I have also heard and know people who have got it at $339 cash from Harvey Norman.

Harvey Norman have a good price of $398 on the 'Sony Bravia 32" Full High Definition LCD Internet TV'. Speaking to the sales guy at HN he thinks the price is available until Monday 5th of December. Other competitor shops (JB etc. have these listed for $550+)

This Smart TV has a brilliant picture quality, Network Connectivity, Sony's internet Content, iPhone & Android App and for the price I could not go past it. As i will use this as a PC monitor, i will also be writing it off on tax for an extra discount.

  • is there any way to get a pc to use less of the screen (i.e. leave a thick black border and only use the center). I find 32inch way too big to use as a monitor but it would be great to have as monitor/tv if I could do this.
    Seems like a good price!

    • +4

If you use HDMI [edit: or DVI or DisplayPort, not sure about analog), in your video card's configuartion you should find a setting called overscan/underscan (on my ATI config there is a slider). It basically works to shrink the screen and create black borders.

    • +2

Change the scaling options on your pc. Picture quality will degrade though.

      • +1

hmm my desktop just has integrated graphics but gives me something to research, thanks :D

    • +1

yes you can. with nvidia cards you can actually position the screen your yourself and modify its resolution to what you see is fit.
its in the nvidia control panel, used to do it on my 26inch bravia all the time for fun.

  • Great price.Only if it was LED. Argh! I cant make my mind.

    First world problems.

    • +1

LED is just marketing gimmick, difference in picture quality would be negligable at this price point (if they sold led at this price).

      • +1

        Disagree

LEDs will produce significantly better contrast ratios. Blacks are much blacker.

        • +1

It depends on the model, some LEDs can be very poor. Blacks are only much better on true backlit models, which aren't really around too much any more. You loose some the advantages on edge-lit but gain the slimness instead

    • +1

Disagree - LED use less power than LCD. Check the Energy rating!

LED (32" ex720) uses 93W compared to 109W by the above LCD

      • +3

Don't think I would consider 16w when picking a TV… Even with the TV on 24/7 the savings would be tiny!

        • +6

Agree, but that was the start, the LCD are 2-3 times thicker compared to LEDs.. I disagree it is a marketing gimmick!

        • But the thinner panels on LED TV also mean tiny speakers with poor sound.
Not an issue if you have a home cinema setup but then again it means more energy consumption (which leads back to your original argument).

      • My 27" CRT uses 220W !

There is a thread on Whirlpool which has some useful comments. It's related to a 40" but the same hardware is used between 32 and 40".
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1674885

    • Its normal for companies to just use general parts to cut costs. Samsung uses the same panel for the D550, D6900 and D8000 plasmas. Only differences are the filters/screen protection and the firmware.

  • +1

Crap.. got this for $600 in August

  • That'd be right! My mum bought one of these not long ago for $500 >:-(

  • Will DSE price match this? I want QFF points :D

What other brands does 1080p 32" around this price point? And a comparison between them?

    • DSE will only price match if a close HN store has said tv in stock.

      • DSE price matched the offer. Just ask nicely.

  • -2

is this a 50hz? any one find cheaper?

    • Can't find cheaper and yes it is 50hz

      • -1

yeah, I don't mind LCD but 50hz… arrrh..

    ***FROM Whirlpool forum above****
CHOICE MAGAZINE ONLINE 5th Sept 2011
    102-107cm TVs review
Our updated report looks at 27 HD plasma and LCD/LED televisions

    Sony KDL40CX520
    Scored 73/100 | $999
    Good points:
    • Very good score for Blu-ray viewing.
    • Very good score for game console viewing.
    • Very good score for HD broadcast viewing.
    • Very good score for viewing angles.
    • Very good score for still photos viewing.
    Bad points:
    • On-board controls have very poor labelling.
    • Remote control has some very small keys and some are too closely spaced.
    • No channel favourites function.

The above info is a copy and paste from CHOICE ONLINE.
This television was the winner overall out of a review of 27 televisions priced between $749 & $2499. Of course the prices quoted are RRP.
It was also the second cheapest television out of the top 10 rated in this review.
I hope this helps with the discussion.

  • +1

I'd really like this, but after being burnt so many times with sony products, i told my self "never again" arrrgghhh

  • Same price at DSE!

  • Will this be pretty much the best 32" TV around under $500 this year? Or should I keep waiting for a 32" LED for around this price?

  • 1st post! - Would this be decent as a computer monitor?

    • +1

I suggest check it out your self in store, as i think 32" is the biggest that a 'decent' monitor could go as the best resolution is 1920 x 1080 and that doesn't change depending on the screen size.

So as there is the same number of physical pixels in a 32" screen as a 26" screen(32" has larger pixels), a 26" screen would be crisper for small things like text at the expense of 6" of screen space.

    • yep its the perfect tv for a pc monitor….and can use it as a tv when ur pc is off! =D

  • +4

Video pro price is now $396 with free shipping. Also the warranty seems good being priced at $99 for 5 years.

    • no stock

    • Stock will arrive mid next week. Thanks to you I have just order it wt 5yr warranty + free delivery.

  • +2

389.99 at Costco Auburn if you already have membership

  • -8

Before I commit nearly half a grand to this, any reason why one shouldn't buy this?

    • +4

$398 is hardly half a grand.

        • +1

Definition of nearly (from the Collins dictionary): "almost; practically". $398 is not practically or almost $500, its over 20% less. Or is that too much of the English language for you?

        • -1

          @swimmingtoad

          And you want to bring language in;

          sub·jec·tive/səbˈjektiv/
Adjective: Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

        • .. I'll let the votes say it all.

    • I would have liked it to have a PVR function to record to USB, but it seems that PVR's are more common in the cheaper brands

    • -3

LOL at all the negs. I was merely asking for any bad points regarding this TV. Hivemind. Sigh.

