Ryzen 5000 Series, Which Will You Purchase?

Ryzen 5000 was released this morning of the 6/11/2020. Which are you looking to buy and why?

I have looked at a few online store fronts such as Mwave and PCCG but the CPU's are not available to purchase.

Are they all sold out or does AUS have a different release date?

Is this a repeat of the RTX 3000 launch?

I'm really excited to get a 5900x if possible.

Where is the 'none of the above' option?

    • +2

Perfectly valid response especially if you game at 1440p or 4k, or don't use cpu intensive task (which most people don't)

      • Yep, jumped on a 3900xt on prime day after seeing details of the launch. Gaming at 4k and even though I do make use of the 12 cores for other tasks, 20% performance increase to the 5900x wasn't worth what I anticipated would be 40-50% more cost based on prime day deal (on ebay).

  • Just bought mine - a few stores have them in stock.

  • They were released at 1 AM AEDT. The two higher end SKUs have sold out the initial shipment due next week but the lower end SKUs are still available at some stores.

  • Originally planned to get the 5600x but ended up copping the 5800x just now.

  • I got Rog Strix B550-E just checked ASUS site no firmware update yet for zen 3?
anyone got any new firmware for their board yet?

    • My Asus PRIME X570 Pro was updated late October ready for this launch.

      • Found it it under CPU column for some reason not under the Bios

        • Ah sounds like an EBCAK error…… ;)

    • Did the B550 motherboards not ship with Ryzen 5000 compatible firmware?

This will be my first AMD build, so I don't have an old CPU to drop into my Rog Strix B550-I to do the update. :(

Does Asus print the shipped firmware version somewhere on the box?

So is it time to upgrade my i5 4690 yet?

    • Wut? It was a fair question…

Also if I did upgrade is Windows 10 smart enough to figure it out or will it deactivate?

Edit: Also what motherboard (under say $400 and ram would you pair with one of these chips?)

      Cheers

      • That's what I upgraded from, but to a 3900xt.

If you sign in with a Microsoft account rather than a local account the upgrade process is easy. It will show as needeing activation, but signing in and letting it know which one of your devices you are using will make it take over the license with no issues.

        • OK I'll try that…if I decide to pull the trigger. Might wait till after Xmas and the prices cool off a bit.:)

  • The 5800x for me just because thats the sweet spot for me personally.

    • I'm contemplating returning my i5-10600k for this but im finding different results everywhere

      • Ugh i would hang on to 10600k unless you're desperate to move to a ryzen platform. the 10600k when overclocked is still an amazing gaming chip.

        • Not desperate but future-proofing and able to game at 1440p comfortably

          • +4

@clot10: Future proofing with CPUs is a fools game. Your 10600k is more than capable at the moment. If you have cash to burn, sure grab a 5900x, but i would suggest a 5600x or 5800x for you is more of a tiny bump for big price (new MB as well)

            • @Skramit: Awesome, thanks man! apprecaite it
Looks like ill be hanging onto the i5 for now
Last question, should I go to an i7 instead? Money isnt an issue, just want to build a bit better than mid range PC

              • @clot10: Have you already overclocked the 10600k?If not, get a good CPU cooler and overclock!

a 10700k is not worth the extra expense IMO. Not for gaming anyway over a 10600k.

Your only other real upgrade on Intel is to grab a 10900k second hand when they start popping up for sale, when enthusiasts have their 5900x or 5950x systems :)

                • @Skramit: I haven't started setting it up, was waiting on the 5 series to see if its worth getting one of the 5 series. I do have the x63 Kraken as a cooler though

              • @clot10: You say "money isn't an issue" so the straight-up answer is an emphatic YES, as pretty much the main reason would be money not upgrading.

          • @clot10: Also zen 3 is the last line of CPUs that will use the AM4 platform, so if you did get a 5800x and then wanted to upgrade in the future you would have to buy a new motherboard and ram again.

            • @BrodieA2000: Yeah that wouldn't be for another 2 years though before we see zen 4

    • I'm leaning towards a 5600x, what makes the 5800x better for you?

  • other than 5600XT all got $50 usd price bump

  • AMD with overall 20% performance increase, killed Intel

  • Already ordered 5900x at 1.02am, 2 mins after launch.

  • Anyone got tips on updating the mobo (or a spare ryzen cpu). I bought a b550 board assuming it would support these new chips out of the box.

Not keen on spending $30 for a shop to do the firmware upgrade.

    • A lot of the motherboards will have a hardware flash button that don't necessarily require any CPU/RAM installed. You can download the BIOS to a USB, plug it into a specific port on the back I/O hit the button and wait 5 minutes or so. A bit of googling on your specific board/manufacturer should let you know if you have this capability. I was able to do this with an MSI x570 Tomahawk.

  • I have ordered 5800x.

