NetGear EVA9000 for $99.95 + P/H from Megabuy

20

A good price for this unit. Mine cost $300 in mid 2010. Note though that these are now EOL units from NetGear and apparently internet features may not work correctly due to website changes (haven't really used that at all myself so can't say). Note sure on expiry date so just put 31st of December for now.

  • the downside of this unit is that it is using the Sigma Designs 8635 chipset, which is now quite old. Compared to the newer WDTV Live SMP which has the 8670 chipset, which can be had for a bit more $$

    • seems to be something in the bin.

  • With the Netgear EVA9000 Digital Entertainer HD Media Player you can do all of this. Unlike many other inferior devices like Western Digital WDTV Live HD Media Player, Seagate Free Agent Goflex TV Medial Player, Netgear EVA2000 Media Player and others

    umm yeah inferior not really!

  • Looks like someone's posted it for us so we didn't even need to do it…

What you get with the EVA9000 (which is actually the same hardware as the EVA9150 which comes with a 500GB HDD pre-installed) is built-in Wireless-N and a HDD bay, which can be used both to store content and for buffering when streaming from your PC or the internet.

Also, Netgear has just released the latest firmware (2.4.170) in October 2011. It fixes multiple bugs including Windows 7 support, access to Windows Shares, YouTube and many more. You can download the latest Netgear EVA9000 firmware from the Netgear Knowledgebase and read the release ntoes there (check v 2.4.68 for most changes). Version 2.4.170 of the firmware includes all these fixes as well as the YouTube fix.

You won't find too many media players for under $100 and you certainly won't find any that have built-in Wireless-N and can take a Hard Drive at that price. If you like running around the house with USB drives or have lots of network wires everywhere or want to spend more money on a WD and then buy a wireless adapter for it you can certainly do it, but if you want something that basically does the same thing for under $100 this is a good option.

I bought one myself when we got these in (and so did pretty much everyone in the office), upgraded the firmware to 2.4.170 and personally I quite like it.

Also, for anyone in Brisbane happy to offer pick-up of these at Lawnton if you prefer to drive rather than have it sent out.
