  • Very clever from Qantas. Thanks for the tip OP.

Do you know if they have ever run a formal program like this previously? I don't remember seeing one.

Their newsroom said it's the first time ever. I've had friends who have called up and managed to switch in the past, but this is the first of it's kind, as you say, formally.

    • There was one specifically for Kiwis years ago

  • I wonder if this would exempt you from their fast track challenges in the future? I’m Platinum with VA and have Plat with Qatar (and Silver with CX) from their previous status match, so don’t currently need QF Gold.

I’ll take it for free but if this meant I couldn’t use their challenge in the future I might pass for now.

    • Be surprised. The point is to get you across to take that earnings away from competitors from Frequent flyers. If you apply again and qualify (eg my friend had to do x number of flights in y months) they'd probably still do it. But that's just my guess.

      • Generally status matches/challenges are a once in a lifetime thing.

The match is offered to entice you to change your travel patterns. These programs "reward" loyalty. If you're not being loyal, then the airline isn't going to give you benefits. If they give out high status to all comers it removes the incentive for high value customers to be loyal.

If you want to do this to get a few free visits to the lounge while flying on cheap cattle tickets, go ahead but don't expect to do it more than once.

  • Great deal, pity my velocity gold slipped this year.

    • I thought VA offered status extension for one year.. i am good until Sep 2021 with that

      • I guess I must've expired before they brought that in.

        • I’d ring them to ask.

Lounges are already bloody packed as it is.

Just to be aware they will be having no jab, no fly policy https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-24/covid-19-vaccine-pass…

    • Internationally. And that's already the case for other vaccines for some countries (see yellow fever) :/ But yes, if that's a concern, it's worth noting.

Great! All the more reason to fly with them then!

  • I have a reasonable amount of QFF and am wondering whether there will be further changes to the program in order for the airline to reduce costs. I've recently seen travel reporters showing US airlines are reducing certain features (catering, lounge, etc) and worry this may also happen with Qantas.

At some point, I'd love to travel but don't want a "no frills" experience so the airline can save $$. Is it better to convert the points to something else?

    • Qantas has Jetstar as their subsidiary in the low cost /no frills market, so are unlikely to cut like that. The best use of points, if flying, is generally to upgrade - you can burn them on economy too, but if you can use them to get yourself a business update on top of your economy, or first, especially internationally, it's a massive experience changer.

(I used them last year to get an Emirates 1st class flight, and it was like another world. Also Emirates and Qatar business the previous year, for minimal taxes!).

Absolute worst case - use them at the Qantas store to buy toasters/movie tickets, but please, only as a last resort, it's really ruining their potential value, especially as you said you have quite a few.

      • Think it was mentioned somewhere that by March 2021 Emirates will no longer allow partner booking on First Class with miles.

      • I want to try first class but am worried the service and offerings have been watered down to save costs.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlilgHtmeIE

Airlines like Delta are not offering hot meals on first class for domestic services, and a very limited drink selection. As you're in the industry, do you think Qantas has been affected and is reducing costs in a similar way?

        • Delta airlines domestic first class is equiv to our domestic business class. Also, Qantas isn't operating any First Class flights as they're not flying internationally at the moment.
