        • Yeh well not sure if I should get this one. Seems like a backwards step going from 2560X1600 back down to 1080

          • +2

@Homr: Depends on what you plan to use it for. This is first and foremost a ChromeOS device and not an Android tablet.

I don't use any Android tablets in my life but I've found ChromeOS devices to actually be nice and simple/fun/fast to use. Can't quite put my finger on it but they seem to hit the mark for me.

            • @jace88: oh I always thought ChromeOS was Android as their both made by google, interesting.

              • +1

@Homr: Totally different. ChromeOS is much more controlled in terms of updates (every six weeks) and expiry dates (ie how long a device will get updates for), and it's just much more stable. Read up a bit on it - it might surprise you especially if you find yourself mostly spending time in Chrome browser.

          • +1

@Homr: every time there's a 27" 1080p monitor posted people argue whether 1080p is good for a 27" monitor. and some people say that yes it's actually ok

what does it say about a 10" device with the same resolution? you have to literally shove it in your face to spot a difference

          • @Homr: It is not 1080p though it is 1200p.

      • -1

It looks like the screen spec on JB Hifi web site is incorrect.

From Lenovo themselves the screen is is follows:

        Display Type
        10.1" FHD (1920 x 1200) IPS, glossy, touchscreen, 400 nits

  • +3

These have lousy external display resolution, just so ya know.

I bought this and returned it - it was almost a desktop replacement for online-only work, but it doesn't offer anything better than 1080p at 30hz over USB-C (if your monitor supports such a low refresh rate). There were no workarounds when I tested it out.

The screen is somewhat uninspiring compared to the iPad Air (yes, it's three times the price), and it's actually kinda clunky and heay when you factor in the keyboard and separate kickstand.

    • +1

I think to be clear, most monitors don't support that refresh rate so you get stuck at 720p. And it's ugly.

    • +4

yeah this for desktop replacement would be like trying to cut your steak with a spoon on a regular basis

also comes from the same drawer right, but not quite the purpose it was intended for

  • +2

Never used/don't know much about Chromebooks…..

How long do manufacturers normally support their devices for updates/security? Or is it different to the way Android is run?

Would this be a good secondary work device for MS Office, note taking, recording, conferencing etc. After something mobile to take when seeing clients.

Can you use a stylus pen? Recommendations?

    Presume keyboard is not backlit?

    • +1

The great news about ChromeOS devices is that the update approach is closer to Windows in that frequent updates are pushed by Google.

    • +3

ChromeOS devices are updated much more often than android phones/tablets (my HP chromebook seems to update every few weeks mostly in the background, every month or so it may say something like restart to complete update - always optional), the Lenovo Duet is supported with regular updates until that Jun 2028.

The Auto Update Expiration date (AUE) for Chromebooks can be found here

Note that MS Office on a chromebook means you will need to use the Office365 android app, or the browser based apps, as well as gimped operation with Google Drive (forces readonly) and is basically a subpar experience compared with the Full Office 365 experience on Windows.

The Duet has a digitiser compatible with any USI spec pen (Lenovo have one for around $45).

  • +1

Yes, this is great news for me. Always wanted to replace my tab a with a 10inch chromebook.

  • +2

6.5 years of OS updates, not bad.

  • +1

maily watching youtube and sometimes browsing web, how does this compare to a recent deal on Samsung A7 for $303 ? :)

    • Yeah this is my question, A7 or this. A7 has 4g which is a winner, this has a keyboard.

    • +2

Full desktop Chrome is the real draw card for me. The browsing experience is just better than tablets.

    • I'm on the same page. I was hoping this wasnt going to be lowkey ozbargained oh well.
I am however leaning towards the duet though.

  • price shows as 499$
when will it be reduced to 374$?

    • 25th of November.

  • Just wondering, can I use this one for mocking seven eleven fuel lock?

    • Probably not. I don't think you can even sideload Android apps on chromeOS yet, but I may be wrong?

      • Android apps are now supported, you will just need to check if the app you need is available on the tablet Playstore.

        • Yes Android apps work from the play store, but you can't install APK files from other sources like you can on a phone or tablet, at least not without developer mode as far as I know.

  • Looks great, but gotta say, trying to use a 10.1 inch display for a laptop is just too small for my eyes.

Works fine for a tablet like an iPad, but not w a desktop browser and desktop type apps.

  • My ideal chromebook tablet would be a Samsung Tab S7 running chromeOS.
    …Ifonly

My preference for ChromeOS over a vanilla android tab:
    1. Frequent updates consistently for 5-7 years
    2. Built in Linux support
    3. Android app support
    4. Much simpler admin
    5. And lastly - the surprise bonus of chromebooks for me has been the lowercase keyboard. It has been unexpectedly calming, and most appreciated. no more caps

Failing Samsung seeing the light, I think I will hold out for the 2021 Chromebooks that will have Mediatek's next-gen 6nm MT8195 CPU with A78 ARM cores in them (they could be 2.5x more powerful than the A73 cores in the P60)

I bought this, and sold it after a few weeks, its a terrible tablet because chrome os for tablets is poor, no palm detecteuon and there are no real cases for it if you want it to be as portable as a tablet should be, its also a terrible laptop, screen is too small to use on a desk, floppy keyboard makes it terrible to use on a couch or in bed. Its a toy, a but of fun, but not productivity, I found I would procrastinate tasks because I just couldn't be bothered opening it up and using it

    • +2

blaming Lenovo and Google for procrastination? color me impressed

in my mind, this is mostly a device for:
      - browsing
      - chatting/video call with friends
      - emails
      - media consumption
      - some gaming
      - all in a light portable package
      - with great detailed and bright screen
      - and long battery life
      - it is indeed designed to be used either on desk with keyboard attached (or without if you want), or hand held with keyboard detached

if you need something on top of this, you need a different device.

