When is the new model out?

    • +3

      This is the new model

      • Yes more than one year new. 2019 model

      • -2

        Isn't this the 2019 model?

        • Given they've released in 2015, 2017 and 2019 you'll be waiting at least another year for another release.

          • +1

            @eccles30:

waiting at least another year for another release.

            2021 is 2 weeks ago…

            • +2

@jv: They'll announce it near the end of the year (if at all) but you won't get your hands on it til 2022. I haven't even heard rumours about whether they are even working on one yet.

              • -3

                • +8

@jv: Gee I was trying to be helpful but sure whatever, wait until next month when 2021 hits and they will surely sell you the 2021 version.

@eccles30: Jv looks like he’s bored and in need of some attention.

              • @eccles30: Agree, when 8K becomes a bit more mature maybe. Otherwise what more do you want aside from a little more RAM maybe?

This is the beast of the best

  • Now to return the ones I just bought of Amazon!

    • is Amazon will charge Delivery cost if you just simple change mind?

      • They have always been giving me free returns but I am a prime member.

        • +1

I was charged $7 for return (change of mind) even I am prime member. :(

            • @shaoaxiao: I always use the email option to contact them first and ask if they can generate a free return label for me and they do so.

Also I dont return stuff often, maybe once every 6 months.

What do people buy this for, is it Plex server?

Nvidia GeForce Now isn’t available in Australia..

      • +7

It's for 4K disk rips. Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos.

        • +1

This. This is legit the only device I could get to handle my rips. 2 laptops, mi box and an xbox all couldnt handle it and plex won't play anything on my desktop for some reason nor do I want a big tower in my lounge room.

          • @JAKEBAB: Curious which Remuxes are you talking about? Just wanted to download it and test on my setup.

            • @Axelstrife: Anything in 4k.
              13 hours
              The incredible hulk 2008
              Transformers 2007
              Jurassic world fallen order
              Aquaman

These all would have bad judder and audio desync.

              • @JAKEBAB: My Shield is hit and miss with my rips, I get a lot of judder (motion smoothing on the tv fixes it) and audio sometimes isn't syncing 100% (I can adjust it to make it better). Also seems to play mp4/mkv files better than if I use .iso rips (my wdtv plays everything perfectly. I'd still use it if the hdmi port wasn't buggered lol).

              • @JAKEBAB: Bit late, but i downloaded The Incredible Hulk 2008 4K Remux HDR10 52.2GB streaming it locally direct play for the video but it's transcoding the audio unfortunately, I don't see any issues though using my older Roku Ultra 4660RW 2017 model

However attempting to use my LG smart TV plex app that's only a couple years old the thing buffers constantly, ive also had buffers when using a 1080p Remux movie so i thing that's just all-round terrible device haha.

                https://i.imgur.com/nBVHx4N.png

My Gigabyte brix i5 is only about 3-4% CPU usage for plex with this movie

unsure what issue you had but this is my experience with my setup.

          • @JAKEBAB: did you try plex or kodi on xbox?

            • @Mooncakes: Only plex, didn't really see the point of kodi since it can't do audio passthrough on xbox. It would even buffer on 1080p stuff which no other devices had problems with, it was just the 4k stuff that crippled the others.

      • +1

Depends on use case. The Shield has AI upscaling superior to GoogleTV. It's also more powerful which comes in handy for local high bitrate 4K. But otherwise if those 2 are not a factor the Google TV is definitely the value pick. I have 3 shields at the moment, a VodaTV, and a GoogleTV.

        • Honestly can't tell the difference between ai on or off with my 1080p stuff.

          • @JAKEBAB: Yeah, that is 1080p and probably decent bit rate. For older 720p and 480p stuff it can be quite noticeable. I have a few shows on my NAS that cant really get elsewhere and were dubious DVD quality and its definitely useful. It's niche for sure though.

This is truth, my cheap EKO Android TV does all this packed in.

    • +1

Also works as a SteamLink. In my experience it seems to work better than the actual Steamlink.

    Excellent price!

Xbox cloud streaming (Project xCloud Preview) has just launched in Australia, and can be used on the Shield - app and shortcut below for anyone who wants to test it out:

    • Oh cool! I tried to sign in/up and it lands on a black page I can’t seem to sign up :-(

      • +1

        pretty sure it was limited.

  • Thanks OP, have grabbed one

  • Is it possible to get Apple TV+ to run through this?
Got a year for free but my TV's are old so don't have the Apple app and don't really want to buy the Apple tv box.

