Amazing game and story. Very well thought of. Definitely deserve the game of the year award.

No the ‘switch’ was stupid & if this is the level of ‘intellectual’ story writing for games, then story writers have along way to catch the pinnacles in movies (eg: Memento, Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Seven, etc, etc)

      • As in the switch of gameplay between Abby and Ellie? Why stupid?

        • +3

One problem was the game was hyped up prior to the release and Neil initially told fans that in part 2, we will play as Ellie most of the time. People interpreted this as 80-90% of the time. I do wonder whether the acting talents who played Abby and Lev made Neil and/or the writers changed the story to add more of their story in.

When Neil showed the second trailer a year or two before the launch (the one with Abby, Yara and Lev), he should have told the fans that it is a story about Ellie and another character in part 2. Now, the latest promo trailer for LOU II is now showing that (Ellie and Abby).

The fact that Laura Bailey (who played Abby) won the 'best performance' award actually shows the issue. I was really hoping Ashley Johnson (who played Ellie) would win. Anyway, that highlights another problem. You bring in a strong character (played by an acting talent who is more recognised than your original main character), give that character a big portion of the story, you cannot help but wondered whether the meaning of the "Us" part of the Last of Us has changed.

@netsurfer: Just like in the original when everyone complained about playing as Ellie in the first game when all the promotional materials were limited to playing as Joel, right? Right?

And that conspiracy theory level crap about Laura Bailey making Neil change the story etc. Just, wow.
Sounds like something an angry youtuber would come up with.

@fatpizza: About the change of story, I was thinking alone the line of Lev (Ian). Clearly, Lev's story arc is something Neil is really proud of. Question is, do you make Lev being part of Ellie's story or Abby's?

Also, don't get me wrong. Laura is very talented. However, let's look at Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, Gears 5, and The Last of Us Part 2. That's 4 AAA games from both Sony and Microsoft camps. Her reputation and her excellent work is well liked in the industry.

My point is: it is okay to change the direction, but if that direction changes, let the fans know (that the previous statement is no longer accurate). The games took a long time to develop and we know Naughty Dog made games in a collaborative manner so changes do happen. What exactly makes part 2 story so great?

              • +2

@netsurfer: I think the issue you mentioned with the game does not invalidate how good the game is and its storyline. Its more like fans having expectations that aren't met, which is fair enough. But I think the game and storyline itself is still great regardless.

I say that because I play the game purely from a perspective of someone wanting to enjoy the game and the storyline. And I got 100% on all of that front. I don't really read much on what's been discussed prior to the game, so I haven't got a lot of expectations about it - apart from expecting a great experience.

If anything the storyline is very good and heighten the depth of the game and the meanings behind it. I really like how they add another dimension to the characters. Makes you think of who the heroes in the story really is. I think they did really well with the character development in this game.

My only complaint is that Ellie and Abby character sounds too similar during the gameplay (like their little commentaries). If I close my eyes I probably couldn't tell which is which.

Only to you. For a game that's suppose to be "Last of Us" there are sure more people than infected in the game. It was the Walking Dead in game format literally no alteration, you can make Abby Negan and Ellie Rick and no one would bat an eyelid.

      • Well, for a start I'm sure there are many others who enjoy it as much as I did. It did win the best game award after all. And about your second complaint.. that was how the game was on the first one anyway so I don't know why it's a surprise. The game has always put more focus on the people rather than the infected, which is something I appreciated. If I just want to deal with infected I can play Resident Evil or most other zombie games out there.

I can see why you compare it with Walking Dead, but while the story concept is similar, the experience is different because Walking Dead is not a game you get to play in first person and be part of the story… well there is that game, but I haven't play it.. though I'm sure it's vastly different to TLOU

PS: Just in case, I didn't neg anyone

Sure there are other people who share the same opinion but your comment puts all of us in the same umbrella, but "best game award after all." Why did you even use the video game awards? They are 90% of journalist and 10% of viewer contribution. That's how the scores are aligned. This means the journalists have and will vote differently from the public (they've been attacking people who play games too much) and this can be seen in the player's choice award which goes to Ghost of Tushima.

"first one anyway so I don't know why it's a surprise"

Sure you have a point BUT this is the second game, there are more people in the second game then there are in the first game to kill and the people have the exact same issues as in the first game. This is area of disbelief and ruins the world you essentially got the same game as the first but with more people. The other series expand the area, if they take place in the same world, they would expand (take place in a city instead of a mansion) or be in a different part of the country the last of us II is in the same area . The later seasons of the walking dead also suffer the same problem as LOTUS.

"PS: Just in case, I didn't neg anyone"

          PS: I didn't plus anyone.

          • @luckydan: Hmm not sure why you think my comments put all of us in the same umbrella. I was purely stating my personal opinion. But anyway, agree to disagree. I'm glad I enjoyed the game. I definitely think anyone wanting to buy the game, to try it out and decide for themselves whether they like it or not. Cos I (along with many more) absolutely had a blast with the game, while some others may not.

            • @John: That's fine It's just your opening comment, sounded more like fact rather than opinion. A lot of companies do this as well, Coles and Woolworths are prime example.

At this rate it will be $10 in a few months…

    • Possibly between 10 and 20 I think. Many SIE's best hits fall in this price range.

Still waiting for the 60FPS PS5 update..

    • People are guessing you will need to wait for The Last of Us Part 2: Factions (which probably will be sold as a multi player DLC) to find out whether Naughty Dog will patch it or released an enhanced / remastered edition and sell it as an ultimate edition (LOU 2 (enhanced/remastered) + Factions).

Hope we get free 60fps update, instead of needing to pay for it.

      • Ahh yeah? That'd suck if we have to pay for a new Enhanced/Remastered Edition.
