Anthony Van Dyck Euthanised after Breaking down during Melbourne Cup

One of the race favorites euthanised after breaking down during the race.

Anthony Van Dyck was ridden by star jockey Hugh Bowman, who on the eve of the race dismissed concerns about the massive weight the horse was carrying in the Cup.

I know it's over for another year, but say nup to the cup!

I think you'll find that a lot of people don't eat meat on that basis.

    • The Animals are breed for consumption. And their care is getting better (RSPCA Assured, etc).
They are not made to be ran around a track via a whip then killed when they can't run so people can put some $ on it, and perhaps get a gambling addiction.

How can people be so cruel?
continues eating a plate of beef and horse
But it is really is a barbaric sport.

    • continues eating a plate of beef and horse

Eating is for survival, even though no one eats horse anymore.

Now we just use them to place $ bets on.

Def's nup to the cup and all animal cruelty that humans participate in. It's not sporting to have a horse euthanised at this shabby 'event' and it is now a regular occurrence.
I live in Tweed and there is a new greyhound racing track being proposed, called a 'centre of excellence'. What a disgrace! It will no doubt be approved by Tweed Shire Council. Shame on them supporting animal cruelty.

    • Do you know anything about greyhounds, greyhound breeding, training or racing?? Get educated first, then pass judgement

I'm not into horse racing at all, but if the horse is treated humanely while alive and humanely killed if it suffers an injury that it can't recover from I don't see the problem… as long as the rate of injuries isn't indicative of widespread abuse or mistreatment.

Everything dies eventually and these horses get a much better deal than 99.9% of wild animals (and even many people). Google "warthog eaten alive" if you want to see the stark reality of nature. I imagine a wild horse, or any other herbivore that breaks its leg, isn't peacefully passing to the other side. Damn nature… you scary.

If a horse dies each Melbourne cup, what might that indicate?

    • It seems weird you don't know the difference between nature and conditions set up by man.

If we set up the conditions then we Must be judged on its morality.

        Fairly presumptuous of you.

Of course I know the difference. I just don't see what the big deal is - we slaughter literally millions of animals a week that have a much worse life and death than these horses.

Ahh all these white knights with their annual animal cruelty proclamation! And yet people buy puppies from puppy farms, eat meat and weather animal products. Back in ya box, stop trying to get on a bandwagon you sheep… where were you protesting horse racing at Nagambie on a Thursday arvo?!

Armchair activism is easier, and you can snack while doing it.

  • Existence as a racehorse or non-existence? They wouldn't breed them if there was no racing. Is it better to live with varying degrees of suffering or not exist at all?

    • Let's ask the horses. Do you enjoy being dog food, Mr Horse?
      Neigh.
