Make the Play bars $127 again you animals!

    • I wish! I'd probably get another set. I ponied up at the BF sale rather than wait for them to reach that level again, downloaded a christmas scene formula from hue labs, and got instant WAF.

Incidentally, if anyone wanted the 2m indoor lightstrip kit, it is $116.42 from amazon uk with free prime shipping. Not quite the recent $99 from .au but if you missed that then this is close. Alternatively, if you can find one, Bunnings is clearing out the Lifx 2m lightstrip - which has individually addressable zones - for $103.

  • Turning the Play things into active backlighting still requires a really expensive extra box, right?

    • Or an Nvidia Shield

Ooh, I have an older one of those. Tell me more!

        • +2

Use the "Hue Essentials" app on the shield for active backlighting. Saves buying the Hue sync hdmi box.

@MeagerDollarBucks: There's also one called Hue Stream that I installed but haven't tried yet.

None of these apps will work with DRM'd streams from Netflix, Prime etc - although I'm happy to be corrected if any do. You'll definitely need the sync box for them.

            • @Astronaut Joe: Bugger! Marvel films on Disney+ would've been the main use case.

I suppose I should look into the cheaper Raspberry Pi way of doing it, but that seems like something I'd quite easily screw up

              • @evadw: I probably should have checked if there was a Pi was of doing it! I'm going to have a read of the Harmonize Project tonight.

            • @Astronaut Joe: Some apps do work i.e. Kayo and ABC iview etc.

I use Kodi for everything else without issue.

              • @MeagerDollarBucks: Do you mean you use Netflix, Prime etc. apps inside Kodi, and that works with Hue things? Or do you just mean you use Kodi to watch content from… alternative sources

                • @evadw: I haven't used other apps inside Kodi, my alternative sources cover all of my requirements in a "one stop shop" if you catch my drift.

    • If you're using them with a computer, then you can use third party software in lieu of the additional hardware box too. I have third party RGB hue-connected downlights throughout my house and I can have them mimic my computer screen colouration or sync with my music without any additional hardware.

If you're using them with a computer you can use the official Hue app and avoid DRM issues.

        • Fair point. Either Hue Sync App didn't exist when I first started, or I wasn't aware of it.

None the less, the third party software I use also does a variety of other things and has let me create some very custom rules on the bridge that the mainline Hue system does not allow.
