thank, got 10. xmas gift done.

  • +2

Thanks bought 5. Anyone know a good deal on chargers?

    • literally posted a few minutes ago

  • +2

Worth noting that this phone won't be compatible with the much higher bandwidth mmWave 5G being rolled out across carriers next year. Seems kind of a rip-off when you're paying nearly $2k for a phone that will have an outdated 5G antenna less than a year after launch

    • Which phones will have the higher bandwidth mmWave 5G?

      • +1

I believe Samsung has had it from the S10 5G onwards on all their 5G phones, Pixel 5, LG V60 Thinq are some that come to mind.

    • +3

The spectrum hasn't even been allocated yet, so we're still a long way off mmWave. I'd say it will be late next year at the absolute earliest (with very limited rollout).

So not really an important factor to take into account for the vast majority of buyers at this stage.

Almost 3 PS5s or this? Decisions, decisions.

Slumming it aren't you? What about one for the yacht and holiday home?

      • not with that attitude.

      • +1

I may need 3 PS5 in my life as we used to get 2 PS3 ( one for jb ) , but Getting 3 cameras on a phone n pay double price is not smart act as all phones cameras are a joke and it's just like an show off act.

    • Damn, you only have 2 friends to play with?

  • +1

Seems like demand for the iPhone 12 Pro Max isn’t as high as Apple expected…I was silly enough to take a sneak peak on pre-order nite 1am (and thinking it would be sold out by the morning)…yet, there’s plenty of stock. Having said this, seems like buyers fancy the Pacific Blue colour…

Not sure how Apple AU can keep its orders from being cancelled (if those who ordered on launch at 1am are still waiting for their orders to be “processed”); whilst Costco Aust can sell them $70 cheaper and have it in stock…

    • +2

I think those days are gone. Apple's new phones used to be out of stock within few minutes, not anymore. Thanks to the price increase and less features.

    • I think the 12 pro is more popular this time round. It’s interesting to see over the years the selection of models shrunk to just a few and now it expanded to a lot more again.

  • Is this online only?

  • +1

Man I just went into optus to try.. This thing is a massive brick….

  • +5

Got mine this morning straight from Apple. Feels very premium and just doesn’t compare to the similar offerings of the competition. I guess only the ones who can afford aren’t salty on this comments section. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • +2

I'm sure not everyone who can't justify paying $2k for a phone don't have a few grand to spare, they'd just rather spend it on something else and are completely happy with similar offerings of the competition..

      • +4

That's wonderful - can you advise them to stop commenting on every Apple thread with the same tired cliches?

    • +6

      username doesn't check out.

    • +1

You must be very rich, I hope.

    • +5

I’m sure most people who buy it can’t afford it either, they just make bad financial decisions.

      • +1

I can afford it so I bought one. Everyone wastes their money on different things that could be called a "bad financial decision". Each to their own.

        • I agree , some people like to waste money on booze and cigarettes. Some like to waste it on luxury branded stuff .

If you can afford it then buy it.

For those who spend so much time complaining better off spending that energy doing something productive .

      • the amount of money i saved from these lockdown and working from home, the commute costs plus lunch plus coffee and other incidentals…. i could buy at least 2.5 of these.

so while you are sure most people can't afford them, it's foolish to assume most people are generally bad at financial decisions. because you wouldn't have figures to back them up.

people who are looking at these sort of phones just happen to have either 1) heaps of disposable income, or 2) able to leverage off instalment plans like a telco plan.

paying interest (or 'admin fees') on a 2k loan for a phone is silly and is a good sign that you are over stretching it.

    • +2

I guess only the ones who can afford aren’t salty on this comments section.

Yet I can afford to get 3 right now (yes with cash and not on credit card) and still can't bring myself to buy just 1 as that will just add fuel to the BS of paying more and getting less.

      • I made some good $ on offloading a few shares a two days ago, and then chose to put the money I made in some seriously undervalued shares that I was waiting to buy for a while (the prices had gone up but was still undervalued).

I am sure this will yield good returns in the next 2 to 3 years at most. Would I want to chip away a portion of that so I could buy some phone that will be outdated in 6 months and would be worth less than what I paid for, all the while I have a perfectly good phone that's 2 months old? Yeah, difficult choice to make. Haha.

I bet a sizeable fraction the people buying these phones are paying with their credit card or after pay or another form of credit.

