pretty angry if somebody gave me a $100 gift voucher that I used to pay for a $99 domestic flight, but was only allowed to use $38 of it then I had to pay $61 in order to actually redeem my gift voucher.

So the way I look at it, the example of a one way fare melbourne to sydney

    1. Find the fare to Sydney (example $70 ex tax)
    2. Buy the $100 voucher (no txn fee)
    3. Buy ticket, pay taxes on woolworths CC (assume $30 tax)

    $100 voucher = 1000 points
Flight to Sydney = 1000 points
    Points on CC = 100

Saving on CC fee = $7.70

Total points: 2100 for $100 spend and a flight, lower booking fee

    Caveats:

-Qantas is more expensive. A true ozbargainer would always pricematch Jetstar vs Tiger (An altruistic ozbargainer would actually fly Tiger to maintain competition). With this in mind, it's only really good value if you planned to fly QF in the first place. JQ/DJ/Tiger might be cheaper!

-If you can't establish the fare/fee breakdown, there's potential for buying the wrong voucher amount. A workaround could possibly be going on the frequent flyer site and trying to book the same sector on points. The incremental dollar value of the tax required would then be displayed

I just noticed another thing: "or Qantas international flights departing Australia."

It seems you can only use the voucher to pay for flights departing Australia, buut not the return leg. That's a great gift, a one-way ticket out of the country! Here my friend, I'll pay for you to leave the country, but not to come back. Good riddance!

    • +1

Well it says return tickets are Ok too as long as it's departing from Australia. I agree on one thing though, it does smell funny. Too many restrictions makes you wonder what do they know that we don't. Another SALE coming later excluding vouchers ?

"Here my friend, I'll pay for you to leave the country, but not to come back. Good riddance!"

OK thanks Greenie, I will take you up on your offer :D

  • When do they expire?

Sounds like a good way to get extra QFF points?

    • +1

They have a 12 month expiry date.

      • Thank you!

  • Has anyone tried this deal? It seems strange that you buy the vouchers through Qantas.com, but redeem the points through Qantas.net.

how much is your point worth to you?

based on the calculator on qantas website seems like 1 point is worth $0.0074

So, hypothetically, if you were to fly qantas and possibly accrue 10,000points using this method thats worth approximately $74. ie that is the amount you should be spending upto for the benefit of these points.

But when the flights of eg Jetstar (price matched) vs Qantas etc has an overall difference of $200+ (return trip) it does not become worth it just for the points.

    • I think the bargain here is mostly for the international travellers or those who will fly Qantas and Qantas only. This allows people to double dip on the points AND more importantly SAVE on the CREDIT CARD FEE ($7.70 for domestic flights and $30 for international per person)

      edit:
To think about it… this would actually allow you to double your points if flying those flights that only give you 1000 points like SYD-MEL, MEL-ADE, SYD-BRIS, etc, considering prices for the tickets start from $94.97 ex tax each you can easily buy $100 vouchers and double your points!

IMO true bargainers would only use this promo to maximise their points and not as a promo to lure them into flying Qantas over other airlines.

      • Considering Qantas historically have their best sales after Christmas, a couple of $50 vouchers could save you a CC fee and allow you to pick up extra points on the cheap fares, for instance:

Brisbane to Sydney $69 sale fare, using a voucher is saving at least 10% by not having a CC fee while allowing you to get points on the credit card and 500 bonus points on the voucher.

        • yea but just be careful you cant pay the tax with it. So not sure how much tax is in the $69.

      • A great way to save the credit card fee imo is to use Flight Centre. Get them to price beat, and the price beat excludes the CC fee.

I booked 2200 worth of flights with them on my amex, didn't pay a fee, got it at the Qantas price and got some flight center gift vouchers too.

  • I just bought voucher for myself only and made a booking with accompaniment.
But the voucher redemption booking system could not make a booking together with others.
Need to book separately if I wanted to travel together with redemption.

    • So I guess you probably won't be sitting together? Pretty Awful deal.

      • qantas online seat selection for the win.

  • I usually fly from Broome-melb return twice a year, total cost is usually ~$400-$500 each way.

If I buy a $500 voucher and I pick up a flight on special for say $250, does the remaining $250 remain on the voucher, do they issue me a new voucher, or is the remaining value on the voucher lost?

EDIT - Nevermind, found the answer deep in their help section:

    Question
Can I use part of my flights gift voucher and save the remainder for another booking?

    Answer
No. It must be wholly redeemed in one transaction for an adult fare of equal or higher value, on a one-way or return Qantas operated flight from or within Australia. Multi-city bookings excluded.

  • Last time I used a Gift Voucher, I swore i'd never touch them again.

As clearly stated, it can only be used on the base fare. Yes, it enables you to get around the credit card surcharge, but last time I used these, you could only redeem them via telephone (not available for online bookings) so you're slugged with the phone booking fee as well.

That may have changed, but i'd be wary.

I fly a lot, and the bonus points are not worth the hassle IMHO.
