Nice looking watch but no 1 & 2 are not features

    • +16

If the watch can indeed save the ocean then that is an impressive feature in my books

      • +1

        Only in 2019.

      • Is the watch Aquaman?

  • Looks good. Good discount too

  • -5

Don't really like the look of diver watches. Why is this one so expensive?
The accuracy doesn't seem very good. What movement does it have?

    • +1

      Don't buy it then

    • Automatic

      • +3

There are many different automatic movements, of varying cost and quality.

Apparently it has Seiko's 4R36 movement. I have a watch with this movement (it cost half as much as this one and (IMO) looks a lot better). I didn't realise the accuracy was rated as such, it certainly doesn't seem that bad in actual use.

Knowing this, I can recommend the movement. I just don't like the design.

        • I agree 4R36 is the basis of nearly all new entry to mid level seikos. It's proven to be extremely reliable and accurate. What watch do you have that cost 200 dollars and has a 4r36? to my knowledge turtles were the entry point, curious to know the model

          • @peeppeep: Seiko SRP677 (a Seiko 5). Looking back at my order, I guess it was heavily discounted at the time ($142 USD).

            • @O15: Brilliant deal! Very rare to come across a good 4R36 based Seiko for less than 200 AUD

    • +1

It's expensive because it's limited edition, Seiko is trying to move up in the market and it's an actual divers 200 watch, subjected to more rigorous testing then a watch with the 200m label. No watch maker makes very accurate mechanical movements at this price range, and it's from an official distributor.

      • +2

It's not really limited though. They aren't numbered and made about a billion of them. A bit like a PADI.

        • +1

          Everything is limited…Eventually.

    • +4

Not sure why you got negged for stating your opinion and asking a valid question. Gave you a + to try balance out.
Looks are subjective obviously, I really like the turtle series (have the all black model).
I don't think $400 is that expensive; with 200m water resistance, an decently accurate, reliable movement and (subjectivity) good looks, I think it's reasonable.
It's a 4R36 movement and from what I've read some of them can be very accurate, while others are just within the spec. Mine usually loses about ~3min a week roughly? I haven't really tested that it seems to be about what I notice.

      • +1

Eh, that's OzBargain for you. Negging is a lot easier than constructive discourse.

I will say, whilst I was trying to figure out what movement it had, I found some photos which make it appear nicer than the one on this post. Maybe it's just not the best angle to show off this watch.

        • +2

I think most of them look better in real life. My favourite being the srpc25k. They are also very comfortable.

        • Seiko are notorious for their horrible product photos. It's almost like they're trying to dissuade people from buying their watches.

    • +1

Want accuracy? Buy quartz. This is a cheap automatic.

  • +1

Do people who buy these watches have smart watches? Swap them and say wear these on special occasions? Or just collect?

    • +1

I have a smart watch and a few automatics. Smart watch for everyday things but the traditional watches for smart casual or above. Also just like collecting.

    • +10

I'm a developer and love my tech, but can't stand smart watches. They just have no soul.

      • They're also fugly, especially the big black square known as the Apple Watch.

    • +1

I'm that person who has a smart phone, tablet, laptop and desktop but I've never bothered with a smart watch as I appreciate timeless timepiece too much to wear something which will be obsolete in a couple of years.

With that said, I can see a watch enthusiast owning a smart watch if they were to use it for fitness tracking when working out. But for every day use, nope, I'll take a mechanical.

      • -1

owning a smart watch if they were to use it for fitness tracking when working out

The only problem is that health is 24-7, not just when working out. Think of physical activity all vs a few minutes/hours working out.

I have an attractive mechanical watch over 20 years old, but unless I wear it on my other wrist in addition to the smart watch, it's stayed out of sight for a number of years now.

        • +1

Maybe fitness tracking wasn't the right term. Workout tracking, I guess.
There are absolutely people who would only wear fitness watches whilst exercising. I know at least one.

