  • These any good?

    • +21

Bought one of these because I was sick of using cheap kmart style AC pedestal fans which are louder when in use (I wanted to use this in the bedroom at night). DC makes it whisper quiet.

Natural mode is cool, it simulates wind so it's not a consistent flow of air but randomised. The timer is useful, and you can adjust the swing in the app.

I integrated mine within Home Assistant so I can trigger it easily with a xiaomi zigbee button I've got attached to my bed which controls lights and music. Three taps puts the fan on for 120 minutes.

The battery is useful, as I can move it easily to another room, however it lacks a battery level indicator (it just lacks the hardware to track the battery inside the unit apparently). But I can get a 4 days worth (6hrs a day) of use off the battery at 30% fan strength.

    • Used for 2 months so far and it's pretty good and very quiet.

    • Love mine, cannot recommend it enough

    • If you value a quiet fan (even at max power) that you can move around when its charged, its a great buy.

Only annoyance is connecting the app, but i hardly use it anyway.

      No regrets from me.

    Seems like all time lowest.

Still kinda hard to justify against the basic $10 no frills fans though?

    • +1

      AmEx offer takes $20 off.

    • +1

      I think this is
      battery operated
      Wifi/app controlled

Not too say the price is cheap..

      • It’s also quieter - I just want a fan that can move wind better than the $10 one … I guess better is subjective though hm

    • +1

Nah I'd 100% recommend it over cheap crappo ones. Really quiet and the battery feature is surprisingly useful, have moved it around the house a few times

  • +1

I have the one without the battery and love it - whisper quiet. super low power and looks good. I tested it on a power meter and never got over 5 watts even on full. Was torn between this an Vornado but glad I went for this as IOM Vornado is overpriced and mainly marketing rather than function.

It does work with google home but from what I've tried it is only for on and off, no other functions. Mi app allows more function, eg 100 speed settings, natural breeze setting etc.

    • I have 2 of these and use with Alexa, we can voice activate on/off and fan power level (1-4). Haven't figured out the voice command for rotation activation but we don't really use that feature.

      • I've got the other model also (1X) and it's great. Got for 89$ price protection claim dick Smith price.

Voice control for On off works with Google home, what is the command for fan level?

I've got a vornado 633dc I had first in the living room, is very directional so have to adjust the direction a fair bit (usually just point it at me not Up against a wall what it's designed for).

Would probably just get another of these next time

        • +1

For Alexa and fan on/off I say: "Alexa, turn on fan (or fan 2).
For Alexa and fan power level I say: "Alexa, fan - 75%" or "Alexa, fan 2 - 50%" etc
Pretty sure that voice command power level is only in 4 steps i.e. 25% 50% 75% 100%. Given any other percentage and Alexa will round it to the nearest increment of 25.

          • +1

@MeagerDollarBucks: Cheers will try that. Percentage works for smart lights so hopefully the same.
ps I've noticed even though there are 100 'steps' on the fan speed, there's a bit jump either side of 75% doesn't seem that variable near the top end. Great fan though!

            Edit don't think Google understands

  • Bought the new version of this fan (3) during Black Friday and still waiting for it to ship. Just beware of that if you’re considering the 3 over the 2S (I know the 3 is marked as presale now, but on Black Friday it was “1-2 weeks”)

    • They finally put in a battery indicator in that revision by looks of it too. My biggest gripe when trying to charge and not knowing where it's at.

      • is the gripe worth $50 though?

I'm tossing up between getting the 2S or the 3, feels like the 3 won't be discounted any time soon.

        • +1

Probably not worth the extra $50.

          • @neo: Nah, the 2S is awesome and whilst an indicator would be nice, not $50 nice.

    • And I’ve just finally got an email back from them to say it’s delayed til Jan 18 (previous email last week said it was going to ship “imminently”)

  • It's the 3 that comes with a remote, right? Could be a deal breaker for me.

    • +1

You can buy a remote for the 2s for about 12 bucks on aliexpress

      • Oh, awesome - thanks.

      • +3

Don't forget with a smart phone or google home etc, you have a remote for free.

  • +2

Got my 2s yesterday, love it. Now have 3x DC pedestal fans around the house, 1x Kogan, 1x Arlec from Bunnings and the 2s.

The 2s is the clear winner for me, it looks far more stylish, you can adjust the angle of the rotation so that it only rotates a smaller angle and not "waste" air blowing into spaces where nobody is sitting.

It also has a child lock to prevent kids from turning the fan on and off using the hardware button, which is useful. (becomes app control only)

    • +1

      Woo a multi-DC fan owner … :P

Can you provide a quick comparison about noise and air movement then? Quietest is my priority but it's hard to really judge when most people only own one product and say "yeah it's quiet" and everyone's hearing is different.

      • +2

Xiaomi is the quietest overall, but doesn't move as much air at full speed as the other two in my opinion. It's not far off though - perhaps the smaller blades are the reason.

Having said that, for a large bedroom, it moves more than enough air, so not really a concern for me. I very rarely have any of them at full speed.

If i were purchasing 3x new, they'd all be the Xiaomi - no doubt about it. It also looks far better. It's a shame it took so long for the price to come down to this!

    • +3

Nobody mentions this but its also super easy to take the fan grill off to clean dust. I have dust allergies and needed to do this for the first time recently. 1 screw, rotate and its done. 60 seconds without knowing what I was doing.

    • How is the airflow at max speed ? I have a couple of Kogan DC fans, and quite happy with the airflow, how does this compare ?

