Galax GeForce RTX 3090 SG (1-Click OC) 24GB GDDR6X RGB LED Graphics Card $2,649 + Delivery @ Shopping Express

250

The price is dropped tonight.
I have been asking RTX3080 from store to store in VIC.(ple, centrecom, scorptec, msy, cplonline, pccg)
None of them has RTX3080 in stock.
Well, then I switched my mind to hunting some entry-level 3090.
I suppose the cheapest 3090 (Galax, Inno) is better than Strix RTX3080 right?

BTW, I also cancelled my PLE evga 3080 third slot waiting list.

😳 Cost more than my PC.

    • +9

Actually, more than most PC of our human beings LOL

  • +1

The reviews seem to suggest very marginal improvements over the 3080. Although this might be easier to get given the extremely constrained supply.

    • About 3-5% in games

  • +17

How much for just the card itself and not the whole system?

    • 🤣

  • +3

Please excuse my ignorance, but is that suppose to be bargain?

    • +8

It's indeed 300-500 cheaper than most local stock you can find, and there are barely any actual differences between different brands. That said, don't get this just for gaming. The 3080 and AMD's offers are much more sensible. Get this if you really need that much VRAM to do stuff like 8K rendering or CUDA development. It's like Quadro / Tesla for people who don't need the extra features.

      • IIRC there is no local stock currently?

      • Speaking of vram, the rx 6800 has plenty of it. I might just wait for that to come back in stock

        • you'll most likely be waiting months, just like some of us for the RTX 3080s have been.. so wishing you luck to get whichever card you're after it's a real lottery.

        • Does not always work well if CUDA is necessary, or for machne learning related tasks where NVidia is the only usable choice.

          • @DmytroP: Because that's what gamers care about /s

      • 3090 is actually a good deal as a TITAN replacement, it was even more expensive.

        • Does not have titan drivers

          • @Casomme: Depending on the tasks of course, may be faster or slower comparing to the current titans. NVidia does support it for non gaming usages, for example the last release of cuDNN bring very significant improvements of 3090 performance for conv neural networks.

    • It's a bargain compared to other 3090s. Just not a bargain when compared to every other GPU

      • Still probably one of the cheapest ways to have 24GB of VRAM on the current geenration card. If you need it, it's a reasonably good deal.

        • I would love to know who needs 24gb Vram and no professional or titan drivers

          • +5

@Casomme: I do, playing with machine learning as a hobby. CUDA works well on 3090 with the "normal" drivers, NVidia releases their non gaming libraries for the card etc, so no much benefit of paying extra for titans or more expensive card. 3090 is faster for my tasks than RTX 6000 for example for less than half the price.

            • @DmytroP: Well you are a rare case

              • @Casomme: He is a beautiful and unique snowflake, just like everybody else.

              • +1

@Casomme: There are increasing numbers of researchers and hobbyists needing this for machine learning. Not so unique…

        • +1

Relative to the 20GB 3080ti, 4GB of extra VRAM costs $500-700.

          • @yoke2018: Very true, the only issue - 20GB 3080ti is not [yet] available. Otherwise it would be much better deal, especialy taking into account prices for 3090 in Australia.

            • @DmytroP: Haha yes, the hypothetical 3080ti. I truly hope it does come out. I just don’t see why it wouldn’t though.

    • +1

Just don’t get this card because it’s not a bargain in any meaningful way. It’s literally a premium card with a premium price in which the only people who would buy it are those who:
      - truly need it (pro/semi-pro esports players, developers, graphics people etc)
      - have a lot of money
      - have impulse control issues
      - have personal concerns where a high end PC will help with their situation
      - have financial management difficulties
      - don’t critically analyse benchmarks/reviews
      - punt on the 6900XT to be meaningfully inferior
      - fear missing out / opportunity loss / time loss / resource loss

It also doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to secure a 3090 if the 6900 XT hasn’t even been expansively benchmarked by reviewers to give any fair and real comparison to the 3090. Currently, it is significantly unknown about whether the 3090 is even a better performing card than the 6900 XT (until 12th Dec). Even the leaks (as reviewed by youtubers like Moore’s Law is Dead, Red Tech Gaming, Gamers Meld, Graphically Challenged, etc) remain vague / unconfirmed / unsubstantiated, and therefore unreliable in a truly scientific sense. Only through testing can data be generated to assist with clear and rational decision making (as endorsed by the likes of hardware unboxed, gamers nexus, 3D guru etc).

