I don't get this…… the can is 10c each.. making it $2.40 rebate if we return a box of cans. But other states are charging like $4 more…. Why?

    • Why does a dog…?

Time to start an interstate can racket a la Seinfeld muffin stumps.

      "admin fees"

      • OK….has anyone from Vic tried to collect their cans and sell to other states?

        • I could only imagine how much cans people have accumulated after the borders have been down for so long.
Would be great living on the border, buy cheap and return cans.
Would go down to $8.10 xD

        • Its happened and its not allowed and you get fined if caught.

          • @Dontdoit: funny….. So you'll need a local license to sell bottles?

            • @HD9990: it is actually illegal, but in a somewhat roundabout way. they use their discretion but essentially you make a declaration when you hand cans in to say that they were purchased in the state you're using them from. If you get found out then you've made a false declaration.

WA only recently introduced this scheme and technically they say any can/bottle purchased before the scheme officially came in, is invalid…..but are you going to check the date of the sugar encrusted in the bottle…..

i believe officially you only need to make the declaration if the operator thinks you're likely to have gotten them from somewhere else or if you're returning more than 1500 items, or somewhere around there?

    • Because the people who collect the containers are paid a recycling cost, so the actual cost of the container deposit scheme is about 13-14 cents per item.

      • Just a tax on people who were doing the right thing to start with, like a lot of government initiatives.
