Canon PowerShot SX230HS $229 Deliverd

90

I decided to get this camera after reading a few reviews of compact zooms.
High street price seems to be around $380, so I went online :)
I paid $189 plus $40 DHL shipping. Making $229, and it arrived after 5 days.
What you get is a USA model, so no Australian warranty and the company seems to have a patchy record dealing with returns, though you can pay extra for a 3 year worldwide mack cover.
I used Paypal which gives you some protection for the first month or so.
The charger that comes with it is the CB-2LX with the USA flip out plug for which an adapter is supplied.
eBay does the Australian CB-2LXE chargers for around $15, if that is a problem for you.
I got the red one which is actually purple / pink so don't belive the photo!
Also included were a 2GB memory card and a lens brush.
Enjoy!

I bought this camera during the HN buy one get one free sale and I'm loving it, certainly a good price at $229. It's made even better with chdk (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK)

    • so how much you paid for 2?

      • Most likely $393 for two - that was the going price at the time ;-)

        • Correct Dave. I did buy the extended warranty as well because I've had a camera or two bite the dust over the years. It worked out well meeting a fellow ozbargainer at HN when they opened to split the purchase!

    • Hey dkmvs_com

Is it alright to install the CHDK.. Will it void the warranty?

Which version are you using for your SX230HS?

      Thanks

      • It does not void the warranty as it is only software that is kept on the SD card. Go to the wiki page, it explains all. It doesn't require any technical knowledge but this is for the type of people who like to mod their electronics, so it takes a bit of work (i.e. reading the wiki and the user manual to get anything out of it).

Here's some photos I took with one of these the other night. It's a really great camera for a non-DSLR.

Available for similar price on Amazon at the moment:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J3YCGM/ref=ox_sc_act_ti…

Only about $210AU depending on exchange rate ($208US with 8-16 day shipping, priority courier makes it $235US)

Personally, I would order from Amazon before Citiwide as I have no experience with Citiwide.

    • 208US delivered from amazon.. SOLD!!

  • I would like to suggest that people have a look at the IXUS 115 HS if they're only looking for a simple point-and-shoot camera for around $150. Link: http://www.binglee.com.au/canon-ixus-115-hs-silver-ixus-115-…

I admit doesn't seem to be a "bargain", but it might suit certain people better than the powershot

    • good one. better f lens, smaller body, and cheaper. even binglee can sell same price as dwi. strange.

so why 230 model is more expensive?

      • lets see… (230hx vs ixus 115)
        (working from http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_… and http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/For-You/Digital-Cameras/115HS-…)

Backlit sensor vs high sensitivity (backlit is much better for low light)
14x optical zoom vs 4x optical zoom
3" view screen on both however the sx230 has about double the pixels
sx230 has a gps tracking system for geo-locating your pictures (great for travel but not sure otherwise)
sx230 has a ton of shooting modes, picture options etc that you may never use :D (for that matter so does the ixus115 - but fewer options to not use on that one)
For more detail I'd suggest the links - and review sites like dpreview and steve's digicam
Both are pretty decent cameras - just depends on what features matter to you
        Jen