  • tks op bought 3

    • you did what?

      • drank too much tonight lol

        • I can help you by taking the extra at $1000 each

    • +1

      3 way SLI setup. Nice

      • +2

plan to use 1 and the other 2 for decorations

        • 🤣

      • +3

        Nah screw that.

Use one as a GPU, one as a CPU and the other as 24GB of DDR6 RAM.

Just add a case and PSU and you have a bargain beast PC.

        • +1

Or you can install crysis 3 on one of them

      • -1

Now get a Port Royale score of 35,000.

  • +2

Did you ever imagine, you'd be buying a 2K+ GPU?

    • +3

FYI, people have been doing that ever since the 2080 Ti came out 2 years ago.

    • +4

It goes well with their $2k+ phones..

    • +2

      no, and I never will

  • I could build two decent pc's for that!

    • -1

if you like 1080p medium setting gaming.. yeah.

      • +1

For ~$1300, you can do better than 1080p medium

  • Why not just get an RTX 3070 until there is stock for 3080? Unlike 3080 you can get 3070 now.

    • +1

because its bad value =/ 3070 is about 1k. for 1.2k you can… place an order for a 3080 and get it at the end of 2021 probably. sigh

      • +2

$ per FPS is still the best out of 3070/3080/5800/5800XT, if you talk about the value for money.

        • thats actually a very fair point.

        • +1

The RX6800XT seems like the best bang for buck at $1000 (and better performance than the 3070)

          • @MojoMiwo: Stock level is just as bad as 3080. It's a 3080 rival, not 3070.

6800 is the competing card for 3070, but performs much better. Main reason its priced higher than 3070 is because it's got double the ram.

            • @aveeno bb: 6800XT same price as 3070 and the reason 3070 is in stock is no one wants it.

              • @MojoMiwo: I dont know what you are talking about. 6800 XT in Aus is selling for $1,049, but no stock. You can get 3070 for around $949 with some retailers.

                • @aveeno bb: If you can wait a month or so for the 6800XT then its worth waiting. Why buy the 3070 when waiting a relatively short time to get something better.
                  Its called "Delayed gratification"

                  • @MojoMiwo: Because I will enjoy my 3070 while I wait for 6800 XT to be in stock.

With graphics card in high demand generally, any potential loss I will make from re-selling 3070 will be negligible.

          • @MojoMiwo: I was spruiking Ryzen 1st gen for a long time, genuinely happy for them, but I still didn't but one till third gen (although, I didn't buy any Intel CPUs during that time either).

Radeon has spent too long in the GPU wilderness for me to rush out and buy their first generation of "good cards" in what? A decade?

          • @MojoMiwo: Outperforms 3070 and outperformed by the 3080 in higher res gaming / RT.

      • That’s not true. There’s definitely stock around especially if you’re flexible on brand. You won’t get it immediately but people have been getting orders fulfilled after about a week or so for the 3080.

I’m waiting for a TUF OC and I placed an order on the 29/10 through BPC Tech and just got notified it’s about to ship. Multiple times they asked if I wanted to switch to a Gigabyte OC gaming card as they had stock come in for that. Just have to be patient or get in quick when random stock appears at stores.

        • Well, if you want one at $1200 range, there's only 1 shop and 1 brand, and thats PLE with EVGA. The queue for that is massive. Despite putting an order in on launch night, I had a card swap and got bumped to the back of the queue, that we can now see is moving very, very slowly. At this going rate, I calculate it'll be mid 2021 before I get one. I might as well get 40XX cards when that happens.