    • I wear a smart watch when I'm out running, just so I don't need to carry my phone as well.

Any other time I'll wear a mechanical. They just look more elegant and professional than smart watches.

  • +1

    Nice watch but Hardlex 😢

  • +2

Come on Starbuy, bring out the big guns like green sumo

    • You should send them a message to ask. I think there have been times when they have run deals that people have suggested

      • I’ll try again but I did email them once for the grey turtle and didn’t receive a response

      • I asked them about putting the Green Sumo on sale once before and they said no. Two weeks later it went on sale anyway. Grabbed it for $799 in May and wear it every day.

        • +1

I feel like they have a tendency to do that. I enquired a watch before if they can do a similar pricing they did on X date.

They said they can't do it anymore as the discount was only given to them by Seiko for an initial bulk order. Like you, they eventually discounted it again a few weeks later. Good thing I didn't buy it and it also left a sour taste.

          • @xaykogeki: Yes I have also experienced this myself.

          • @xaykogeki: Well they agreed to do the deal on the green sumo this morning after I emailed them. So guess they might have their own reasons

      • +1

@lyle88 Emailed Deepak and got the deal on Green Sumo, so cheers mate :)

        • Nice one!

  • No sapphire glass and no ceramic bezel. I'm out.
Zelos makes a much better watch when new watches released.

    • +1

Ceramic bezel is not going to look good on every watch (though it would fit this one), I don't think that should be a deal breaker.

  • Passing on this because my wrist is too small. All of the other seiko divers that I have bought from starbuy sit in a watch box! Good deal though.

Looks like a cheap copy of OMEGA SEAMASTER……

    • +5

What an obtuse comment in many respects. The Seiko turtle has a great history which can be traced back to the 70s with the reference 6306

    • +3

This will last just as long as my overpriced omega seamaster

      • Except for the glass, and bezel - just wish they’d use sapphire. The amount of glass watches I’ve scratched or broken and then just can’t stand looking at it. I stopped buying watches without sapphire, if the Lenovo watch 7 could do it for around $10 you’d think they could on this.

Also ceramic bezels don’t fade as much once the watch gets old.

Otherwise agree, I think even servicing my seamaster costs more than this - although IMO it looks better.

    • +1

The automatic fad is dying as smart watches sales boom

I akin that to "No one will buy a painting because cameras are good".. You've missed the point

    • +1

Totally wrong. You would be surprised how many auto watch fanatics are out there. Facebook groups with thousands of members. Give me an auto watch any day over a smart watch. Ive actually gone the other way and shelved my smart watch and
95% of the time use my autos, fitbit only gets used when i go for a run.

    • Overpriced? Based on what?

      • My thoughts exactly.

    • +1

Define better? If you mean that smart watch can do things (eg. taking calls, replying to text…) other than telling the times; then I'd say my phone can do those things much much better and I don't need a smart watch.

You probably don't understand the value of automatic watches. Those watches have so many tiny & complicated details and mechanical. They are linked together perfectly and are designed to run as soon as you pick them up. If you wear them often, you don't ever have to worry about charging them. If you wear them occasionally, give them a little wind and they will start running without a hassle.

Also, with proper care, those watches can last you for generations and you can even pass them to your grand kids.
Your smart watches will probably suffer from poor battery life within 4-5 years or even less. By the way, you can even take automatics watches like this Seiko to diving without worrying about breaking them (I didn't mean that you have to go diving but I was referring to how durable they are)

IMO, smart watches are not real watches. Some smart watches (especially Apple ones) looks cheap and are overpriced. You can buy a good phone with the same amount of money and it can do pretty much everything better. The only time I would wear a smart watches would be for tracking my heart rates, calories when working out.
Automatic watches any day for me.

    • +1

I don't think the automatic "fad" is going anywhere. Automatic watches have survived quartz watches and they have survived digital watches. They will survive smart watches, too.