  • +1

Apple tax is getting higher and higher every year.

    • +3

This year‘s iPhone Pro max is actually cheaper than last year’s.

      • Shh let them jerk in a circular motion.

      • -4

But the battery is -20% less lasting & no jobs are secure anymore. The opportunity cost is much higher considering the batter value for money options with free memorable holiday bonus from the difference ;)

      • They must have not sold enough 11 pro max, hence the slight drop?

        • I reckon they are too ashamed to charge more considering it is only a slight upgrade from the 11 Pro Max and the reason that they ditched the inclusion of the charger and the crappy EarPods.

      • It’s actually higher by $US50 in US for Pro Max 256GB model and that’s without charger. Australian currency is stronger than last year.

        • Ah, currency….

  • How about price beat at OW, and price match at JB?

    • +2

They don't price match/beat Costco as Costco has membership based access only.

      • -1

Well, i did it successfully. $1978, saving at least $30 on fuel.

    • Thank you letting me know.

I am not locked into the iPhone ecosystem and can use my iPad for iOS apps.

I am learning towards Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G for $1,299.35 from portal.

    This is an extra $650.

    Is it worth it?
What reasons are there to get the iPhone 12 Pro Max over the Note20 Ultra?

    Genuine question.

    Thanks

    • +2

      Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G for $1,299.35

Galaxy will be half the price in no time while you can still sell iPhone for almost similar price

      • What are typical iPhone resell values? 1
        Less 15% per year?

        • +3

I have sold mine for $100-$150 less than what I paid for them. I do however keep mine in neat condition and include box and accessories unused.

          • @Pricebeat: I better keep my boxes from now onwards!

      • -1

You live with inferior phone >1y & then sell it to buy another full price? You could buy the better Galaxy Note 20 ultra for less & have many years superior experience.
Where is the false economy coming from? System justification - If it's expensive must be good!???

        • +2

I don’t care about whether it’s inferior or not. I am comfortable with iPhone so that’s what I will buy. Just like I am comfortable with windows laptop and that’s what I will buy over a macbook.

        • +4

@Taki No, this has been discussed to death in previous posts. Putting the technical nitty gritty arguments aside, it's not just upfront cost but the life cycle of it - resale value (to upgrade), software updates (planned obsolescence), cost to maintain and serviceability. Time and effort are money for many people. If people have an issue, they can usually have it sorted out in an Apple store within an hour. The false economy is buying something base on the upfront cost.

          • -2

@Buy2Much: yep serviceability of the apple products. don't make me laugh.
right to repair should be a thing in any hardware ecosystem. apple tech is notoriously shady with tech assessments of hardware issues. they'll happily replace entire MoBos for the slightest drama and slug you 600-1000 bucks for the privilege.

          • @Buy2Much: Also privacy tradeoff (if that's something you care about).
Typing this on a Huawei p30, so I'm probably getting spied on by both sides lol.

I both care about the privacy aspect- (as a general negative trend) and know that I'm so weird and unimportant and poor that my data means nothing- simultaneously :P

          • @Buy2Much: Cant believe people are still dignifying him with a response. Lets the shrill be ignored.

    • +1

So that you can tell people you have a iPhone 12 Pro Max.

      • +1

So I can become targets for thieves ?

        • +2

          I'm coming for you.

I have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you, and your iPhone 12 Pro Max.

    • nope, not worth, i have both.
I would get the 12pro though, since i just like my personal phone to be a mac, and resell value is higher.

      • What would it’s resale value be in 2 years?

        • +1

The value is typically 60% of RRP within 1 year after launch (roughly when the new model is released) if in almost new condition with box and receipt. If you wanted a quick sale, then use 50% off RRP.

I can back this up, based on all my iPhones over the years being sold within 12-13mths of release date at around 50% - 55% of RRP.

iPhones are always in demand on the 2nd hand market and sell quickly. Note: if you purchase an iPhone 12 pro max thru Apple AU, Apple AU offers a trade-in of your iPhone 11 Pro Max for around $850. That gives you a great indication of iPhone values at a trade-in rate.

If you have the “right” tax setup, you should be able to upgrade your phone for no more than a couple of hundred bucks a year…it’s an instant asset write off. But please, everyone’s circumstances are different - so consult your tax accountant.

