RX 5700 XT, RTX 2070 Super or No?

Hey guys,

I currently have a MSI 1660 Ti Gaming X, paired with a 3700x and 144mhz 1080p gaming monitor.

I've been seeing quite a few deals for some lower priced graphics cards under $600 and thought to get some perspective before I take the plunge.

I'm weighing up between a 2070 Super, 5700XT, or just keeping my 1660Ti.
Keep in mind that my case will only fit a 270mm long card, so it will have to be a dual fan at most.

Do I want one of these bigger cards? Yes.
Do I need one of these bigger cards? I don't know.

If so, what are the main pros/cons between the 2070 & 5700?

Cheers.

I'd honestly wait for the 3060 if you can, should be similar performance to the 2080S for under $600.

Even if you don't go for the 3060, it'll push a lot of people with SFF cards to upgrade, so plenty of stock clearance and good second hand deals.

      under $600

      Must be dreaming

        So, don't wait then?

        • I think about $550-$575 for a 2070 super is worth it, so if a deal pops up around that price, you should get it. OTW if you're comfortable buying used, there are also sometimes good deals there

          • @ln28909: Building a new system here - awful time - 3060 is likely my ticket (ti likely too expensive for me) but I think at this stage have to expect might even be well into next year considering release and possible availability problems that I have to suspect will plague almost any new release ATM. So want to move on something now.

Appreciate the 'get a holder card' like a 1660 super argument, but by the time I've paid $320 for that may as well go $550 for a 2070s and live a little more… If can find a deal. After all I will sell second hand whatever I get once 3060 is gettable, and I don't mind a bit more likely loss on selling a 2070s in a few months or mid next year. And I may as well enjoy rtx and better performance now, especially with DLSS 2.0 with new games.

But the 2070s deals that seemed around a couple months ago appear to have really dried up. Does anyone have a theory on likelihood of getting a 2070s in mid $500s over coming few weeks? Will 3000 series movements make much difference to 2070s prices over next few weeks? Will black friday/cyber likely give some offerings? Interested in opinions of those in the know.

            • @Saortica: I honestly don't think there would be lots of deal on gpu during black Friday or boxing day as stocks are not as high as the demand atm, your best bet for a holder card is too buy a used card

              • @ln28909: Cheers, sounds like the best plan then. Slightly off topic but do you think there will be much in the way of ryzen 3600 deals when the sales ramp up? Trying to work out if there's any really good reason for me to hold off a few weeks to start getting my components. Been waiting a while for a decent GPU sale and wouldn't mind just getting on with ordering, but might kick myself if 3600s are about to plummet.

I don't mind if I miss out on $20 here and there, but would feel annoyed if parts dropped $60 or something.

                • @Saortica: I don't think you'll see a significant drop in 3600 either also due to stock, they have been running low before the new release of the 5000 series, and since 5000 series are still sold out worldwide, there seems to be no incentive for AMD to produce more of the 3600

      • For the 2 fan bottom tier cards like Zotac, it isn't unrealistic at all.

Bottom tier 3070's are $800 AUD (if you can get one…), and the 3060 has been leaked to be $200 USD lower than the 3070, so it should come in under $600 AUD even with the Australia tax. It'll be a few months before they'll be released and actually buyable, hence waiting a bit.

        • +1

that's $800 3070 is pretty much unobtainable, and MSRP are all $900+, so no reason to assume that you would be able to obtain a 3060 for under $600 anytime close to its launch date maybe mid of next year then yeah

          • @ln28909: That's basically my entire point; it is unobtainable, as will be the 3060 when it releases, but by early/mid next year stock will have stabilized and stuff will be available in shops again at reasonable prices.

If they're happy to wait 6 months, then they're going to get something 25% better for the same money.

            • @Jolakot: that's most likely a misconception, just like how people still think that 3070 is better than 2080 ti, they're too similar to call. No point in waiting 6 months to only achieve the current outcome

    Is the 1660ti getting slow?

Best to wait for 3060 and Big Navi equivalents.

    • It’s not slow, I just want to run ultra at 144 frames

  • perhaps I could cloud your judgement by throwing another option in your pool of selection .. AMD Radeon RX 6800.

    • +1

Just read that it will cost AU$950. A little out of my price range haha

      • +2

but if i can, perhaps put some sense into this :) you don't often upgrade by looking at your current GPU so you are like me (sort of) then why don't go top of the line then forget about it for the next (say) 8 years haha?

        • I agree.

        • This is the way still on my r9 390 going strong and saving money instead of having to upgrade every 1-2 years

What Motherboard RAM combo do you currently have??? How old is your 3700X??? How much production(multi core) work do you do???

The reason I ask is that, if you only really plan to game in 1080P and don't do a lot of mutli core work, upgrading to a Ryzen 5 5600X and selling your 3700X may prolong the life of your 1660Ti by increasing your FPS in most games to a suitable level. If you got $350-$380 for the 3700X and paid $469 for the 5600X, you would be out $89-$119 with the possibility of 20+% 1080P performance. This is presuming that the increase so far seen is reasonably scalable down the levels of GPU - which will be constrained by the GPU maxxing out rather than the current testing which is mostly using 3090's. There are no benchmarks with lower cards that I can see yet so it would be a bit of a gamble. If it pays off though and you do get 20% benefit, you might be able to wait out the current pricing issues with the new GPU's and, in 6 months, upgrade to a better card at a lower cost.

I also mention the RAM because current online testing is showing a further 6-12% increases in FPS @ 1080P by utilising 48GB sticks with the Ryzen 5xxx series CPUs. So if you already have 28GB 3200Mhz, and 4 RAM slots, you may be able to spend another $100+ to extend the life of the 1660Ti to a point whereby you are saving $300 on the card you want or be able to upgrade to a better card than you can get today.

Ahh the gutless anonymous neggers - come on heroes if you got something counter to say then put your name on it… otherwise go back to your playroom and get off mummies computer….

  • Wait till the mid range RDNA2 AMD cards are out or at-least known.

  • You don't need either of those cards for 1080p gaming.

    • What would you recommend?

      • Is there any reason why you want to upgrade? Isn't your 1660Ti doing fine on 1080p?

    • that's a pretty good deal for a 5700XT and its a decent improvement of around 25-40% ish on most games (https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti-vs-…)

its up to you to justify whether that improvement is worth $519 (less whatever you sell your 1660ti).

i think you are perfectly fine with the 1660ti.

  • I've seen a couple decent, $499 deals recently:
    1. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/585599
    2. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/580355

That first one with a free Razer Blackwidow V3 keyboard worth $239 RRP thrown in was a cracker; depending on what you sell the keyboard and your old card for that's almost upgrading for free…

I’d stick it out with your 1660ti which is still a very solid card for 1080p gaming save/wait for newer 3000/6000 cards or even the rumoured 3060/ti cards they might drop and look at also maybe upgrading your monitor as even a 3060 will likely be overkill for 1080p