  • I cancelled my Amazon order only to realise the difference was only $2.38 because I dont have Amex or Westpac credit card.
I did sign up for that free shipping so I have to make sure I cancelled.
And then I forgot I can get $5 if I use the referral link which I didn’t so missed out on that.
My ozbargaining is very rusty. Wouldn’t have cancelled the Amazon one if delivery wasn’t until 13 Jan. I’m hoping this will arrive sooner.
Thanks for this post though. Been wanting to get one of these.

    • This from Kogan will arrive weeks earlier if you say the one at Amazon wasn't due to ship until 13 Jan. At least Kogan has it in stock and it's still official Australian stock. It will probably ship out tomorrow and arrive by the end of the year.

      • That’s what I’m hoping for because I’m on leave until 15 Jan. Haha. So getting it two weeks earlier would be good to binge watch something. I mean I can do it now but it’s not the same. Lol

  • I dunno what this is for? Gaming? If so PlayStation is better? Streaming device? Plenty of options android box AppleTV, Foxtel box.

PC gaming? Better off getting a dedicated PC or laptop for it?

Media home theater? A NUC or NAS transcoding is better? Maybe even a raspberry Pi setup is cheaper

    • Fair but the combined cost of a PS, an Android TV/Foxtel box, PC gaming rig, NUC, NAS, Pi is also significantly more than this. For casual use the Shield is a beast for Pi-style retrogaming, casual Android games, streaming games from a dedicated gaming rig, consuming media via the usual Android TV apps, running KODI or PLEX client etc. All in one small form-factor box.

If you're super into any one of the areas to the exclusion of others then getting the dedicated 'right' device might be for you but as a jack-of-all-trades set top box these are pretty hard the beat.

      • I see but it's like a device that really doesn't do the best of everything more like jack of all trades…..

I'm not sure about gaming on this can you run PC games?

It depends how much you wanna spend

        • I see but it's like a device that really doesn't do the best of everything more like jack of all trades…..

Not really, it's an Android TV box. It excels at being an Android TV box.

I'm not sure about gaming on this can you run PC games?

Not really, it's an Android TV box. It's main use is to run Android (TV) apps.

It depends how much you wanna spend

Not really. This is more if you want the best Android TV box there is and price is a secondary factor. There are cheaper options out there in the Android TV box sphere but they're not as good.

        • well people having been playing cyperpunk fine with no issues so it has the capacity to play games if you want

          • -1

@ohtaek: Not natively. Either streamed over GeForce Now (via the internet) or from a local gaming PC.
You can do the same on a Nintendo Switch or Android phone/tablet.

            • -1

@theguyrules: yes thanks for your 2c, i already knew that so not sure why you needed to reply to me…

              • -1

@ohtaek: To clarify to anyone reading your vague comment that you can't play Cyberpunk natively on a Shield.

  • Anyone in this forum using Nvidia Shield TV Pro or IPTV streaming ?

Would this somehow stream my pc games to another room's pc?

My in wall 20m hdmi decided to die recently

    • +1

Yep, you can use Steam Link and Moonlight Android apps on a shield no problem. Wired ethernet recommended though, Wi-Fi for game streaming can be hit and miss

  • I am wondering about this. I have a smart TV Panasonic 4k OLED. Would there be any benefit to me having this as well? Why?

    • -1

I don't own one, but many people argue that this does better upscaling than any native TV OS. So if you want to watch some downloaded movies in 720p or 1080p, the Shield will upscale it to 4K with better quality than your Panasonic will. All TVs have some sort of upscaling - the simplest method is to just duplicate adjacent pixels. The problem is that it makes the picture look blocky and pixelated. A good upscaler will use some clever algorithms to interpolate adjacent pixels, seeming to add detail that isn't in the original image. On a 4K upscaler this adds some significant processing to each frame, so it requires a powerful processor to do this well. Most smart TVs ship with underpowered CPUs that become obsolete quickly. The Shield has a very powerful processor combined with a clever upscaling algorithm to make your low-res content looker better.

Has anyone actually managed to get this thing to work with a TV tuner in Australia?

    • I have the older version Shield TV working with a HDHomerun tuner. Simple to set up. Works with multiple apps (Plex, Channels, Live Channels, HDHomerun etc.) I haven't heard of any issues using the Shield with TV tuners in Aus?
