Price drop on the discontinued Alpinist in green, which appears to be the most popular and highly rated.

Reviews note that some may be returned stock, or that there are minor imperfections in some stock.

Unable to make up my mind on getting this Alpinist or the 2020 Alpinist. I saw Starbuy had a special on the 2020 version for the white dial not so long ago.

  Thanks OP, I have been following this model as well, the new one has a better movement, build quality and rectifies the strap issue. It is however a touch bigger than the older version. The price gap is about 130 dollars, IMO not large enough to for the older one. I hope the price drops further

    It's also a matter of taste. The newer ones are Prospex models (busier face) with the cyclops lens, and the loss of the iconic engraved back.

    It seems the SARB017 is the golden boy, but if you like the newer ones, they are objectively 'mechanically' better.

      I personally like the “even newer” ones, which are without the compass. SPB157, SPB159 etc. These have been on sale recently for as low as $720 excluding cash back offers at Myer and DJ, so hold out for re stock and sale. They are a touch below 38 though, so depends on the size you prefer.

    This being discontinued and original (this isn’t the first release of alpinist though) is now a collector’s item whereas the new one is not as appealing with the Prospex logo. My personal preference would be to choose this over the new one. Having said that I wouldn’t buy this from Amazon based on the reviews as these seems to be returned/defective/seconds and some even don’t have the original parts. I ordered mine from Japan but paid more than this. I have sold a few watches over the last year but have kept this in my collection as it’s a cult watch and would stay very popular even in years to come.

  Pleased with the recent OzBargain deal on my 2020 Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB123J for $699 shipped from Starbuy.I swapped out the Green leather band for a Seiko Bracelet.

  This one is the iconic model, and more desirable among collectors than the Prospex signed new models. A good price but it would be disappointing if it was flawed or damaged, however having said that Amazon are usually good with any return issues.