Note that I didn't mention that this isn't a bad deal. Just looking for opinions weighing the other direction. Take for example Nugga's point, that is constructive criticism. Not negs and "wtf 398 is not half a grand" responses.

    $399 at Binglee http://www.binglee.com.au/

    • +1

Nice find! i updated the post and credited you, hope you don't mind.
Wonder if HN will give me my $18.95 back under there best price guarantee policy :)

      • Ask! Then let us know how you went too :P

        • Tried on the DSE price of $339

Twittered Harvey Norman on Monday 5th; then enter my details into contact us page as directed. Received an email from one of the guys at the Chadstone store that day, explaining that "The nature of the DSE price doesn't officially fall under the terms and conditions of the best price guarantee" but as he was aware of them selling for $339 he had organized a $59 refund with Harvey Norman Online.

Very happy with Harvey Norman Customer service: Special mention to Chadstone store.
Go Harvey, Go Harvey, Go Harvey Norman

      • I would Just give Binglee a call (1300 980 399) and they will most likely bring the price down to $365-380. easily (see comment below). I did so with their Toshiba lcd's easily. "Everything's Negotiable"

  • -3

nice price but looking for a 40 or 46"

  • Got it for $427 last unit at HN Oxley, they also gave me 2 year extended warranty in that price.. the guy said the 2yr warranty normally cost like $60 ~ but gave me it for half price, good deal I say, just hooked it all up and I must say image is awesomely sharp :D

    Thanks OP

Online Customer Rep Quoted me the best price is $365 this TV from Bing Lee

    • How much did they quote to ship it?

    • I spoke to a Rep but he wouldn't match this price, how did you get it?

      • I asked what the best price they could do on this TV is and they said that is the best you'ld get.

        • Tried again, 'carlos', told me best price was $379 which I could get by signing up for the newsletter and receive 5% off.

        • Try lying and saying that you got the 365 offer last night and you want to take it up?

        • +2

Carlos - OzB's most hated rep.

      • Same, the online rep wouldn't budge.

  • Just purchased for $454.00 ($365.00 + $89.00) with 5 years Warranty from Bing Lee :-)

Has anyone been able to better that?

  • -1

Fark….jumped on the $397 DSE deal for the BX320 earlier this week. (well $357 after staff discount + paypal cashback)

Would it be worth getting a refund on that (when it turns up next week) and grabing this model?

    I'm guessing 'yes', right?

    • +1

Is there any difference other than 720p v 1080p? Because apparently your eye can't tell the difference between the two at a normal viewing distance so i wouldnt worry about it.

      • Yeah, good point - not sure I need all the other gizmos…but it's a newer model isn't it?

        • Yep. Imo a way better model

    • me too
dse don't do change of mind refunds anymore do they?

      • -1

        From the DSE website…

What happens if I have purchased a product online and need to return it?
Items can be returned by mail. This can be coordinated through our Contact Centre on 1300 366 644.

You can also return or exchange most online purchases at any Dick Smith store. Simply approach the sales or service counter for assistance where you wish to make a claim under our Returns Policy or the ACL, including when:

-Goods are damaged or faulty through no fault of your own
        -Goods are incorrectly ordered
        -Goods are supplied incorrectly
-Goods vary from their description on the website (or any sample provided)

Incorrectly ordered or supplied Online Goods can be returned but must be unopened. Please retain your invoice as proof of purchase.

Reckon I could claim the second option? "I thought it was the 520. Sorry. Can I have my money back please?" :D

        • If you took it into a store, then no.

The store manager/sales staff will evaluate whether they can sell that product for 100% of its original value.

If the tv is brand new and/or unopened or used then generally a refund will be available, however, if the tv has been opened and used, then your answer is no since they must then discount that tv to sell it, generally selling it below cost.

It was because too many people abused the returns system that it cost dickies too much money to keep the returns policy in place.

On the other hand, if you contacted dickies headoffice (contact center) then you might get away with it

  • ^ It would still be in the box, so I should be ok, yeah?

    • I work at Dick Smith as a casual (but am not speaking on their behalf).

The official policy is "no", but that being said, if the TV is in perfect/unopened condition I imagine that most managers would rather make a customer happy and do the refund. Call up your local store, explain the situation and ask. Make sure it's a model that the particular store actually sells also (search for stock online) because otherwise they're probably not going to want a one-off TV sitting around. It's entirely up to the manager but I imagine they'd do it for you.

      • Thanks for the info. I now have email confirmation from DSE customer service saying it is all good provided I don't open it and get it to a store within 14 days of the purchase date. =)

  • Jumping from a 26" LCD TV to a 32" Full HD LCD TV may not be too big of a deal, but for less than $400 (when the RRP is over $500), who can really complain?

Thanks for sharing. Definitely made me look forward to the end of work tomorrow afternoon.

  • After a bit of googling and hunting around on Youtube, i think the European version of this TV has PVR (record to USB HDD) capability. I wonder why Sony AUS has not enabled it.

    • That would make sense as i have found some conflicting information on if it is available or not. Wonder is Sony AUS could release a firmware update to enable this feature :). Please SONY….

      • I doubt they will now. I dare say they just want to promote the higher models

  • Guys,
Can you please let me know, how can use this TV for my WIFI internet. Do I need to buy anything else ti use my WIFI internet?
Also I assume that I can browse any websites with the brower by IE.

    Thanks

    • From what I know, you have to buy the Sony Wireless Adapter to enable WiFi capability. ~$75

    • You need to have the internet first. then purchase the Optional WIFI dongle for the TV, i think you need to buy Sony one its around about $100, other wise there is an Ethernet port if you have the option to hard wire it into your network

  • +3

    DSE Now cheapest
