  • Thank you OP for your post

I am interested in getting one. I must admit I haven't heard of your brand before. I am curious as to how this thermometer stacks up against the more popular ones available at pharmacies

  • Hi

Is it FCA or FDA approved? Also is it FDA approved or FDA cleared?

To be used in Australia, especially in a commercial setting, it needs to have TGA approval.

The last infrared thermometer I was given (about the same price as this), was basically just a random number generator. I could get a number between 35.3 and 37.8 on the same patient.

That one was also “FDA cleared”

      • Yeah, many fake infrared thermometer are going around and I really despise the people who manufactured these stuffs.
I ended up using the rectal thermometer from Harvey Norman instead for my child.

Also the eBay listing is advertised for “all ages”. There have been many studies showing the inaccuracy of these temporal thermometer, especially in very young children.

This study from 2018 showed a variation of -1.2 to +1.5 in under 6 months. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29373961/

That could be easily the difference between picking up a fever in under 3 months, which could have life and death consequences. (See “late onset sepsis”)

    • Thank you Jimmy for your research.

What would you recommend for a 1 year old baby ?

I would appreciate if you provide link if possible.

What did you end up buying to replace the faulty thermometer

I use a thermometer for work (medical) so the one I bought was quite expensive (and tax deductible). It was also that my clinic provided the disposeable tips, so I wasn't really into buying at a bargain.

For children, you really have to appreciate why you are measuring the temperature. The fever fact sheet is a useful place to start: https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Fever_in_childre…

Under 6 months the general recommendation is an axillary thermometer (under the arm) that's about $10-15 at the pharmacy. Over that age, you could probably do without a thermometer (in a normal non-COVID setting).