      • -2

its my experience, youre entitled to yours

  • I just bought this not long ago for $499 🤬🤬

  • Is this Chromebook a worthy upgrade from a Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus?

Display wise the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus has a 2560 x 1600 display.

  • I was planning on spending a similar amount for my kids for Christmas and wanted to buy a XP-PEN off Amazon. Would this do as good of a job? Any insight or links to other sites helping me would be great

    • Dedicated graphics tablets like the XP-Pen would most likely provide a better drawing experience than the Chromebook Duet.
The chromebook will still need a stylus (USI compatible model), and then you may be able to draw.
It is a $400 tablet, it can do many things, but will never be a match for a dedicated tablet coupled with a pc running photoshop etc
My guess is the XP-Pen needs another PC with your graphic apps, but will most likely provide a lower latency, higher resolution, tilt, more accurate colours, less jitter and lag to give a more professional experience.

  • Why is stacking with gift cards crossed out?

    Won't this work?

    • It will but wont give the best deal. Read Applause Comment.
I deleted that line to avoid any confusion on the best price possible,

      • The 15% off 'for him' gift cards should somehow exchange to jbhifi ones (if you want to order online) if I'm not mistaken?

I live like an hour from the nearest jb hi fi so online is a must for me.

        • I have some gift cards for JB, but they can only be used in store, not online. Are these different?

      • I guess one can buy discounted (3-4%) Coles gift cards, then use that to buy the 15% off Him gift cards, then exchange them for JB Hifi vouchers.

  • How does this compare with HP 12 inch x360 which will be for 399?

    • +1

I would buy the Lenovo Duet, but I already have the HP x360 14" with i3 Core processor.

I'm not keen on the HP 12" x360, screen resolution is poor (1366 x 912) and I prefer Arm processors to Intel Celeron for this type of device.

      • Thank You.

  • Cheap and cheerful device. With keyboard it's kinda heavy though. (920g)

  • +2

for $100 more the Lenovo flex looks like a good option for someone wanting a bit 'more'
bigger screen, better keyboard, and most reviews rate it as the best chromebook in the price bracket.
Considering one for primary school kids byod for next year

    • +1

For someone looking to buy a laptop, I think so Lenovo flex would be a better option than the duet.

  • is this deal only in-store?

  • +1

    Hmm…

No-SD card slot on the duet…

Was wondering if the flex 11 would be a better option for Web apps (study ladder, prodigy, Roblox, Minecraft) and O365.

For gaming I assume the dedicated laptop style keyboard and trackpad would be work better?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-ideapad-flex-3-11-…

    • +2

Flex 5 seems to be the better reviewed model than the Flex 3. Little bit more expensive though.

    • I honestly don't know if I'd be recommending a budget Chromebook for gaming… even if Retroarch and the like can run. I also would call out a weak 720p panel isn't a great experience…

I think work out exactly what your priorities are and where the device is going to be used (eg at a desk, on the go, in bed, etc) and then you'll be in a better position to work out which device works well.

Lack of local storage or expandable storage doesn't feel like such an issue to me on a Chromebook.

      • I agree, with the one exception that expandable storage can be an issue if you want to run linux, but you probably want a premium Chromebook for that.

  • +2
  • +1

Same price at The Good Guys now

  • Can someone clarify how the HIM cards are traded for jb Hi fi cards? I rang the card network today and they had no idea about trading or converting to jb Hi fi gift cards.

Is it simply that you go in store and buy jb Hi fi gift cards with these him cards? If that be the case you may as well just spend your him cards in store anyway.

  • -1

it is even cheaper from BigW from tomorrow https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/583844

    • possibly even cheaper…

  • +5

I got it even cheaper today. Got the 15% off gift cards from Coles, at JB Hifi I got them to price match with OfficeWorks for $329 (even though none of the stores nearest me had stock, I found one about half an hour away with a unit).

So I got it for pretty much $280.

    • That is amazing price, Congrats

    • how did you find a Officeworks with stock? I am unable to find any at all.

      • If you try different postcodes you might find stock in some stores. I just tried it and found some stores with limited stock.

        • would you be able to supply me with the area code please?

        • If the OW is really far away (e.g. 3 hrs drive) will they price match it?

    • +1

I can confirm JB will price match this, even without stock from Officeworks. So go get them!

      • Awesome,
no stock in JB near my me :(

    • Fantastic price. Can you share a receipt?

  • So, my cards finally activate at like 11pm last night, I go to JB to price match the next day and….Oficeworks has gone up to $373.

JB weren't willing to price match it, thanks OW barely had any stock could have just kept the price as is.

I'm not opening up the device until post cyber monday in the hopes that another store does the same $329 deal during Black Friday tomorrow or Cyber Monday and I can ask for the price difference (they have 30 day change of mind policy if unopened)
