I found it quite often to hear someone say "Ta!" years ago and its getting less and less. Is it just me or do you find the same? Are we losing our culture slowly? Does it have something to do with globalisation?

I’ve never used ‘Ta’ (parents are poms so wasn’t a thing in our family). But raising a toddler atm and it’s pretty common with my mum friends and childcare workers to teach kids ‘Ta’, I presume because it’s a lot easier than ‘thanks’. Many of these people are overseas born but use it. I rarely hear adults using it when not around kids though.
Strange. Almost every Pom I know uses it.
Oh, I thought it was an Aussie thing. I guess my parents were just not into it. Now that you mention it a think I have heard a Pom friend using it with her little girl.
Maybe it’s a regional thing in the UK? All my family use it, as do the majority of Poms I know……and the majority of those come form the same region!
I like the informality of the word, but it still shows good manners. Long may it continue!
@gasman70: I believe it's mainly in the North of England, because of the Danish influence centuries ago. (The Danish word is "tak".)

My family have always said Ta, but now that you've pointed it out, I've realised that nobody else I know does!
I've only ever heard very young kids and their parents use it, never adult to adult.

If you're implying that it's some sort of abbreviation, it's not. It's just a dialect word (from Danish, ''tak'').
I thought it was an acronym for "thanks alot". But it turns out alot isn't a real word lol

That's correct, the word is "tak" in Danish, which has evolved into the English word "ta". It's a perfectly cromulent English word, albeit more popular in some regions (Australia, North of England) than in others.

When I moved here more than a decade ago, I was really perplexed as to why people were constantly saying goodbye to me because I thought ta was short for ta-ta.

My Dad's family are English and they used to say it, but I never used it.