  • -3

they claim 20% but gaming benchmarks look pretty meh

    • okok i was actually just too lazy to dig through the reviews most of them are a waste of time, i only skimmed one and they look kinda even with intel. also i have no idea why most reviews are benchmarking the 5900x a 12core cpu when the ccx size is 8

anandtech ironically provide some good gaming benches for the 5800x(you have to try pretty hard to lose to these guys):

      https://www.anandtech.com/show/16214/amd-zen-3-ryzen-deep-di…

i'm too lazy to dig but i'm ready to believe when i see csgo results

  • 5600 non-X maybe

  • So all you folks buying the new release, where do you offload your old chip? Do you junk or sell, if you sell where at as I'd like to get some cheap-ish..

  • Pretty interesting to see for 1440p Gaming, even the Intel I5-10400F beats all the new Ryzen chips (and it's $229)
    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-5600x/17.html

No one seems to talk about that, it's all 1080p results where Zen 3 is clearly ahead.

It's still a great architecture but if you're just gaming then maybe consider options

    • +1

That, to me, is a very misleading graphic. According to it, the 10400F beats the 10500 as well as the 9900k.

The 10400F is then not even included in the individual game benchmarks lower on the page. In those individual benchmarks the 5600x beats all the Zen 2 chips as well as many current gen Intel chips and all last gen Intel chips comfortably. I would take the first graph with a grain of salt.

      Added in edit:
Basically there is minimal difference between all current gen cpus at 1440p so go with what you need outside gaming.

      • +1

        I am confused
I was basically saying there's no difference for gaming at 1440p with Zen 3, is that not true then?

I'm just using any points of reference/reviews I can, so far this is all the information I can see for 1440

The graph basically shows that it does not matter at all, and that 10400 is basically within 1 to 2 percent of 3600, 5600, basically anything recent.

Is there any further evidence to show Zen 3 has a significant boost at 1440p?

Genuine question, I'm struggling to find anything above 1080.

        • Nah I agree with yOU, just not the first graph in the link lol.

The first graph on that page is misleading. The individual benchmarks don't include 10400F at all, and the zen 3 chips are all higher in the pecking order in the individual games than the first graph. I think the first graph is basically trying to show that Zen 3 is a bad option at 1440, but the benchmarks for individual games show that any current gen CPU will be good for 1440p.

For someone not on a current or last gen CPU (like myself), the first graph implies that you shouldn't upgrade to Zen 3 and should choose something else. But that isn't backed up by any of the individual game benchmarks. My opinion, and takeaway from the individual benchmarks in your link, is that upgrading to Zen 3 from Zen 2 or any other current or last gen CPU is a bit pointless if gaming at 1440p. If upgrading from older CPUs then Zen 3 is a good option.

  • Hey guys, wondering which X570 I should go for with a R9 5900x. cheers! :)

  • This time around, it seems like the 5900x might be the better buy for me. Compared to the 5800x, you are paying an extra $160 (23% more) for an extra 50% cores. This is going off of mwave prices https://www.mwave.com.au/cpu-processors/amd-desktop-cpu?disp…

I definitely won't go out and buy it any time soon, will definitely wait to see how the prices go and to see if there will be an XT variant

  • I'm an software engineering student who does coding, gaming, 30+ chrome tabs, maybe some 3D design & modelling in the future.
    Should I go for a 5800X or 5900X?

    • +1

Check what 3D modelling software you want to use, then check on YouTube or elsewhere the render times from benchmarks of that software and ask yourself: can I live with that render time?
This is where the core count on 5900x can significantly improve results.

Chrome is really about your RAM size if you're making tabs like crazy.

Gaming, these chips are within a few % fps wise of each other and not worth the $ difference for the 5900x IMO and the % shrinks the higher resolution you go. This may change with future titles. But the 5800x has 8 cores the same as the new consoles so I suspect that the 4 extra cores in the 5900x won't be utilized very frequently on this basis.

    • TBH, as a fellow uni student, I've found you don't really need either. At least if your courses are similar to mine. If you wanna do some side projects on your own time then maybe beef up your system, otherwise I would say just focus on what you need for gaming. 5600X or 5800X if the price drops to be better value for money. Maybe even the rumoured 5600 non-X.

I'd say only go 5900X if you're gonna be using this for years after you graduate and forsee yourself using it for work.

  • Cost per thread table:

    • 5600X - $469 / 12 = $39.08
    • 5800X - $699 / 16 = $43.69
    • 5900X - $859 / 24 = $35.79 or $39.96 @ $959
    • 5950X - $1249 / 32 = $39.03 or $43.72 @ $1399
  • Has anyone received their 5900x yet?
I'm still waiting even though I ordered at launch time

  • In case anyone's after a 5950x, I grabbed one from Centre com Bundoora today, and they had another in stock (no 5900x though, as that's what I was originally after). Can't guarantee it will still be in stock and you'll have to drive there to collect it (they won't post it).

  • 5600X as I only want it for gaming. The money saved goes into a RX 6800 XT.

If you have money to burn obviously you should get a 5900X/5950X.

    • Can’t find any 5600x’s at the moment.

      • Yeah. Black Friday last week probably did a lot of damage to the stock level. Everywhere is out of stock and in back order.

Found one on SaveOnIt $489 "*** Due to limited supply, this item is for sale with AMD B450/B550 or X570 motherboard only. Orders placed without qualifying motherboard may be backordered instead. ***" Their MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk at $338.77 is quite reasonable.
