There are no pop up scares, but there are some scary moments where you have to run and hide, plus the monsters are kind of freaky. But the amount of scary bits in the game isn't too frequent. The way the story develops is outstanding and absolutely worth the thrill.

Soma and Amnesia are very different kind of horror games. Soma is barely a horror and it’s a great game.