  • +1

Although its battery based, can you just leave the cord plugged in if you want to use it like a normal corded fan?

    • +1

      Yes, you can.

    • I’d also like to know. I’d imagine yes - as over time that battery is probable going to degrade especially if charging and discharging -

  • +2

Fan is good but I will not recommend to buy from kogan, as i made the order on mid November, and was told that I will receive early December but then get delay til 18 December, and I called up this morning and again get delay until 18 Jan 2021.

So I will say if you want to order it, get from somewhere else

    • +1

I agree that Kogan are useless scumbags but not much choice on this one, not seeing the S model for less than about $200 anywhere else.

Guess the battery makes shipping costly.

    • Mine was from Kogan. Ordered 29/11 and arrived yesterday - so yes. Very slow. Still worth it though!

  • Sorry, I am guessing, this used to be $79? not a long time ago, isn't that right?

    • +1

Probably thinking of the Pedestal Fan 2 (no S), which doesn't have the battery

  • thanks OP waiting for this deal. bought a $100 Kogan gift card from suncorp app.

  • +1

I've been using a 2S for a year now and the battery has seriously degraded over time.

It started off lasting a day, but now it'll barely last half a day on 1/2 to 3/4 speed.

A battery indicator would be a big benefit, even if it is just via the app.

All up, it's a good fan, whisper quiet, just expensive.. But with most things, you get what you pay for.

    • +1

That sounds pretty crap, probably enough to make a warranty claim if you can be bothered

      • No way. Batteries degrade over time, 0 chance they don't claim it's normal use.

    • What was your consumption and recharge schedule?

I just want to know if you kept it plugged in normally and used on battery seldomly?

or you wait until battery fully discharged then you plugged in?

Bought one and I am trying to find out best way to prolong the life of the battery, that's all.

      thank you in advance.

      • -5

Keeping it plugged in as often as possible, and using the battery as little as possible will keep the battery in best health and give you the longest life. Same goes for a laptop and phone

        • Lolwot. If you're not trolling, you need to do some research. That is literally the worst thing you can do.

Probably unavoidable with an item like this though.

          • -1

@justtoreply: Not trolling and plenty of research already done. Li-on cells have a certain number of cycles, and using devices on their battery eats away at these cycles thus reducing the battery capacity. Using devices plugged in instead of using their battery preserves these cycles hence giving you the longest life on li-on cells.

My work iPhone which sits on charge all day still has 99% battery capacity after 3 years. My daily iPhone which only gets charged at night only has 81% capacity after 2 years.

I’d like to know why you think otherwise

            • @antik: The 1x good pal
Don't see a need for portable big fan to carry around the flat

      • Lithium batteries keep best at 40% however this won't be easy without a battery indicator. It's also inconvenient unless you're putting your fan away for the winter. If it discharges too much and stays at virtually nothing for too long, the battery will effectively die.

    • That's not great to hear. Warranty claim time.

Probably wouldn't be too difficult to replace the battery either, but shouldn't have to this soon.

Thoughts on the rest of the fan?

      • It’s a good fan, better airflow and quieter than the Kmart ones, but the battery has deteriorated with use.

I normally use it next to my desk during the day, then plug it in at night after work. But recently it will only last until after lunchtime with the same fan speed.

The blades are clean of dust, so I can only pinpoint it to a dying battery.

when can you cancel the "(Free Delivery with Kogan First) @ Kogan"?

is it OK to cancel it on same day of the order?
    thanks.

    • You can cancel it 5 seconds after ordering if you want

    • +1

Thinking of doing the same, but I wonder if its best to cancel after boxing day just in case there are other deals..

  • Doesn't come in black hey

    • +1

      no it doesnt hey

      • ?

  • +2

Thanks OP. Subscribed to First for the 14day trial. Also used code APPLOVE to get $5 off through the kogan app for first time users…

  • +1

Bought one in Nov and they have not shipped the order yet, avoid kogan if you can.

  • +1

I want one, but I think it might actually be too quite for me lol. I sleep with a fan on every night purely for the ambient background noise which helps me sleep, but this fan may be counter productive for me?

  • +1

    I have this a vornado 660 and Dyson hp04

    This is my favourite

The vornado is so God damn loud
The Dyson feels like it barely blows any air and becomes quite loud of the loudest setting. Now it's making a high pitch noise which is seems to be common according to YouTube. Dyson support are clueless about it.

  • I have one, highly rated.

  • Ordered one! Estimated dispatch date is Dec 28…

  • Thanks op ordered one.

Mine arrived but it didn't come with an Australian power cord, which is annoying.

    • Same here. I did get an update that now a power cable is being shipped from overseas …
I was surprised that this item came quicker than my order from start of December .. it's like a lottery ticket, chances to get it quick are slim. (My other order is now expected to be shipped end of February … 3 months after purchasing).

    • Ah yes, the Aussie power cord is shipped separately.

      • luckily mine came at the same time but that's pot luck (got the 1X).
It's also black instead of white, you may have that type of cable lying around.
don't know much whether these are really DC or at least not 100 steps - there's a big jump between 3 and 4 (once you go to 73 or so it's almost the same as 4). Good fans though

      • I'm still waiting for the power cord.

  • Mine also arrived today, lucky I had a few of those AU power cables spare. Bloody awesome unit. Got the power meter out and tested it against a Kmart Fan. Kmart on max: 40W, Xiaomi on max: 7W + stronger and quieter

    • +1

Sorry 11W, not 7W on max

  • Really nice fan, so quiet!! Thanks Op. is there a way to see battery level?

    • No.. My biggest complaint about it!