    • Next month announced Galaxy S21 ultra will have superior performance & features (available in Jan).
Then you can still get Note 20 ultra for even less unless you want to wait 10 months for Note 21… (the S-pen is essential for me).

    • Get the pixel if you are not considering it. It is so much superior in terms of support.

I have had no complains about google store when I had to rma my nexus phones. Support chat was friendly and helpful. No dramas. Everything handled online and via post. Had to rma 3 times because the refurb had same issue (during the notorious nexus ones) all postage covered by them.

Samsung? They don’t want to know me or fob me off to a store.

Nexus OS patches was supported for a while, unlike the Samsung ones which was just drip fed with hot fixes and the major version upgrade never come. I ended up rooting it to patch it. Fkn waste of time.

Now I’m considering a pixel xl next. Just that the discounts are getting a bit crazy with the cashback on jbhifi so am sitting tight.

      • wait did you just say Google support > Apple support? I doubt that .

        • No.
I said google support > Samsung.

Apple store support (Genius Bar) can be bad (personal experience) but if you walk to another store it’s good. So I don’t have enough interaction with them to say for sure. I do know when I return the MacBook pros and earpod pros, no dramas. They are good.

On an unrelated note, Microsoft store support is awesome, I easily had replaced my surface pros with them a few times.

    • For that difference you can buy a PS5 already

  • -6

At this price point, better to steal one in the store yikes

    • Sad life you have

    • Hey, good deal if you want free food and lodging thrown in…

      • Hey, good deal if you want free food and lodging thrown in…

Not entirely free, you might be expected to pick up soap bars for a living ;-)

Nice! I can afford the Iphone XS now.

    • +1

Picked up a 14 month old XS Max 256GB in pristine condition for $750 with 10 months of ACL warranty still available. Plenty deals on used iPhones now.

      • Nice, I gave my old 512GB XS Max to my 13 year old nephew.

        • +1

Careful now. Someone might report you to docs for child abuse. Everyone knows no less than iPhone 12 pro Max and macbook pro for children.

          /s

    • I suggest getting the SE instead as I suspect that would have a better battery life and OS support but I’m assuming much about your use case though. It’s an option.

I had the Xs and the battery life isn’t great. It’s almost like a old pixel 1… sorry it’s just anecdotal evidence.

  • -6

Nice marketing: Super Retina for Samsung AMOLED.
4x better drop performance for 25% tougher glass (is glass & brakes)
same scratch resistance as last year & back that is much more expensive to replace.
The camera module is serially locked & not allowed to be fixed by others.
    5x optical that is 2.5x actually…
For infinitely $pectacular po$$ibilitie$… with no charger or earphones
but you can pay more for 1/2 speed wireless charging with waisted heat
The 5G inferior module is missing mmWave & depleats the battery 20% faster than last year :(

    • Don't forget that it includes EPIC 5G!!!! That auto-turns (switches to 4g) off to conserve battery unless you're doing super duper unrealistic bandwidth tasks and that is only possible if you can actually get in to a 5G area.

    • +7

      Why so bitter mate?

    • +2

The camera module is serially locked & not allowed to be fixed by others.

Not just that. Even the screen and battery is locked. So after market repairers can't do squat.

So much for being environmentally friendly. When Apple stops producing a component you end up with a phone destined for ewaste when it shouldn't be yet.

      • I have been using smart phones for the last 14 years now and I have never needed to replace a camera or damaged one in any of my phones including Android phones in all this while. I havent seen it happening to any of my friends either Android or iOS so my anecdotal evidence suggests its very very small percentage of the population and a percentage of that small population will take their phones to the original manufacturer unless you are google and therefore dont have any physical stores!

Second the battery replacements are priced very reasonably and therefore I dont mind going to Apple for it (not that I have ever needed to do so yet) especially with the current crop of water resistent phones for which the water ingress may be effected if the job isnt done properly. Apple users, again, dont have a problem with that. Androids do and I cant fathom why. You are never going to buy one so why bother.

        • +3

have you seen how many of these third party phone repair shops around? Screen replacements, battery replacements, charging ports etc.

That alone shows there's a whole industry in repairs.

An industry being stifled by Apple not allowing iphones to be repaired by these non Apple authorised repair shop.

There was even a lawsuit in the US. The right to repair.

especially with the current crop of water resistent phones for which the water ingress may be effected if the job isnt done properly.

Doesn't mean it can't be done? And done right.
