I would pay ~$200 more for a brand name
yeah me too actually. 51" samsung plasma 3d full hd for $699
Be aware that most 3D TVs need active glasses, that can cost over $100 each. Buying a few pairs of active glasses for when your mates come over can really add to the cost of a cheap 3D TV. By contrast, the OHKI comes with four free glasses. If those aren't enough, I imagine that spare cinema glasses or the cheap $2 ones from ebay should work as they are all just circular polarization filters, though I haven't tried this yet.
The real thing may be the best buy… a real LG.
First time I see this brand. Don't risk buying unknown brands.
I've seen it around on Ebay for quite a few months, that's about it.
how the hell do u watch 3d with 60hz wtf
yeah what is up with 60hz?? no wonder it is $499
This is because this TV is passive rather than active. Active 3D displays the right and left image at a different time, so they need to be twice as fast. Passive TVs display the right and left image at the same time, but with different polarization. There is lot of discussion of the advantages of active vs passive; the primary disadvantage of passive is the tiny horizontal black lines it adds to 3D images, which aren't noticeable in 42" TVs. Passive has lots of advantages, in particular for a price sensitive buyer the passive glasses are just cheap $2 bits of plastic while active glasses can cost over $100.
Passive glasses are usually also more comfortable. For more details, see e.g.: http://3dradar.techradar.com/3d-tech/active-shutter-vs-passi…
Good deal, rep just ignore the ill-informed comments from the peanut gallery! ;)
@furythree & nubzy, you guys really need to do some research into LCD & 3d tech before you embarrass yourselves with foolish comments, all you're showing ATM is your complete ignorance.
Got mine a few days ago…WOW!!! Amazing for the money :)
As did I, here are my thoughts:
Low contrast 3D films such as Toy Story 3 and Sharks 3D look great to me; it looks like the TV is just a glass window showing the action behind the screen. Various quibbles: compression artifacts in SD broadcasts are rather obvious; the screen has to be above eye level or the 3D effect is ruined, the feature to automatically convert 2D movies to 3D appears doesn't seem to do anything useful. The documentation could also be better, the manual didn't mention a physical switch on the back of the TV that needed to be pressed before it would turn on. It also doesn't really give any information that couldn't be found by just navigating the menus. You'll need to switch your TV manually between positive order and Antitone depending on what 3D movie you are watching to get the right 3D effect, which requires a few seconds of menu diving.
You'll also need a 3D bluray player (or PS3) to play 3D blurays, but if you are really tight you can download 3D media off youtube etc., and play it on your TV from your HDMI enabled PC. I imagine above-below 1080p format works best (though again, I would prefer if this was documented somewhere). I also used this feature to display photos from my friends 3D camera.
Even with the most expensive equipment you can find things not to like. Given that this is a $499 3D TV with 4 free glasses, I am very happy with this purchase.