All the other brands and retailers are unbelievable, price gouging customers with insane prices. Who needs scalpers, when you have retailers/brands such as these.

          • @lawyerz: I was in the queue for XC3 Black with PLE, and just gave up and ordered 3070 (MSI Ventus 3X OC) from elsewhere for $929, because I was sick of waiting for 3080.

By the time most popular card orders from PLE are fulfilled, most likely competition from AMD and the new releases from Nvidia themselves will bring the price down a bit, making the wait from PLE a bit pointless.

            • @aveeno bb: I don't disagree. I'm very disappointed and disenfranchised with the very long wait as well.

But the good thing is that I can cancel anytime.

PLE does have 3070 and 3090 in stock from limited brands as well, but for $200 more, I do want the extra performance from the 3080.

I will consider the 6800xt as well, if/when it launches with stock but their reference launch yesterday was even worse than 3080, after claiming it won't be.

              • @lawyerz: Yeah I get your point. I think that's what most people think including myself.

I just thought waiting painfully to get a 3080 felt like a mental drain, and decided to just buy 3070 now, and possibly switch to a RX 6800 XT or 3080 TI.

          • @lawyerz: Yeah, true. I guess most cards are closer to the $1400 mark and then the majority of stores seem to be marking up $100-200 dollars on top of that. Pretty bad really

      • correct, 3070 benefit is supposed to be bargin 2080 Ti, but its not, its 1k instead of 800. You might get it cuz stock is avaiable, but man will you regret it when stock isn't an issue come 2021

        • I got one for $929, which is better than waiting until 2021 to reach $800. Time is money.

  • -1

    Bargain!?

  • +1

OMG. I can get a used car with that.

    • +2

Well, considering I bought one for $300 you can get a few

    • A used car has no vram though

      • +5

        No but it's got vroom

        • +2

haha not for $300.. more like.. poot poot. .pfahhhh … then silence.

    • Used cars are up 37%. Looking for a car atm and 5yo cars are selling for 8-10k under brand new ones atm… why?

      • Scalpers?

        • Even the car yards and private sales 😂

      • New car imports have been slowed because of covid so buyers are hitting the near-new second hand car market.

      • Several reasons, if people don't buy new cars (worried about losing job, cars unavailable), they don't sell their old ones.

The only stock on the market ends up being unmotivated sellers with greedy pricing

    • But can they run Crysis?

      • Pfft crysis. Try flight sim 2020.

  • Yikes!

  • +5

Should I sell my car for this ?

  • Less $200 and you can get a nice shiny Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max 512gb.

    • 🤣

  • Waiting for someone to say "my iPhone 12 Pro Max can do more and costs less" ;-)

  • -1

RX6900XT should be $1300-1600 and be similar performance to the 3090 apparently.

    • -2

RX 6800 XT already beating RTX 3090 in most games.

      • -1

        Only in 1080p.

    • -1

I agree. From what I’ve read and heard from reputable sources, it will be close and a lot cheaper. I’m guessing the real competition will be with the 3080 Ti because, as seen with the severe underperformance of the 6800XT in ray tracing versus the 3080 and 3090, this is AMD’s first gen in ray tracing. I think it’ll sell for $1600-1800.

  • I am using my 1080 with 144hz fhd monitor now, get no reason to upgrade.

    • +1

Yeah, you won't need 3090 until you upgrade to 4k/144hz monitor. For 1080p, anything this generation is an overkill.

      • Best card for 1080p is the 6800XT hands down. It still is overkill though. 1080ti is more than capable…

  • Noice. Guess i can sell my ps5.

  • +1

I was about to comment how expensive this is until I saw RGB and bought one!

  • +1

Rumor has it the 3080 Ti is coming out soon to compete with 6900XT and will have 3090 level performance but at $899-$999 instead of $1499. If you buy a 3090 and the 3080 Ti gets released soon after you were warned.
