*Based on Embertec data – for further details see http://www.embertec.com/default.asp?PageID=107

Call 1300 788 776 to book your free installation.

Most appliances these days such as TVs and PCs keep on consuming electricity in ‘standby mode’ even after you’ve switched them off. Sometimes this is necessary, like when your TV Recorder is scheduled to record programs. But most times, it’s just a waste of power and money. Nearly 11% of an average power bill is paying for this wasted power.

That’s where our Standby Power Controller (SPC) program can help by providing you with Embertec Emberplugs™, a revolutionary new Australian product. When connected to your PC or TV system, this special plug adaptor will sense when your appliances are in standby mode and automatically power them down. When you want them powered on, just switch them on as usual. The SPC will save you wasted power without any extra effort required.

Under the Victorian State Government’s Energy Saver Incentive scheme, up to four Embertec Emberplugs™ (worth $100 each) are available for free installation in your home – don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

      Should've been mentioned in title

have you done it, how long do they take?
my hubby always paranoid, the ppl turn up will be casing your home!

    • +1

It begs the question: why does it need installation? Can't be that complex..

      • +2

You sign a form that says you had a couple of hundred bucks worth of stuff installed, and they get a government rebate. Also will swap over your old light globes for energy saving ones.

      • -1

It "raises" the question, it doesn't beg it. Completely different concept.

        • If you stick to eras-gone meaning of the term "begging the question", sure. However, modern usage of the word "beg" is completely different. Essentially establishing the phrase "beg the question" to mean the same as "ask the question". Similar to how the phrase "beg to differ" now means something completely different..

Yeah we had it done, and it really shouldn't take more than 5 mins. Wife was glad I was home. She was not particularly comfortable with the installer, who took almost half an hour.

The infrared attachment is really annoying with a green flashing at odd times, and every time you press a button on a remote. Waiting until we get the next power bill before I pass judgment.

Is there a catch like you must sign up to promotional material by the manufacturer?
I might do this, a couple of hundred a year is better in my pocket :)

  • +2

The installation is just plugging it into the wall, plugging your stuff into it, showing you how it works and then signing the certificate over to them. Takes 10-15 minutes.

  • +2

go on, worth $100 each? 6/8 socket green powerboards costs way less than that.

    • +1

they arn't green powerboards, they look like a big double adaptor with two different plugs, one for sensing "plug A" and one for switching "Plug B"… they're basically relays which switch off some appliances connected to "plug B" such as a monitor. It does it by sensing the current passing through "plug A"

      • +1

yeah, but they essentially do the same thing (master/slave) setup. for free they are fine but if you actually have to buy one @ $100 then a smart green powerboard is cheaper. there's only one slave outlet so chances are you're going to need an extension board anyways.

If each SPC costs 100$ it will take about 57 years to recover its cost in saved electricity (based on 1W standby power consumption and 20 cents per kW rate). Or looking from another end it will save you $1.75 a year. Doesn't look very attractive if one has to pay anything for them.

    • +1

yes, but these ones are free.
you have negged based on retail price, not based on the specifics of this post.
      bit unfair don't you reckon?

      • -3

They are not free if you value your time. All together it will cost you at least 30 min (to call them + be at home when they come) for some questionable savings.

Apologies not a duplicate. Same deal, different company.

  • +3

One of the things that you agree to in these deals is to sign away the benefots of the reduced power consumption to the company supplying the plugs. I wonder what effect that has? If you save energy, but give those savings to someone else who therefore can increase their carbon footprint but offset it with your savings, are we really reducing our carbon footprint or is it all smoke and mirrors?
As such I look at it as saving some power maybe, but not helping the environment as your "notional" savings are given to someone else to use and sell. It may be that this is actually bad for the envirnment.

Free stuff is s bargain though, provided the thing you sign away is worth nothing to you.

I guess free is free, but this sounds more like a scam to get money from a Government scheme (which ultimately comes from the taxpayer) with an overpriced item (and you signing to say you have received the goods & services). The figures on their website works out to a saving of approx 80W for AV & 40W for PC (it would actually have ot be higher than this, because I assume there is no saving whilst the device is actually in use). If you shutdown your PC & the monitor is in standby I would be very suprised how it would still be drawing 40W. It would be interesting if they could post the "field trial report" on their website rather than just quoting some figures.

no way is it worth letting someone into your home to install something worthless. Electricity savings stated are made up, as is the value.

    • +1

Agreed. It's just more of this climate change crap..

      • +1

+1. The offer is intriguing, but sounds more like BS to me…

  • I'm going to try make an appointment, and plug in 4 powerboards into the power point I have outside my house, and have them "install" it there :P

    • These have built in surge protectors which is good if you don't have any. We had four of them installed today and it already worked on the TV where it wouldn't start unless you pressed the little receiver button :)

      • What's this little receiver button?

        Care to elaborate? :)

        I ceebs researching lol

        • It picks up TV's remote control signal and does it's magic based on that.
